McCoy narrows to Kentucky and Virginia (http://ukbasketball.kentucky.com/mccoy-narrows-to-kentucky-and-virginia/)
Point guard prospect Paul McCoy has narrowed his college choices to Kentucky and Virginia, his high school coach said on Friday.
“He’s still in the middle of making his decision,” said Tony Broadous, McCoy’s coach at Grant High in Portland, Ore.
McCoy enjoyed his visits to UK and Virginia, Broadous said.
When asked what factors McCoy would weigh in making a decision, Broadous said, “I don’t know. I tried to get as much information from him as I could because I knew I’d get phone calls. He just said he liked the visits, had fun, played with the guys. He just didn’t know which one to choose.”
Earlier in the recruiting process, McCoy had been linked to Washington State, SMU and Southern Cal.

Finally some info from the quiet man. It's from Tipton, so take it fwiw. Let's hope he doesn't go all Ralph Sampson on us :icon_lol:

If we could get McCoy then all we would need is a Hatfield. :icon_lol:

Well, being from the state of Oregon there is obviously no ties to the University of Virginia. ( That I know of...correct me if I am wrong) So if his decision is based solely upon how it affects his career and education, Kentucky seems like an obvious choice. He is not going to compete for an ACC Title period at VA, and will scrap by for at large bids to the tourney at best. I will not even begin to list the intangibles and tangibles about UK, because we all know them.
I have no inside source, but over the years I have been almost spot on in guessing our signee's. (minus the last 4 years of Tubby's regime.. because well.. thats another story) I have the gut feeling that we sign McCoy. If not, then everyone can come back to this thread and call me an idiot.

UVA tied UNC for the ACC Championship 2 years ago. UVA just built a state-of-the-art arena (JP Jones Arena), I've been in it, while smaller than Rupp, it's light years ahead in facilities and luxuries. We need to close the door on McCoy and Harrellson. Majok is UConn's and I'm not too sure about the kid from Serbia. My faith wants to say there is a "Legion-type of situation" out there and we'll bring in a good one this summer. I'm getting very nervous.

UVA has great academics, a brand new beautiful (and quite large) stadium, and an attractive campus. I can see why a kid would want to go there.
But UK is UK.

One thing to bear in mind about UVA, Dave Laeito learned his recruiting techniques from one of the best, Calhoun at UConn - so you know what to expect. Also, UVA just lost Singletary, a stud who played PG for them.
We really need to get a good PG and a big man.

I WANT all these guys also but UK will be fine even if NONE of them sign. We have recruited 3 great players already, the roof will not cave in if we don't sign another player.

Drew, I kinda have the same mindset myself. Our signee's so far are great, and we should be very competitive. But with jasper transferring,( if it really happens) I just really feel that we need a point guard coming aboard. Perhaps not to start every game as a freshman, but to get into the mix and be ready for the next season.

Speaking of a good Point/combo guard.....
I'm not sure why....but for some reason Verdell Jones all but seems to have dropped out of the recruiting equation. I saw where Truzenzuzex on A Sea of Blue has Jones ranked #4 on his wish list, with McCoy ranked 6th. I like McCoy, but I'm not so sure I wouldn't agree (based off of what I have seen of both). I think he could easily be what Gerald Fitch was to the Cats....and possibly even better.

I watched some video footage of Jones via YouTube....including the game between Champaigne Central and Washington (entitled "Matt Roth vs Verdell Jones").....and was VERY impressed with what I saw of Jones. Everyone is looking for an outside shooter....and Jones IS that guy! He handles the ball really well, has great passing skills, and a silky smooth jumper with great range. Yeah, he looks like a Reggie Miller/Tayshaun Prince clone with that thin build...but his game appears to be pretty solid. I'm wondering if Kentucky isn't recruiting him as actively or as hard because he hasn't shown as much interest in UK....because what I've seen of him is fairly impressive.
Jones is one of the top unsigned guards remaining in the '08 class. He is currently getting interest from Kentucky (http://kentucky.scout.com/), Indiana (http://indiana.scout.com/), Georgetown (http://georgetown.scout.com/), Minnesota (http://minnesota.scout.com/), Virginia (http://virginia.scout.com/), Texas (http://texas.scout.com/) and Arizona (http://arizona.scout.com/).

Just bumping this thread back up to the top, in hopes that we hear something about McCoy soon! I really hope we get this kid, regardless of Jasper staying or leaving. It appears Jones is committing elsewhere, so lets keep our fingers crossed!

I'm confused, does he have an offer even?

I think the offer depends on Jasper.
Jasper leaves he has the offer. Jasper stays he doesn't.
I think McCoy is willing to wait...

Just like Captin Kirk Billy needs his McCoy. Jasper or not I think he would be a good get. I think Meeks and McCoy would be a heck of a back court. Then go big with Galloway and Liggins / Jasper.
Very athletic.

I think you just nailed it. ;)
Personally, I think he offers some ability and brings some thiings to the table that Jasper doesn't (outside shot, ability to penetrate, quickness). Whether or not he turns out to be an overall better player than Jasper is yet to be determined, though....but strictly from an offensive, "ability to score" standpoint, I think he would prove to be an upgrade over Derrick. Maybe not this upcoming season, but by his third year I think we'd feel better about his ability to score than we currently do about Derrick's (going into his third year) ability to score....
