View Full Version : Beer of choice?

Kind of following with capcat's thread about wine and spirits.
What beers do you prefer? For what applications (:icon_mrgreen:)?
Also, recommendations or questions would be great! Perhaps we have some beer experts on here :shrug1:

For me at this time:
My go-to all around beer to have with a good meal is Stone's Arrogant B. Just goes great with a good hearty meal such as a great steak or other beef.
If I'm eating pizza, it's Stone again for their IPA. Dogfishead 60 minute IPA is good too.
For a game-time or refreshing beer, I guess I grab a Coors Light most often.

Not a big drinker, but on vacations and occasionally around the grill in the backyard I enjoy Sam Adams. I like pretty much any concoction of theirs, except for the cherry wheat. The Light is my favorite, with Boston Lager and Black Lager close seconds. (Never had the cranberry, but I don't think I'd like it either.)
I bet I can count on four hands the number of beers I have per year. But trust me, I make them all count.:thumbup:
(About four of those in the year will be a Guinness.)

Samuel Smith, New Castle Brown Ale, any Samuel Adams variety, Red Stripe, Dos Equis, St Pauli Girl, Saporo, Asahi, and the list could go on for days! :icon_mrgreen: Really, just about any import is good with me. Other than Sam Adams, I'm just not much on our domestic beer.

Perhaps I should clarify a little. I don't mean "drink", I'm simply talking about having a beer or whatever. Perhaps you have a specific beer to go with a specific meal, or something to that effect.
I'm not talking about tying one on, lol.

My favorites have probably been those offered by Flying Dog Brewery (http://www.flyingdogales.com/beer-pack.asp).
Road Dog Porter, Tire Bite Golden Ale and In Heat Wheat Hefeweizen Ale are my favorites of their every day brews. The overall best is likely a specialty brew, Double Dog Double Ale, sporting an alcohol content of 11.5%/
I lean toward the porters and stouts, so I'd also have to add Rogue Shakespeare to the list.
I also like the Rogue Dead Guy Ale, a german style maibach beer.
Stone Brewing Co.'s Arrogant Bastard Ale is excellent, as well.

I used to think so. However, having had Blue Moon WITH the orange, I have to say I do like it. I'm less inclined to drink Blue Moon in the winter months, but when I have I omit the orange.
Tecate and Red Stripe are good, hot summer day beers that are complimented with a lime wedge.
Negro Modelo is a tasty, dark mexican beer that is fine with or without the lime.

While I like a Newcastle or Bass on occassion, I drink Coors Light most often, particularly because its produced in a non-union environment, and since I make aluminum can sheet for a living, always in a shiny, recyclable aluminum can.

I'm exactly the opposite. For whatever reason, I think of Blue Moon as more of a cold-weather beer. And I think the orange slice makes it. I can drink it without, but to me, it's just another beer that way.
Now, in the summertime, I'm all about beers from south of the boder - with lime. Red Stripe, Corona, Tecate and that one from El Salvador with the turtle on the bottle who's name is escaping me right now are all great.
I've been digging the new Jimmy Buffett-brand beer too. I know it's a Corona clone, but I actually prefer it without the lime. Last summer I drank quite a few Miller Chills, but now that the Bud Lite Lime is out, I like it a lot more - if I'm in the mood for that sort of thing. I don't really consider those beers as much as lime-flavored alcholic drinks.

Had a sampler pack from this brewery, and the 'Small Craft Warning Uber Pils' was PHENOMENAL.

Yup. Abbita Purple Haze at The Ship English Pup in Gatlinburg last winter.
Unfortunately, I didn't know a thing about the "Purple Haze"s flavor characteristics and ordered it in the middle of a meal.
Bad timing.
Purple Haze is best consumed on its own and not with food, for it has hints of jellybean/lichorice on the palate that just can't coexist with Shepherd's Pie. :icon_lol:

Liquor Barn in Hamburg (lexington) has several ways for people to try different beers. You can go to a walk in cooler and get individual beers for anywhere between $.50-$2.50 each. A growler is 64 ounces - half gallon, or, 1.9 liters.

