View Full Version : Songs and bands that are corny or lame that you enjoy anyway

Everyone has some of those guilty pleasures, songs and bands that are generally considered by others to be corny or lame but that you enjoy, though not in a particularly proud way - you'll play them in the car if you're alone but generally not with company, for instance. What are some of yours?

My all-time guilty pleasure is Richard Harris' MacArthur Park.
"Someone left the cake out in the rain.
I don't think that I can take it,
Because it took so long to make it....."
:eek::eek::eek:
What can I say? I don't understand it myself....

Back in the 90s, Primus was one of those corny bands with funky music that seemed idiotic at the time. As I got a little older, their music has sort of grown on me.

And then there's Afternoon Delight and Chevy Van.

I'd suspect the subject matter may have something to do with your preference for these two :icon_mrgreen: however, there's no explaining why anyone would enjoy listening to any version of "MacArthur Park"! :icon_lol: Speaking of which, have you ever heard the version performed by William Shatner? Yes, it's as horrific as it sounds.
I don't think them at all a "corny or lame" band, maybe a little obscure, but I really like the "Raspberries".

Some things just defy explantion. What can I say? The first time I head the song, I was sitting in a kitchen in San Francisco (1968), peaking on some nice microdot. I thought it was one of the most profound things I'd ever heard.....;)
Sometimes you just like what you like. :icon_mrgreen:

When I'm in the garage working or in the drive washing the car, I listen to WAKY.
Everytime the Romeo and Juliet by the Reflections come on, I crank up the radio while Di just rolls her eyes. :icon_lol:

Please forgive me (or not ;)) but I have a funny Abba story. My sister is three years younger and even though her brother went off the chart with the British invasion and the west coast music she was listening to Johnie Mathes instead of Jimi Hendrix...who knows how these things happen. Two years ago I was at her home in Villa Hills and she was playing her normal boring music :icon_rolleyes::icon_rolleyes: when someone asked her to play something more lively: She put on Abba :eek::eek::eek:...Feats don't fail me now...

Ah, you beat me to it. My wife is amazed to this very day that I own one of thier CD's. Amidst the Tool, Korn, Alice 'N Chains, and Soundgarden it's a little out of place. But, it gets played, none the less.

I'll go way back for one (I was young and had bad taste, forgive me...)
Freddie and the Dreamers. I remember "doin' the Freddie" at the roller rink. :icon_redface:I have to admit, it was a fun song. BUT as the thread title says...very corny.

Journey.
I've never been able to figger out why I liked this band so much in high school from `78 to today - although, my enthusiasm for `em has waned significantly.
Cheesy power ballads, simple formulaic melodies, bridges, etc.

The Monkees: Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork . . . They'd probably be front and center for me in this topic. They recorded some solid and catchy tunes.

I really appreciate the offer but I found the Freddie and the Dreamers "Ultimate Collection" CD on Amazon and ordered it before I saw this post. It's a 2 disc, 62 song package. It was only 15.98, I couldn't resist.

I was a rain storm away from seeing The Beatles at Crosley Field and also missed on The Doors, Cream, Pink Floyd to name a few. Being a first year boomer does have it's props as does being lucky (Big Brother and the Holding Company, The Who, The Kinks, The Grateful Dead, Poco, Paul Simon at Cincinnati Music Hall) ...ain't no time to wonder why.
