RETURNING PLAYERS MAKE IT UNUSUALLY DEEP AND TALENTED
By Chip Cosby
CCOSBY@HERALD-LEADER.COM (CCOSBY@HERALD-LEADER.COM)
The struggles of the Kentucky wide receivers during spring practice have been well documented.
Part of those struggles can be attributed to the Wildcats losing a lot of talent from the position, and the steep learning curve for the young replacements.
But another factor can't be overlooked: The Wildcats receivers are probably having to work harder than they have in past years to get open.
The secondary has historically been a sore spot for Kentucky. But if things hold firm in the fall, this could be UK's deepest and most talented defensive backfield in quite some time.

Our QB and WRs may find themselves more wide open against just about any set of DBs we play against this year. Thanks.
The d-backs are the strength of the team, but the kicking game and the linebackers aren't far behind. I would say the D-line is also improved, but the uncertainty about depth (i.e. Ricky Lumpkin's hip), makes me cautious. This years D with last years O would really be formidable. However, I am hopeful for the Offense. When Brooks says we have an improved O-line, you can bank on it. With 4 good running backs, I am even more optimistic. I look for 10 wins in 2008 + the bowl game victory. Leadership from QB this summer is critical for the young receiving corp.

Diz2, I like your enthusiasm. Any UK fan would love to see 10 wins in a season. But, UK plays in the SEC, the toughest conference in college football. I also hope the kicking game will be a strength, this season, because it was average last season.

UK's secondary should certainly be a strength. Too, I like the thought of our secondary and linebackers' being improved to the extent that the defensive line can better rush the passer. Coach Brooks said Monday night that we SHOULD be better against the pass this season.
The terms 'excellent job' and 'excellent coverage' were voiced profusely by Coaches Brown and Thurmond during today's (Wednesday's) practice.

Cosby didn't even mention Shomari Moore, who played as well as any DB on the team last season.

While I wouldn't go that far, especailly thinking of Trevard Lindley, I would say that it seems to be a glaring omission. Shomari played quite well as a defensive back last season.
Perhaps Shomari has not been shining so much in spring practice. I know that both Lindley and David Jones have been doing just that, by the way. Also, Paul Warford shined in the Music City Bowl.
P.S. ACTUALLY, Jeff Drummond just shared that Shomari Moore has looked "pretty good" in the spring, adding that he has made some really good plays.

Kicking game? A strength?
Hope you're seeing something that was not evident last year.

Last spring the kicking game looked like... well... turd-like.
This spring the punts all were average to great - way better than turds. The kickoffs leaved some to be desired. Easy FGs and EPs were easy, they were tough last year.

Both Secondary units looked like they were SEC ready.

Yes they did. Even Matt Lentz got a pick!