Yup.
Liquor Barn AND Party Source also provide on-tap micro brewed beers as well. Buy a growler jug and get it refilled once a week or so. You can buy them there or at any beer making supply place. A growler holds half a gallon of beer.:beer:
I forgot all about the growler! The little guy behind the counter liked talking to my 2 year daughter and forgot to charge me for the growler. I filled it twice with Hefe Wiesen...wheat beer...mmm....

I hate Corona. If it's Mexican beer, it's Pacifico Clara for me. Wow.
My very favorite beer hands down is White Ale made by Sam Adams. It's only out in the spring quarter of the year. Whenever it's out, I always get about a case of it. It only lasts me less than a month but man it's good stuff.
Liquor Barn in Hamburg (lexington) has several ways for people to try different beers. You can go to a walk in cooler and get individual beers for anywhere between $.50-$2.50 each. Most of the time the beers are around $1.50 each. I go at least once a week and get a 6 pack of beer that I have never had before. It has really expanded my beer taste.
Yes, I frequent the Liqour Barn off Fern Valley Road in Louisville, quite often. :icon_mrgreen: It's a great place. I could just browse in there for hours. Love the humidor room, as well. Like you, I used to get an "experimental beer" every time I was there. But, I ran out of new beers to try.:icon_frown: As for the Corona, I agree that it is not as good as most other Mexican brews.
:icon_lol:
You know, I'm not much on the Purple Haze. I normally like hefeweizens, but just don't care for the Purple. But, I do like thier IPA. And I don't like many IPA's.

I love High Life for a workin' out in the yard or wood shop swillin' beer. Michelob was my favorite "premium" beer until I began sampling micro-brews 4 or 5 years ago. Now I rarely drink it, save for the occasional Amber Bock on tap if dining out and no other "darker" draught beer is available. But now it tastes almost flavorless in comparison.

gerntz,
Believe it or not when I was young I too enjoyed wiedemann beer. They sold it at the Kroger's in Lexington not far from where my sister lived. Back home I also enjoyed Schlitz which was widely sold in Perry Co. which back in the 1950's and 1960's was the only "wet" county in eastern Kentucky. The "bootleggers" in the dry counties sold it as well so I know they went to Perry Co. to buy it.
Now that we have a lot of "wet" counties and small cities in eastern Kentucky the variety of beer has increased and a person can be more discriminating about the taste of the beer that they buy. It is almost funny because all of the young people in eastern Kentucky who are thirty or younger don't remember Magoffin Co., Floyd Co. and the city of Pikeville anyway but "wet" but I have memories of having to get alcoholic beverages on the sly from a trip to Perry Co. on the old two lane road with its hills and curvy roads or to a bootlegger. Now we are like everybody else at least as far as sampling alcoholic beverages are concerned.

Yes it does. It is four lane now from Pikeville all the way to Ashland. Since Prestonsburg and Paintsville are so close to each other(13 miles I think) it is just a "hop and a skip" from Paintsville to Prestonsburg on a good four lane road. Actually New Route 80 makes a trip to Hazard a lot better than it was in the old days as it is four lane as well. From a more progressive look at alcoholic beverages to four lane highways eastern Kentucky has really improved in the last thirty years.
Matt on another note are you any relation to Keith Colvin who would be about 46 now or his younger brother Kevin Colvin? I had Keith in class when I taught at Prestonsburg back in the late 1970's. I think that they had relatives in Paintsville.

You know I don't really understand why something which is considered legal and normal in so many areas is considered illegal in some areas. My county which is Floyd has been legally "wet" since 1982 and the city of Pikeville has been legally "wet" since 1983. All of Magoffin Co. became legally "wet" in 1986 and Wolfe Co. I believe in 1991.
To be perfectly honest I wasn't sure how Floyd Co. would go in the 1982 "wet-dry" election. The "dries" tried to scare the people by saying we would have "dives, honky tonks and roadhouses" if we voted wet. At that time I wasn't sure what a dive was but I knew the people in Lexington made it just fine and was legally wet and that Perry Co. was making strides of progress in business and Hazard was going to be the center of a television station that was going to be built in eastern Kentucky. If these "wet" areas were making progress then selling alcohol legally didn't hurt them and I thought it might even help us economically. I have been in a county that has legally sold alcoholic beverages for over 25 years now and I can't see how it has harmed us in anyway. We always were "wet" but we just bought it on the sly from local bootleggers or a long trip to Perry Co. or to a "wet" magisterial district in Magoffin Co.
It really is hard to tell how these local option elections will go. I thought for sure Paintsville would vote "wet" in 1982 but they voted no. There have been "wet-dry" elections since 1982 and Paintsville votes no every time. I really don't understand that but it is hard to predict how the local option elections will turn out but I think the people of Floyd Co. did the right thing for us.

