Ok, I get confused about this everytime I start reading about a new recruit. For 08 we have Liggins, Miller, and Galloway committed already and I assume they will take the scholarships of Bradley, Crawford, and Legion.
That gets us back to even in my way of thinking. From what I read we are interested in multiple players and probably a few more I don't know about. Examples include:
Pattillo 08
Harrelson 08
Majok 08
McCoy 08
Sutton 08
Assuming nobody gets creative and there are no transfers, nobody on academic scholarship, and nobody pays their own way - how many of these guys could we sign? How many scholarships are open?
Having answered that, lets assume we get a bit creative about scholarships, how many players beyond Liggins, Miller, and Galloway do you think we will end up signing? How many additional scholarships could we free up?
Leading up to the first day of the signing period, what are the final predictions for fresh faces signed and in UK blue for 08?

The breakdown is like this:
Teams have 13 scholarships. Ours are accounted for as follows:
Mike Williams, AJ Stewart, Patrick Patterson, Jodie Meeks, Derrick Jasper, Perry Stevenson, Michael Porter, Ramon Harris, Jared Carter
That's 9. Liggins, Galloway, and Miller have committed. Assuming they go on scholarship and Mark Coury is a walk-on forevermore, that's 12 filled scholarships.
So, uncreatively, we have 1 open spot.
Here's my belief on the many "creative" methods being suggested:
Transfers- Not going to happen, as they would've happened already.
Academic- Has never happened for a player who enters and normally would have an athletic scholarship. Not sure why people keep referencing this, there's a reason it's never done at any elite schools.
Redshirts- Redshirts still apply to the scholarship limit

I'm wrong about my memory more than I am right, but it seems like Derek Anderson gave up his scholarship and was either paying his own way or was on some other type of scholarship besides an athletic scholarship.

With the one scholly UK holds I would also be interested in how some think BCG could fit another player or two into this recruiting class. Obviously, he might convince someone to walk on but that seems unlikely. I thought I heard schools could split scholarships but I have never heard of someone doing that at an elite school.
Some of you wiser recruiting experts need to help educate us that are less knowledgeable.

Major D-1 Programs do not split schollies, WKU had this problem when they were moving up in football.
I believe the Carter will go on an academic, and possibly Porter as well. So that would open up 2, I dont know of anyone else who would do that

Derek was a transfer who had to sit out a year and then could play two. He was on athletic scholarship for the first and third year. He was not on scholarship for the second year at UK.
Yes, sometimes a player on athletic scholarship will give up to scholarship. It's very fair and talked about a lot more than actually done. Deron Feldhaus (sp?) offered to give up his scholarship one year for example.
I'm not aware that any player on athletic scholarship has ever gone on academic scholarship at UK.

If either goes on academic scholarship, I believe, it will be the first time it has ever happened.
While the rules do allow such a more, it's very restricted. Basically they would have to qualify just like any other student with no preference due to being an athlete. You can bet that if UK made such a move the NCCC would take a very critical look at the situation.

but assuming so, that wouldnt affect their eligibility to play ball at UK would it? i mean if they have the grades and CAN take the academic scholly, theres not much anyone outside of the university can do about it is there?

As folks are saying, past UK players have offered to pay their own way to make room for another player. I also know one player went on financial aid, freeing up a scholly one year (and I'm intentionally not sharing his name, as I think folks' privacy should be respected, although it had been public knowledge at the time). FWIW, I know I read in the past that non-scholarship players could not be provided team meals with the players, etc.

Absolutely right, poodoo....Deron Feldhaus being the most recent example
I can remember. Ravi Moss was on academic scholly and a walk-on.
I just don't see Carter giving up his scholarship, nor Porter.
Academics...don't know. I still have real mixed feelings when it comes to
that idea. Something about it just doesn't sit right (with me).
It could all be an irrelevant conversation, though. With Perry Stevenson
continuing to develop and the idea that AJ Stewart will be in his second
season under Gillispie, the front line doesn't look bad. And I do have concerns about the next year when we will have no seniors graduating
(unless Carter does NOT redshirt). THAT'S the year we probably will
have to look at some real creativity.
