Are any of The Nation planning a trip to Colorado or other western states this summer? I'm going to Yellowstone the third week of June.

I would really like to go to Yellowstone. How far is it from Louisville, KY by car??? I guess it would be better to fly out there and rent a car, maybe??
How many days does it take to be able to see everthing notable??
Some friends of mine made a reservation last year at a lodge there in the area; they said that was nice to be able to come and go at liesure, but was hard to get a reservation.

We went the year of 9/11. (the week before) and stayed at one of the lodges by Old Faithful. Left the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. Try and go. Well worth the time and effort. Excellent and beautiful place. Lots to do. Will go again.

We drove it once. I'd alllow 3 days each way coming & going if driving. There are other things along the way like Badlands, Custer State Park, Mt. Rushmore, & Deadwood in SD, nearby Devils Tower in WY. Also, plenty to see in CO on way back.

If you have more money than time, fly into & out of SLC or Billings. It's maybe 5-6 hrs N to Ystone from SLC & there's the Grand Tetons & Jackson Hole to see along the way/back. We took 4 days at Ystone, 2 at GT's & Jackson. Great galleries in Jackson. I'm sure another 1-2 wouldn't go to waste assuming you like to get out and hike/fish/wade streams/watch geysers/falls/wildlife/take river raft trips & not just ride by. If latter, 2-3 days total.

But the big thing with SLC is that you can go also 5 hr S &/or E and see all the great UT national parks. I don't know where to begin. Ask Terry L. Heck, that's another week easy. Net, two weeks once out there is not overkill at all. Our driving trip was 23 days.

I had wanted to take the family to Gunnison, Co. and go horseback riding and rafting. However we decided that our youngest may be ready for a week of riding.

So it is back to Destin.

Sam, we love the southwest Colorado area. Gunnison is sort of the gateway to some great destinations. Crested Butte, Teluride, Cortez and Mesa Verde. I don't ski so I love Colorado in the summer.

We can't make it there this year, maybe the next.

Donito's Canteena in Crested Butte has some of the best margs in Colorado...my sister got so lit her girlfriends had to undress her much to her brother's delight. Also, have you been to Ouray? I am going there in July.

Never been to Ouray. Man I want to get back to Colorado soon. Years ago me and my now wife camped up at Lake Irwin above Crested Butte. We met and partied with some great people up there. The day we left, to get back to a road we had to ford a stream in our honda civic and it had rained, well I got swamped in the middle of the stream. We were well mellowed by some local herb and it was a real trip. We then went into town to the shower house where I backed over the community garbage cans. (All in slow motion) We looked at each other and said _ _ _ _ it and drove down to Teluride.

LOL...Rocky Mountain High...must have been the altitude

Next time you are in Colorado let me know and I'll meet you in Ouray...it is such a neat town in a beautiful location

You always have a place to stay in Louisville, Colorado style.

I'll be in SoDak in July fishing and am hoping to drag the wife out to Dillon MT sometime this fall...for more fishing of course.

Won't get to Colorado, though, Terry. Too many damn hippies down there. :icon_mrgreen:

I'm back from six days on the road at Colorado National Monument and a day trip to Arches National Park... it was a high time with Mother Nature and red rock country. Colorado National Monument is a beautiful red rock/canyon area that is soooo overlooked and it could be a national park...the next time you travel west/east on I-70 exit at Grand Juction or Fruita, Colorado and vist this wonderland.

Terry - the next time you're in, remind me to recount the sad, sad tale of two fla****er Kentuckians and a dog, in an overloaded canoe, attempting to travel the Dolores River through that gorgeous red-rock canyon country. It really should be a case-study on what-not-to-do with an Old Town Penobscot canoe. lol

We camped out and I only remember bathing once.

We usually weren't sober though as they have liquor stores that would make Newport proud.

I just got back from my heaven, Yellowstone. It was a wonderful six days of hiking and wildlife viewing. Among the critters I saw were: two different griz moms with one cub each, mamma black bear and two cubs, pronghorn, badger, otter, wolves, coyotes, mule deer, bison and calves, cow and bull elk, pelicans, otter, and sandhill cranes. There is still a bunch of snow in parts of the park and potholes in the Canyon cabin area big enough to lose a small dog in. Sadly, a good many tourists still can't manage the concept of using pullouts to view animals instead of stopping in the middle of the road and causing huge traffic jams...easily, the humanoid is the most dangerous mammal in Yellowstone. :icon_rolleyes: If you can survive driving the roads the backcountry is a piece of cake.

I just returned from Glenwood Springs, Ouray and Gunnison: near Denver the prices are about $4 a gallon but once you go into the mountains the prices jump up as much as 38 cents/gallon

I read that on an internet news service. I'd like to see a before and after photo.

When I see such an arch it always enters my mind, when will it fall? You always think in geological time, like, it will be here for a few thousand more years. I wonder if it went in a slow, slow crumble or a big BOOM, CRASH, DOWN?

Kinda matches my chest.

I saw that too. We were to Arches about 3 yrs ago. Can't recall that particular one. The park must be down to about a 100(200?) arches now.

Need some more wind for new ones. Send oruacat2 out there quick.

I was in Yosemite 2 months before and then 3 years after that big rockslide happened up near Happy Isles/Upper Pines campground. It was a big deal - destructive, and even killed a nearby hiker while injuring a dozen others.

Arches is littered with "balancing" rocks and thin natural bridges that make you scratch your head and wonder "how the heck is that thing still standing?" lol

The neat think about Arches NP is that while some arches fall, others are being made...the last time I saw Wall Arch was four years ago and I can't wait to go back to see it's remains...when that came down I bet it made one heck of a noise

That is funny. At the fan day tailgate, I heard someone say:

"They are getting furniture disease; Their chest is falling into their drawers."
