Although this is prompted by the "Jasper to leave" thread in the main forum, please don't take it as me wanting him to leave. I hope he stays.

Players who want to transfer routinely request a release. Schools almost always grant the release.

What happens if the school doesn't grant the release? I thought that the player could not receive financial aid at his new school for a year unless released but can't find anything in the NCAA reg about a release from scholarship. (This is different that a release from a letter of intent.)

Assuming there is some "penalty", I would favor the university not release a player after some previously specified date. For example say UK has a policy of not releasing a player who request one after May 1st. That would at least give the school a couple of weeks to fill the scholarship before the end of the spring signing period.

Of course a player could still transfer after the date but would be motivated to do so before. Guess the motivation depends on the "penalty", thus my question. What's the penalty for transferring without a release?

Dont think you need a release to tranfer if you have completed your first year that you commited to in your letter of intent. You just have to sit out a season unless the NCAA grants you some kind of hardship like they did for Tyler Smith at UT to be closer to his terminally ill father.

Actually, I think the rules go something like this:

If you transfer under extreme hardship:
a) a terminally ill family member
b) the school you were attending is put under probation and you were
cleared of all involvement
c) various other issues decided by the NCAA
under extreme hardship, you will be eligible immediately.

A normal transfer means that you must sit out one season of your sport
(this can be a redshirt season unless the redshirt has already been used
for other than medical....if one season is medical, I believe the 4year completion in 6 could apply.)

A transfer without permission requires the athlete to miss two full seasons
of his sport, and I believe only one could count as a redshirt year.
For example: If Derrick Jasper left Kentucky for UCLA without release,
he would sit out two full years and be eligible for one year of playing time
when he returned.

If Jasper wants to transfer....

Then the question that I have.....is WHY would Kentucky even think of NOT releasing Jasper???

I believe that his release would mean one more available scholarship to offer to another player. So if that's the case, then the thought of them NOT releasing him wouldn't make any sense what so ever.....

But if he doesn't request a release until after the spring signing period, there will be very very few quality players available. In that case the scholarship probably sits unused next year.

Yep, you're exactly right. And that's why I have been saying and suggesting that IF...he IS going to transfer, I'd rather him make that decision quickly (or A.S.A.P.).

I guess I was under the impression that you were asking that IF...Jasper wanted to transfer..and UK didn't want him to and therefore REFUSED to release him....how would that be handled.....

Bill, I believe the 2 year loss of eligibility pertains to a Freshman transferring during his Freshman year ( ex what Joe wanted to do).
I believe if after a year, if you transfer without permission, you cannot receive a scholly for a year, thus paying your own way the first year. It seems that Derrick Anderson had to pay his own way when He transfered here from Ohio St. I'm thinking that they didn't release him, but I'm probably wrong on that.
