I know I'm gonna catch hell for this... But I've been hearing about all of this powerful recruiting since last April... We need to see some names on dotted lines... I just read in another thread where we missed another target... Before the "Billy Clyde Defense Team" springs into action, this not a swipe at him... I just want to know when we will see some names on paper.....

We've got two top-35 players (Liggins and Miller) and one of the best JUCO players in the nation (Galloway 4-star) signed. Considering we only had 3 scholarships to give (until Leigon) left, I'd say BCG did very well, considering he brought in Patterson right off the bat.
If Harrellson, McCoy, Majok, Fleming and/or Sutton come aboard, that will round out the class. Majok and McCoy are Scout 4-star recruits, Fleming and Harrellsonn will probably be 4 or 3 star recruits and Sutton is a 3 star kid with lots of potential. If we land 2 more of the above, I expect you to come on here and "apologize"!!:icon_biggrin:

What target did we miss? Patillo? He was not a target. Of course, blugrassventure/marehavenfarms never missed an opportunity to slam BCG.

I don't think we missed on Patillo. There was never an offer as far as I know. He just accompanied Galloway on his visit.
And they're waiting on the two top targets -- Harrelson and Majok -- to take their other visits. Please keep up.

Bingo. We "missed" on Singleton. You could say we missed on Hopson. But that's about it.

Here's a few names you may have heard before....Darius Miller, Deandre Liggins, Kevin Galloway. Very nice class thus far. One requirement for names on the dotted line is scholarships to offer. Currently, to the best of my knowledge, we have only 1 to offer, and it is currently offered to Josh Harrellson, according to other things I've read. He's taking 1 last visit to St. Louis this weekend. After that, he's deciding. I think this is Coach's primary target. If he accepts and nothing else happens, this will be a great class. However, Jasper and Big Mike Williams are likely gone as well, but you can't offer their scholarships to someone else until it's official. Signing period lasts until May 22nd (I think), but we should know about Jasper and Williams around May 1st. I'm sure recruits like McCoy and others have been told to hold their decisions until the final word is out on Jasper and Williams. Be patient my friend.

Are you serious? The spring signing period has only been open for a week. Very rarely does a kid commit after taking only one visit. So, even if they only take 2 visits there has only been one weekend in the spring signing period to do that. Give it time!

That makes sense, I'm just getting excited.. I just don't want to have a bunch of losses next year... NC is nipping at our heals..

I don't have the wrong person. I know for a fact that you are bluegrassventures. I wouldn't expect you to admit it. I wouldn't admit to being him either if I were you.

Well said.
Here are my thoughts on what I think is going to happen. I think Kentucky adds three more players this spring to go along with Liggins, Miller and Galloway for the '08 class.
There's one available scholarship. I think that will go to Josh Harrellson. Would LOVE for it to go to Ater Majok, and it still COULD...but that's more of a longshot. Sounds like Majok could be UCONN bound (but fingers crossed it's UK bound).
Sounds like it's pretty much a done deal that Jasper will be leaving, and that will open up a scholarship that will go to Paul McCoy.
I think Williams ends up transferring, and that will open up another scholarship. In a perfect world...Majok takes the open scholarship, Harrellson takes Williams's scholarship, and McCoy takes Jasper's. That would make the incoming '08 class: Liggins, Miller, Galloway, Majok, McCoy and Harrellson. That would be the perfect world scenario to me.
But since I don't think this will end up in a perfect world scenario...I think the fall back plan will be Harrellson taking the available scholarship, McCoy taking Jasper's place, and Sutton taking Williams's. Still not a bad fall back plan, though....and would make the incoming '08 class Liggins, Miller, Galloway, McCoy, Harrellson and Sutton.
Flemings could still be in the picture as well...and perhaps Carter could go on academic and Flemings could be the 4th guy added to the existing 3 commitments (making the '08 class a total of 7). I'm just thinking that Coach Gillispie would like to add 2 big men, and truthfully (I think) NEEDS to add 2 big men...and McCoy basically will replace Jasper. That would leave Flemings on the outside looking in....and since he's supposedly having trouble qualifying anyway......
You cant get every 4 and 5 star recruit in the country. I think coach is doing a pretty good job so far with liggins, miller, and galloway and working on getting majok, mcoy, harrelson, or sutton. If we get any of those 4 really it would round out a pretty good class.
(shouldn't this thread be in the recruiting section any ways?)

