Did anyone else see the Titans' preseason game against Tampa last night? I caught most of it.
First, I think Norm Chow's offense is going to work well in the NFL. The Titans really just have one experienced WR (Drew Bennett), so they're going to depend a lot on young guys, like the three they drafted (Brandon Jones, Courtney Roby from IU, and Roydell Williams). It's not gimmicky like Steve Spurrier's "Fun N Gun," and like Eddie George (last night's color analyst) said, it resembles what the Titans did under Les Steckel in 1999 when they went to the Super Bowl. It actually reminds me a little bit of Hal Mumme's offense, only the team system doesn't disregard a running game, defense, or common sense. I really wish Chow would have taken the UK job after the 2002 season. I hope UK isn't looking for a football coach next year, but if they are, I hope Chow is the first person Barnhart calls. After all, two of his biggest reasons for ultimately turning down the job last time were his desire to stay on the West Coast and that he didn't want to try to take a team through the last years of NCAA sanctions, both of which would no longer be concerns.
Second, Shane Boydgot in the game and got to return a couple of punts, but Fisher didn't give him a shot at QB. He had two decent returns, but the announcers commented that he hadn't looked very good fielding punts in practice.
Instead of Shane getting any reps at QB, Gino Guidugli (former UK commitment who changed his mind and went to Cincinnati) was last night's #3 QB. He barely got the Titans into FG range when Rod Bironas made a 53-yarder to send the game to OT, but overall, I didn't think Gino looked very good. He didn't look poised, his passes were all over the place, and there were one or two passes that should have been intercepted, but luckily for him, the defender dropped them. I hope Shane gets a chance at QB because that roster spot for the #3 QB is basically between Boyd and Guidugli, and I don't think Gino is unbeatable.