I like Land Shark a lot - and not just because I'm a huge Parrothead. My wife likes Corona (I have no idea why) and when I drink it, I have to really load it up with limes to kill the "skunky" flavor. There's no way I can drink Corona without the fruit. Land Shark is similar, but I have no problem drinking it without any lime - but it's pretty good with a small lime wedge too.

Sorry to not respond prior to now. I definitely agree, the wet/dry issue puzzles me to no end, especially in Johnson County's case :shrug1:. Just losing out on tax dollars, perhaps a half-way decent restaurant, and encouraging more late night "beer-runs" to other counties :thumbdn:
But, I'm sort of highjacking the thread now :icon_mrgreen: Sorry.
Matt,
I hijacked the thread too because I moved the discussion from good beer to "wet-dry" elections. Your Heiniken sounds good. In the case of Paintsville though the two towns of Prestonsburg and Paintsville are so close together that a thirteen mile drive on a good four lane highway is no problem at all. So in reality when you are in Paintsville it is almost like you live in a "wet" area.

And in other news, Schlitz owner, Pabst Brewing Co. plans to revive Sterling, Falls City, Hudepohl and Stroh's. ;)
Spoke to a marketing rep for Pabst a few years ago who had donated promotional products to our golf scramble. He said that Pabst was repackaging their marketing and targeting a much younger audience, much in the way Buffalo Trace is aimed at younger drinkers.
I'm curious as to whether they'll do the same with Schlitz? I wonder how many young drinkers know antything about Schlitz other than the jokes made about it?

Dug up some info this weekend about Land Shark Lager. Margaritaville Brewing Company is a joint venture between Jimmy Buffet and Anheiser-Busch. Appears AB is trying to get some of the Corona market with this and Bud Lite Lime.
They could start by boosting the alcohol content of Land Shark Lager from 3% to at least 4.5%. Still a good tasting beer, however.

What's up with Yengling being available in certain areas but not in others? I could understand if it were a regional beer (Pennsylvania) but my first exposure to it was in Florida while on vacation this summer. To the best of my knowledge, I can't get it here in southwest Indiana.

We've got a bit of a Yuengling cabal working out of my bar here in Lexington. When I go to upstate NY (or my brother comes down), I bring some back with me. Whenever friends go to Myrtle Beach or Hilton Head, they bring some back. It's also in Nashville now, so we've got a connection there. We're hearing rumors through the beer distributors that it'll hit Lexington next fall, but who knows, really?
Oh, and as good as it is in a bottle, Yuengling is twice as tasty on-tap. Every bar in Charlotte has it on-draft, it seems.

Yup! Checked it out late last night. We'll be in the Smokies hiking this winter. I'mo check Food Lyon in G-burg and Pigeon Forge for availability. I checked a few pubs on line there that have a cross section of micro-brewed and imports on tap and bottles and came up empty handed. Not even any Arrogant Bastard Ale - which is also excellent brew.

Based solely on anecdotal evidence and nothing official, I have a sneaking suspicion that Fat Tire might only be available in their 22oz bottles in these "new" markets - as least intially.
If I find any in the Great Northern expanses, I'll save you a few. I'm sure there'll be a tailgating opportunity soon enough where we can do a brew-hostage-exchange.

Both provide a wide variety of domestic micro brews and import selections on tap and in bottles.
Unfortunately, neither have Yuengling or New Belgium Brewery beers.
If you go to The Ship English Pub, go later in the evening - it's much busier then. We stopped in for dinner after a hike at about 5:30 and there was only 4 other people there at the time. We go to Gatlinburg in the winter to hike up in the smokies during the week, so not much in the way of people that time of year.