I'll say this at the risk of joining in on the hell-catching. If....IF...we miss out on the current crop of Harrelson/Majok/McCoy/Sutton and come away empty, I'll join bluegrassventures in whatever ventures he wants to go on.
I don't see that happening, mind you, just saying.
'Tis still early in the Gillispie era. Inroads are being made. Reputations are being formed. In less than four years, the top-20ers will be lining up for the opportunity to play for the G-man. (Prediction.) (But fact.)

I just try to see both of an issue... That keeps us from walking through life blind.... I just got the impression last spring that all the top guys would be lining up to sign on with us, after Billy got his feet wet here... He stays busy recruiting, so it's bound to pay off.... :shrug1:

BLUE_N_WHITE--- You are spot on with this except for 1 thing. Carter on Academic Schollie is not a possibility. He would have to qualify and beat all other non-athlete students for the schollie. He would not be able to do this. What he could do however is that he could become a walk-on. This too is unlikely. Although, with all of the money his dad made selling tickets he did not have, this should not be a problem, right?
I believe the realistic situation is McCoy, Harrellson and Sutton. Anything else would be a bonus.

I will say that I hope we at least add Harrelson to our frontcourt (although I'm also holding on to the hope of getting Majok). I do think we need to add a quality player there, one who can step in and help immediately. The need (and playing time) exist. I'm an optimist and think it WILL happen, :) but I admit that I'l feel better when it actually happens, if that makes sense. I likewise THINK we will sign McCoy, but I'll still feel better when that actually happens, too.
No one outworks Coach, which is all we can ask. YET, there are no guarantees when it comes to recruiting young people. We must all simply wait patiently for Coach to get those signatures on the dotted line. It seems that we have two glaring needs, at least one quality frontcourt presence and, likely, a quality point guard who can, preferably, also score.
Again, I THINK both spots will be satisfactorily filled. Regardless, yes, reality is that they have not YET been filled. By the way, I do not fault Coach G if he has some more misses, because he cannot FORCE guys to choose to become Cats (and we fans sometimes have unrealistically high expectations of our getting everyone on our wish list). Most of all, again, let's patiently wait for some GOOD things to happen. :) GO CATS! GO COACH G!

Let's put the personal/other board stuff aside, it doesn't belong here. Send a PM if you have to.
It'll be frustrating if we miss some of our big men targets because we missed so many in the fall. Gillispie will get them in time. It's not who you miss, it's who you get.

A couple of weeks ago, I did some research and made a post about the hit rates of major programs.
There are two types of recruiting strategies: 1)broad net casting; 2) intense targeting. Coach K and Tom Izzo are examples of the later. They pick fewer than 10 guys, and target them intensley. Izzo's hit rate is about 40% and about 60% for Coach K.
Most top coaches are wide net casters, usually offering 15-20 4* and 5* players in any one class. The hit rate is about 1 out of 5.
At a time when we follow every offered recruit with such zeal and passion, we can expect to be dissapointed 80% of the time. This is not just a BCG thing, it is true with Calipari, Self, Pitino, Pearl, all of them.

Good post.
I don't think Hopson was a big priority, and I'm not alone in thinking that. Would the staff have taken him? Of course. Were they after him hard? Nope.
Singleton is the only player they've really missed on. But, you know, Chris Singleton was in the Derby game the other night. I'm sure he's a good player, but I heard his name called one time all night long.

Gillispie has barely been here a year. Most of the top '08 kids and a lot of '09s had already chosen their schools by the time he got here. I find it hard to fault BCG at this stage when his ferocity on the recruiting trail and players we get really won't be felt for another 2-3 years. For the short time he's been here, he's been hitting the trail HARD, trying to get some quality guys to make us competitive now. I'll lay off of the bashing. You definitely can't fault his effort. He just came in the game late. If late in the game means getting guys like Liggins, Miller and Patrick Patterson, then I'm thoroughly impressed.

Exactly, Blue Heaven. Any bashing of Coach Gillispie and his recruiting is ridiculous.
Too, I don't think that he is only hitting the trail "hard," but also that NO coach is hitting it harder. If I were a betting woman, I would bet on that.
As I've preciously said, THAT EFFORTis all we fans can fairly ask of him. Coach cannot FORCE these guys to become Cats. NO coach is going to get every player off our wish list. Yes, let's just give Coach more time and see what happens. I think most of us will end up being most pleased. :)

This post is just another example of unreal expectations. We are on the rise. Its easy to see. We are in desperate need of a big man to help Patterson but overall I think coach G is doing very well.
