I am going to Houston for the first time in a few weeks and I need a nice place for a customer dinner in the downtown area. Any suggestions?

I used to work for a company based out of Houston, and whenever we all traveled there for meetings, we always went to Maggiano's.

It is a chain, but much more upscale. You can also (depending on the size of your party, of course) get the party room, and they do have a family-style menu, which I didn't think I would enjoy so much, but really was interesting.

I've also been to the one in Denver, and it was very nice, too.

Here's their website:

It's also located in the Galleria area, so there are places you can go for pre- or post-dinner drinks, etc.

Hope this is of some help.

fwiw, Texas Monthly's restaurant picks for Houston:

I compared it to reviews for Austin just to see how it compared with what I would recommend here. I only recognized a few, but agreed with some they recommended. They left out some that I think should have been included.

Quick scan of Houston restaurants, Truluck's is the only one I recognize. Truluck's, at least here in Austin, isn't a bad choice...I can't say it was outstanding, but we had a nice meal there. Very busy, certainly make a reservation.

Not too far from Minute Maid park and catty corner to the Houston Chronicle is an awesome Texas style restaurant. Its in some kind of special shopping district that i cant remember the name of. Right next to the welcome to houston sign. Also, there is a Texas style roadhouse on I-10 out by Sugarland next to my favorite, George Bush park.
