Interested in a particular genre? Or just a good movie in general? Forrest Gump never gets old to me. I've been wanting to rent "The Outlaw Josey Wales" here recently, but haven't found it yet.

Really, Rambo? I like action flicks, but it shocks me to hear anyone to recommend it. I hadn't read any reviews on it because well I assumed....

My husband rented The Great Debaters. We haven't watched it yet.

Not really into the horror flicks or slapstick comedy. More into drama, action-adventure and yes those "chick flick" romantic comedies like When Harry Met Sally and Sweet Home Alabama.

I think I have seen the Outlaw Josey Wales several times years ago. It seemed to be on TV quite a bit.

We've just gotten into Lost on DVD. (I watch zero TV, and I always thought this show would be interesting. It is.) Been a running marathon for about three weeks, but we're almost through Season 4. Haven't rented a real movie in a long time, though I want to see Be Kind Please Rewind and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

And although it isn't on DVD yet, I HIGHLY recommend Iron Man. Quite possibly the best summer blockbuster I've ever seen.

Give it six months, Iron Man will be here. I might have to break down and get a BluRay Player for Christmas. :icon_biggrin:

Interesting flipping through channels today, I noticed that The Outlaw Josey Wales was on might have been A&E as was the Notebook on local channel. We watched Monsters, Inc. It sucked us in. We hadn't seen it on our 50". Seems a lot of movies we have seen before suck us in when they are on our HD channels. Maybe we need to rewatch some of our action flicks.

I've been impressed with Crowe's skills since Cinderella Man. On a side note, we saw American Gangster a few weeks after the History Channel's documentary about Frank Lucas. Definitely piqued my interest in the movie.

We rented Be Kind Rewind last night. Stars Jack Black and Mos Def, directed by the guy that did the brilliant Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Unusual movie. Seems improvised for the most part. Not insanely funny, but has its moments of wit. Its biting commentary of Hollywood and the video store culture is worth the price of the movie. There's a 2-minute scene where Danny Glover goes into a modern video store and takes notes that is absolutely perfect.

But I recommend it because it has a ton of heart. Seems like everyone who played in it was having fun. And it's so, so different. Never really seen anything like it.

Walk Hard - Funny if you like that sort of movie

Juno - One of the best pictures of last year, definite must see, IMHO

Atonement - IMO, the most overrated movie of last year. Didn't care for it at all.

Michael Clayton - I really liked that one quite a bit.

American Gangster - Most underrated movie of last year.

We saw Atonement "blind".

Neither one of us knew a thing about it or had talked to anyone who had, thus, no expectations WRT "overrated".

We both were struck by the ending.

It's a movie that was really good during 95% of it, IMO, but 5% of it tends to taint the entire thing.

Last night we watched Rendition, a very good thriller about an American citizen arrested and charged with terrorism.

The wife and I finally got around to watching Semi-Pro with Will Farrell. Pretty funny stuff, if you like his sort of movies.

We rented that last week. It was decent, but probably a step down from his others. Comedies can work a lot of different ways, but I usually judge the kind Farrell does on how many times I fall out of my chair. Semi-Pro had only one laugh-out-loud moment, and that was when Farrell got punched in the stomach. (Also thought the aley-oop bit was great. And the guy playing Dick Pepperfield, the announcer, was absolutely brilliant. He was almost worth the price of the rental.)

I still think Talladega Nights is the funniest thing he's ever done.

While that particular exchange was classic, and while the "message" of the scene is integral to the movie, the scene itself is questionable.

Day-Lewis, who is freakin' fantastic in this movie, overplays that scene. It became way too over the top and leans into the absurd. It was the only time, for me, that the artifice broke and I felt I was sitting in a theater.

But the movie is a masterpiece of filmmaking. Its cinematography, its score, the acting of the minor characters -- a pretty great film.

Adam Sandler needs to stick to comedies. I don't really want to be reminded of reality when I go to the movies. I would have liked Click better had the stuck the the comedy instead of getting serious.

The movie was more of a character study than I thought it would be. As a matter of fact, the film was totally off from what I came in expecting. But the acting was good and I don't believe there is a role Day-Lewis can't play. For one of his best movies, check out In The Name Of The Father. I think it's an early 90's movie about his family being thrown in prison because they were suspected IRA bombers. A GREAT film.

I get most of movies in HD on OnDemand (Comcast). Lately I've been watching several movies per week.

The best:

No Country for Old Men--a classic, IMO. My wife found it unbearable because of the tension that seemed to permeate every scene, mostly due to the Javier Bardem. No question that he deserved his Oscar.

The Illusionist--watched this one on a whim the other night and got sucked in. Edward Norton was excellent and I'm totally smitten with for Jessica Biel.

