Gamecock QBs have 'a ways to go'

Chris Smelley and Tommy Beecher, the players battling for the starting spot, combined to throw eight interceptions.

"That's really not good," Beecher said, "but it's just one scrimmage."
Smelley threw five of them, all in the first half. Four came in the first quarter.

"I was thinking that I hadn't had five interceptions all spring practice," said Smelley, who started six games last year and won four. "It's definitely not a showing of what kind of spring I've had or what kind of quarterback I am."

I'll bet some assistant equipment manager is washing the grass stains out of the ol' visor this morning.

Not to be a party pooper, but I think this says more about the SC defense than anything. They may be the best in the SEC East next year, if it's not us or Tennessee.
Smelley was not too bad a QB in 2007.

Somehow over the past few years the SC defense has become their strength. Weird how the old ball coach just can't seem to get his offense were everyone expects or expected it to be. I love it, man I want to beat the gamecocks this fall about as much as any other team.

Actually, I have thought the same, bellbrass. Too, because I didn't want to be a "party pooper," I had not shared that here or in the Sunday chat. I BADLY want to beat SC this year. Their DEFENSE is what concerns me.

I agree, poodoo. Spurrier's best players have been on defense for three years running. We lost that game last year because of the Gamecock's D, not the classic Spurrier scoring drives we saw at Florida.
I want to beat SC next year ALMOST as bad as Tennessee. :)