Those of you who like Blue Moon... do you drink it with an orange slice or without?
Personal opinion (aware that others often vehemenently disagree)...if I have to put a fruit in my beer, it's not worth drinking.
I used to think so. However, having had Blue Moon WITH the orange, I have to say I do like it. I'm less inclined to drink Blue Moon in the winter months, but when I have I omit the orange.
Just had my first ever Blue Moon with an orange slice, and I must say that it was pretty darn good. It complements a big plate of crow quite nicely, if you catch my drift.

I like the orange slice. Good bars will give you a nice sized slice. Love the draft Bluemoons. Would love to have one of the signs for my downstairs. If I can find one affordable, I'll have it :)
Blue Moon without an orange is like a Corona or XX without a lime. Yeah, they still taste better than any typical american beer, but go to a whole new level with a fresh blast of citrus. There are those who see this as a step above an umbrella drink, but it is simply making a beer taste the best that it can. And if taste wasnt important, wouldnt we all be drinking Milwaukees Best.

Blue Moon with an orange is, IMO, >>>>>> than Corona et al with lime. In fact, I'm having a hard time even putting the two in the same league. Maybe it's because I'm not much of a beer drinker, but IIRC, Corona with lime was basically taking a nasty beer and making it lime-flavored. OTOH, the orange in the Blue Moon actually brought out even more of the inherent flavors of the Blue Moon itself and COMPLETELY changed the way it behaved on the palate. (Yeah, I'm a geek.)

I tend to agree. I can drink Blue Moon without the orange, but the orange does draw out certain characteristics. With Corona and the lime, the lime seems to act as a masking agent. :icon_lol:

I look forward to a day where I've sampled some more beers, and can properly "fit" a beer to my intended meal. The meal can be so much better with the "right" beverage, no matter what that may be.

The comment about Bittberger brought back memories. My son's college roommate worked in Germany one summer at the Bittberger brewery and everybody who worked there got a six pack every day after their shift was over. He shared his- he didn't drink- with some air force guys who lived in his apartment building and when he came home they threw him a day long party to repay his generosity. I never really liked it compared to the great belgian beers.

Ok, have to ask you all. As I've mentioned here, I like to visit/consult beeradvocate.com before trying different brews. Well, out of pure curiosity, I looked up the new Schlitz (stop laughing :icon_mrgreen:). Well, they actually gave it a pretty decent review considering what it is. In fact, their "BA Bros" gave it a B- on average, and the users give it a C+ on average. For comparison's sake, plain Budweiser gets a B- from the Bros, and a D+ from the users.
So, is this a decent beer for its price range or ??? I was actually going to try some this weekend, but my Krogers doesn't have it.

I might have had a bad 6 pack. I liked the initial flavor, but the finish was odd. Nice, high alcohol content, however. Something like 8 - 8.5%.

^ 8.5%, IIRC. And it is a unique finish. A little spicy, maybe even peppery. I've not seen the six-packs of this. Only comes in the four-pack down this way.
Give it another shot. :thumbup::big_grin:

You may be right WRT 6 vs 4. My wife buys my beer for me so I may have misremembered the number in the beer / wine chiller.

I'm a huge fan of the samplings from Great Lakes Brewing Company, quality beer, great taste, some of the sampling can be very rich and their brew pub in Cleveland is fantastic. If you ever find yourself in Cleveland stop by their pub and take a tour of the brewery as it is quite eco-friend and better than all but the most expensive specialty beers.
Got a couple ready for the Alabama game today.

Just had a good one for this time of the year: Goose Island's Harvest Ale. Great balance of malts and hops (maybe a little strong on the hops, but as I mentioned earlier in this thread, that's the way I like it ), and a great variety of "seasonal" spices. Haven't had many "Fall" brews, so it may be par for the course. But something tells me this one would be hard to beat.
I've got Abita's "Fall Fest" on deck for this weekend; I'll report back with the results. ;)

Very good beer.

Dark, but lighter flavored than say Guinness. Little to no head. I've had it chilled but it tastes better at room temperature.

