One of the top junior college basketball players in the nation said he is seriously considering playing for the University of Hawai'i next season.
Roderick Flemings, a 6-foot-7, 215-pound guard/forward, said he has narrowed his choices to two schools — Hawai'i and Kentucky.
"Nobody really expected Hawai'i to be in there, but it's down to Hawai'i and Kentucky now," Flemings said. "I'll probably decide after I visit Kentucky."
Flemings made his recruiting visit to Hawai'i last weekend, and said he is scheduled to visit Kentucky this weekend.
Flemings averaged 20.7 points, 11.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.7 steals and 1.6 blocked shots per game last season as a sophomore at Weatherford (Texas) College. He was one of 10 players selected to the National Junior College Athletic Association's All-America first team.
Weatherford head coach Mark Osina, who has been at the Texas junior college since 1991, described Flemings as "the best player I've ever coached, by far."
"He can do it all," Osina said. "He can score it from anywhere, he rebounds, he can run, he can jump, he can defend. You name it."

Wow, I didn't think he could qualify. Apparently wrong!!!! This makes me VERY happy. Add Harrelson and Flemings, and possibly McCoy, and you have a dynamite class. Majok would be unbelievable.
There is only one fact about BCG's recruiting. It ain't over until the period is finished.

I was wondering what had happened to Flemings. The Cats could definitely use him. I just have to wonder whose spot he would take. It looks like if Jasper leaves McCoy will take his. And if Williams leaves...you've gotta think that spot will be replaced with a big man (Harrellson, Majok, Sutton, etc.). That leaves the one currently available scholarship....and what if Harrellson and Majok BOTH want to come to Kentucky? Do we think it's even possible to somehow add McCoy, Flemings, and two big men at this point?

how can UK compete with Hawaii?? Man, if your two choices were UK or Hawaii, Hawaii would be tough to pass up!

Well, I guess I would ask the same question, except: "if you're serious about Basketball, how could you pass up UK?" but then I'm a little biased :icon_mrgreen:

scholarships aren't an issue. Billy G and UK can and will get creative to make sure there is enough room. Do not worry about scholarships

It would be tough as it stands currently. but who knows---as crazzedcats said, there are "options"

Guess it depends on whether he wants exposure to the media, or exposure to the sun. Or whether he wants to soak up the sun, or soak up the Ws :icon_mrgreen:

I agree, if it's strictly a basketball issue than of course UK would be the choice. However, he is clearly interested in Hawaii despite that so it will be interesting to see where he chooses and why (if we were to find out).

No one in the mainland ever sees Hawaii's home games because they're at like 1:00 am, assuming they're on TV at all. That's not what most college players want. And every away game invloves a flight of 6-8 hours each way. How fun!
The beaches are nice, sure, but the BB ain't nothing to get excited about.

Good points.
Still wish the thread title was "Down to us or Alaska-Anchorage."
It just depends on the experience that you want. I have to think this is good for UK though. If he wants to get to the NBA UK is by far the better choice. We could sure use him. The next couple of weeks are going to be fascinating.

Of course if he chooses Hawaii, we'll have to hear it about "How do you lose a kid to Hawaii?" and, "I thought BCG was a great recruiter?" and crap like that. I remember when we were going after Dan Werner and his Dad says he chose Florida because he likes to wear sndals and shorts a lot plus all of those good looking girls in Florida. Some kids just make decisions these days for all the wrong reasons.

Refresh my memory...........where is Werner at now ?
LOL
just sayin, if you wanna pay ball in HOW - R -YA or at a premier basketball ( and academic ) school did we really lose anyone who had their priorities in the right place anyway ? I mean it took him extra time to prepare for college as it is maybe he really wouldn't bring anything to the court anyway ? :shrug1:

I hope it's beautiful next week, the weather hasn't been kind to us for recruiting visits.

wonder how the visit went? If it went well you would think he would commit pretty soon. If we don't hear anything pretty quickly I would think are chances go down.

Now that's just what I was thinking. If I am a serious basketball player, why go to the winningest program ever and play for a demanding coach who will push me to be my best, when I can loaf on the beach? :icon_rolleyes:

Exactly, KYISSUPREME. If Fleming were to choose Hawaii over Kentucky, I would say he would be an even worse fit than Hopson (based only on what I've read here) for a Gillispie-run basketball program.

And apparently....Flemings has aspirations of playing in "The Association" some day....and that's where the rigors of "Billy bootcamp", tutelage of Gillispie, and competition level (SEC and non-conference) of playing at Kentucky completely trumps playing in Hawaii......

This is the quote I like from the above article:
When asked what schools had expressed interest in Flemings, Osina said, “I can’t think of a school which hasn’t called. He likes Kentucky. I keep hearing that from the kids. Who wouldn’t?”
I love this time of year! Recruiting is so much fun.