Michael Clayton--Good flick, loved the performance of Tilda Swinton. Also enjoyed seeing Sydney Pollack act. Tom Wilkinson's turn as the bipolar attorney was also compelling.

Both National Treasure movies. I liked them, wife liked them even more.

American Gangster...Babel...and maybe the best of all, The Departed.

Just watched this a couple of nights ago. Day-Lewis and Dano were great in the movie and I loved the pace and cinematography. The score, however, sounded like it was pinched from an episode of Lost and seemed a little out of place. All in all, it was a tough movie to like. Other than DDL's son, there was no rooting interest. Neither of the two adversaries had any redeeming qualities.

Midnight Clear, You and Me and Everyone We Know, and Primer are all good independent films.

The Other Boleyn Girl is better than I thought it would be.

The Count of Monte Cristo is an all-time favorite of mine.

Do not waste your money on either The Love Guru, Zohan, or Get Smart. All are sub par new flicks.

Hmm. I thought it was one of Scorcese's best films, maybe his best.

You mentioned Primer above. Great movie (but really complicated). Those guys pretty much made that movie with a handheld and cut it on their computer. I actually watched the DVD commentary, and it was really interesting to hear them talk about the corners they cut to avoid money issues.

I thought that the Departed was good but hardly his best, in fact, if the Academy didn't owe Scorcese, I wouldn't have thought that it deserved Best Picture.

I have to agree about the Illusionist, I didn't know what to expect but absolutely loved it.

Stop now if you haven't seen No Country for Old Men - and care to ever see it.

I thought that Javier Bardem was the best villian that I've seen on film in quite sometime. Everytime his character was on the screen you knew something was going to happen, and it was going to be bad. The quarter toss scene at the gas station, IMHO, was one of the most suspenceful that I've ever seen.

I had 2 issues with the movie that made me feel that it didn't deserve the Oscar.
1) I thought that for a hired killer, Woody Harrelson's character was caught & killed far too easy.
2) Josh Brolin's character seemed to have so many narrow escapes that you never felt that he was safe, however, to kill the guy off camera just seemed to quick, almost as if they needed to shorten the movie so they deleted a bunch of scenes.

RE: BrassowFan

1) Sort of agree there. And he was so good in that role, I wanted more of him. But ultimately I thought Harrelson was just a foil for Anton. A way for the filmmakers to show (or McCarthy, though I'm not sure if that particular character shows up in the novel) how demonically wicked and no-nonsense the villain was...just in case we missed it in the first hour and a half. : )

2) That scene (or lack thereof) has been talked about a million times on a million different sites by people more keen and tuned in than I. But my interpretation is that the movie is "about" good and evil, the balance of the two. When Brolin's character sleeps with the woman in the hotel (some have disagreed that he sleeps with her, but I believe he does), he throws off fate. He makes a decision that he didn't have to; he goes against the "flip of the coin," as it were. And so he is punished. This is mirrored by Anton's going out of his way to kill the wife and getting punished in the car accident. I feel like one of the messages of the film is that some things happen for a reason, but if the human hand steps in and causes things to happen, then hell may indeed break loose.

I like your interpretation and upon reflection, I'd agree. I have been among those who didn't think that he slept with her, therefore I didn't come to the same conclusion. Thinking about it though, I would probably agree that he did as directors rarely insert a character like that for no reason whatsoever.

Our HD OnDemand movies are 6.99. Like everything else, cable would sell more if they would lower their price.

The ones we have to pay for are $4.99. (Comcast) Newer movies go on that rotation, but after a time they move over to the free list--there is a long list of free HD movies, some good and some so-so--or onto the HBO/Showtime/Cinemax/Starz/etc. HD list. Those are free if you are a subscriber. We got a bundle deal on the movie sites, so we subscribe to all of them. Of the movies I listed in my list, we paid for No Country for Old Men, American Gangster, and Michael Clayton. The rest were "free".

Netflix has some HD titles, but so much of my movie-watching happens on a whim that I haven't signed on yet. I like pulling up the OnDemand menu and surfing around to see what's available. I would never have rented the Illusionist ahead of time, but it was free on OnDemand and turned out to be a really pleasant surprise.

I searched IMDB and apparently on there it's titled "Butterfly on a Wheel" but apparently the title was changed for some reason.

Death at a Funeral-

10,000 B.C. was my pick and as excited as i was to see it, made me more dissapointed after watching it. I really thought with what they had to work with it lacked in almost all parts. I was expecting something Apocolypto-esque but with added CGI for the mammoths, saber tooths, etc. and got nothing of what I hoped for...just dissapointed.

Death at a Funeral was my girlfriends choice and it was a hysterical movie. I'm not sure how to describe it without sounding extremely crazy, but definitely something I would reccomend to anyone looking for a good of the wall comedy.