This is a good point that we often forget to include. Arrogant Bastard is definitely better after you've let it sit a little while after pouring.

Look forward to trying some tasty new brews tomorrow at the tailgate  By tomorrow night, I will have tried Stone's Smoked Porter, and will let you all know what I think. It is my first porter, to my knowledge, so I'm looking forward to hopefully pairing it with some awesome BBQ at the WCN tailgate

I forgot to talk about the tailgate. Well, I tried some new beers. Rockober brought Anchor Steam, Cooper's stout, and perhaps something else? I enjoyed both, and I see that Pazzo's has the anchor steam on tap. That would be a good option.
Also, I liked my Stone Smoked Porter a lot. It was really nice with our great bbq

I enjoyed the Stone IPA you brought Matt. I will have to buy another 6-pack to try. Anchor Steam has always been a favorite of mine and I thought the Cooper's stout was a great stout. If you are in the mood for a hearty beer, give it a try.
I also brought Stella Atrois and Blue Moon-Pumpkin. I like Stella but the Blue Moon Pumpkin was just ok. I wouldn't buy it again.

I wish we could have made it out there. I've been wanting to try a Stone IPA for quite some time now. :)
Rogue Dead Guy Ale and Young's Double Chocolate Stout are probably my top two at the moment, with the DFH 90 still right up there.
I've got a DFH 120 aging at the moment, but I can't see myself drinking it. :icon_neutral: I like these brews for the flavor, not the affect. And at 21% ABV, I can see this one having a little too much affect.:big_grin: (More of a "taster" here than a "drinker". Love trying new brews, and this thread has introduced many new ones to sample...)

You were missed Littlemeyer. I need to try some offerings from Rogue. Where did you find the DFH 120? I think Pazzo's has had it sometimes, but they don't now to my knowledge. I have this sneaky feeling that I wouldn't like it much.

^ Got the 120 at this great little place in Paducah, Roof Brothers Wine & Spirits (http://www.roofbrothers.com/selection.htm). Click the link to see their selection, which is incredible for rural western Ky.
Don't know about you, but at somewhere between 12-15%, the alcohol really starts to stand out and overwhelm the other flavors in the beer. That's the point where I draw the line. Like you, I've got a feeling that the 120 will be just too much alcohol to even notice the hops. But I had to get it, and possibly try it, as it's the self-proclaimed "Holy Grail" for hopheads. :icon_biggrin:

I feel the same way. The Double Bastard is as about as much alcohol as I could stand in a beer.

Had a Bell's Two Hearted Ale today at Pazzo's. It's an IPA, and I would say it is most comparable to Dogfishhead 60 minute, but with more hops. Pretty good beer. Doesn't top Stone's IPA for me, but it is still pretty tasty.

Bell's also has a "Hopslam Ale", which is their Double IPA. Those on beeradvocate.com who've had it say that there's a strong honey presence in it, along with, of course, an abundance of hops. It's on my "to try" list, but as it's seasonal, I've not been able to get one yet.
Almost picked up a Two Hearted Ale just the other day, but had to go with DFH 90 Minute instead. Still my favorite...
Matt, I think that Pazzo's has a Rogue Dead Guy Ale Pint Night coming up soon (this Wednesday, perhaps). You should definitely get over there and try that one.

Rogue Dead Guy
Two of my favorites from Rogue. Each winter when we go to Gatlinburg for hiking we finish the day at "The Ship" English Pub. Dozens of selections on tap - including the above.

I just got back from Pazzo's (Go Funky Chicken Hoagie! :icon_mrgreen: ), and had a Rogue Dead Guy ale. Pretty good for sure, and might be one of my favorite ales right now. I also noticed they had the Rogue Shakespeare next to it, but I didn't want to try both on my lunch.
I'll certainly have another Rogue Dead Guy ale, especially if it's available on tap like it is right now. Thanks for the suggestion :thumbup:

Just back home from Pazzo's - the Friday special, 3 toppings on a slice for $3.75, and Dead Guy Ale - AWESOME!!!
(and lunch was on jwade - YAY!)
I've finally found a beer to replace the Sam Adams Summer Ale.
Mmmm...beer.
