Four years ago, getting to the 40-win plateau would likely have been enough for the Kentucky baseball team.
Not anymore.
The Wildcats (41-15, 16-14 Southeastern Conference) head into this week's SEC tournament in Hoover, Ala., eager to prove they finally belong with the conference elite. Despite rolling up a 41-15 record during the regular season, the fourth-seeded Wildcats face fifth-seeded Alabama (32-24, 16-14) knowing there's plenty at stake.
A couple of wins could put the Wildcats in position to host a regional in the opening weekend of the NCAA tournament. A couple of quick losses would take some of the shine off their sterling regular season and make the road to the College World Series as long as one of star outfielder Collin Cowgill's home runs.
It's a challenge coach John Cohen doesn't shy away from, mostly because he knows it wouldn't help.
"The kids, they check the Internet, they know what's at stake," Cohen said. "There's no point in not talking about it. We feel we have a great opportunity to help ourselves."
