— The point guard Bobby Maze is a JUCO who had committed to Maryland and was supposed to be a Terp next year. Current reports however are that the Terps backed out of the commitment and now he is back on the market….with Kentucky interested. He visits St Johns this weekend, but no word if he will come to Lexington. From all that I hear, the Cats really want Paul McCoy….but this could end up a backup option instead.

I having problems keeping up with everything, this confuses me even further..:shrug1:

I think Gilllispie likes to put interest in as many players as possible. It's a good thing too. After all, no harm done. Except for the awkward, "well, we're not going to offer you a scholarship after all" talk, but that's just part of the game.

Iverson-Clone Emerges
Bobby Maze
By Jeff Goodman National Recruiting Analyst Date: Jan 5, 2006
When you first take a look at Bobby Maze, it's only natural to do a double-take. The Patterson School (N.C.) 6-2 guard has an uncanny resemblance to one NBA star.
You don’t even have to bother asking Bobby Maze who his favorite player is. All you have to do is look at him.
``Everyone’s been saying I look just like Allen Iverson,” said the 6-foot-2, 180-pound Patterson School (N.C.) guard. “We’re going to do a commercial together.”
Maze is joking about the commercial, but his game has been anything but humorous lately.
The haircut, headband and sleeve on his arm aren’t the only thing that Maze and Iverson have had in common lately. Maze, who averaged 26 points per game last season as a senior at Suitland High (Md.), has shown that he can get by defenders virtually at will and get to the basket.
``I haven’t seen anyone else in prep school with his quickness with the ball,” Patterson coach Chris Chaney said. “He’s improved so much since he got here. He’s scoring when he should – and passing the ball when he should.”
``He’s got great work ethic,” added Chaney. “He’s always in the gym.”
Maze is a guy who didn’t receive much attention on the national level because he didn’t play AAU ball until this past summer as an understudy to Kevin Durant and Tywon Lawson with the D.C. Blue Devils.
``I’m a late bloomer,” Maze said. ``Coach Rob Jackson gave me an opportunity with the Blue Devils and Kevin and Tywon have a lot of attention focused on them. A couple of people noticed me in Vegas, but I didn’t really get a chance to show all I could do.”
``Scoring’s never been the problem for me,” he added. “People always knew I could get to the basket, but Coach (Chris) Chaney has given me the opportunity to play the point and I’m feeling comfortable now.”
Maze said that the rumor a few months ago that he had committed to Delaware wasn’t accurate – and that now he is trying to figure out a new list that is headed by Virginia Tech and also includes Utah, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Illinois and Auburn.
``I know a lot about Virginia Tech and I like the ACC,” Maz said. “They lose two senior guards. I think that might be a good situation for me, but it all depends. I am not ready to make a decision just yet.”
``I just want to go somewhere I can play right away,” Maze added. “I like to play hard and win.”

My question would be why Maryland backed out of the commitment. :shrug1:

I just seen an article on hoops report where the filthy Vols had just offered this guy. I believe that BCG is after this guy hard now that McCoy is off the radar.

Possibly. OR...maybe Jasper's scholarship won't be replaced in this class. Because unless I'm mistaken...Carter is the only senior, and therefore the only scholarship available to offer to potential '09 recruits. And if Vilarino is still committed for '09, then there are none available. And with Jon Hood, Derrick Favors, Clarence Trent, etc. all undecided for '09....I'd rather see one of them occupy that scholarship than Maze.

Maybe Coach is looking at Galloway, Liggins and Porter running the point this year.

Here's hoping that Liggins qualifies...BIG TIME!!!

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't Maze a 2008 prospect...not 2009?

Yes, he is an 08 prospect. However, if you do not use the scholarship this year, you can save it until next year, which would give us 2 open scholarships next year instead of one.

Maze sounds better than Mcoy anyway. I have nothing to say about recruiting anymore this year lol BG is too fast for me and I will let him do his thing and hope for the best. In my head I gave BG 3 years to do something anyways. Cant expect someone to come in and start a final 4 drive rite off the bat, sounds good but in reality he needs time like all the other greats.

It's happened before. At any rate, it appears that '08 recruiting is over and the team is set.

that's awfully strange, since the Vols have no schollies to offer.

Capel canned him at OU and Maryland pulled their offer. Something's rotten in Denmark.

I read somewhere I think Matt may have posted a link but anyways it said that Maryland gave his scholly to Tyreke Evans maybe? I cant remember the name but that was the story they didn't have a scholly to give him because they gave it to a better PG.

Strange tale. (By the way, Evans is going to Memphis now).

Exactly. Which is why right now, my main hope and what I hope the team's top priority is.....is DeAndre Liggins qualifying. Liggins qualifying, along with Galloway coming in and Porter returning would allow the Cats to save that scholarship for next year. And as I already pointed out, I believe Vilarino has been offered, accepted, and is committed to taking the currently one available scholarship for '09 (with Carter leaving). And with much better and more talented options like Hood, Favors, Trent, Orton, etc. undecided....I'd rather have that scholarship go to one of them than Maze....

It's happened before. At any rate, it appears that '08 recruiting is over and the team is set.

Yep, you may very well be right. And personally I'd be fine with that. All I'm hoping for now is Liggins qualifying....

I read it was Tyree Evans, a completely different person that still plans on going to Maryland.

IF Derrick transfers, Liggins does not qualify, and we do not sign another point guard, there's somebody else I haven't seen mentioned as a possible option at the point. If all three of those do happen and neither Galloway nor Porter does well at the point, Jodie Meeks COULD see action there. No, I don't want that, because we need Jodie concentrating on scoring. Yet, Jodie can handle the ball well, though, based on his freshman year experience at the point (which occasionally occurred). It's far from ideal, but it seems to me that it COULD happen.

Jodie actually done quite well at the point. I hope Liggins will be eligible, because he can really ball. On the other hand, what I have seen from Galloway, this young man is quick and strong. He sees the floor really well. PP will love this guy.

I've thought about that as well. Would hate to take Jodie out of his element as a natural 2 guard...because I do believe he serves a much more necessary role as a 2 rather than running the point...but in a pinch, Meeks would be an option at the point.

But here's hoping that Liggins qualifies and this is all a moot point..... :p

Jodie actually said before last year in an interview with someone that he
would have no problems trying the point.
For all I know, that could have been the plan last season...Jodie at the
point, Ramel at 2, Jasper and Crawford at small forward and Patterson
at power man.

Who knows? Kids have shown that anything can happen. If Jodie comes
back 100% healthy, he could very well be the point.

Here you go: Meeks at point, Galloway at guard, Harrelson at center,
Patterson at Power forward and Stephenson at small forward?

Sound crazy enough for everybody?
