This story is from 2006 ...
When Self was head coach at Tulsa, he hired Gillispie as an assistant. The decision was based on advice from other coaches who said Gillispie recruited Texas as well as anyone available. Gillispie spent five years working under Self before taking over at UTEP for two seasons and then moving to A&M before last season.
The two maintain a close relationship and speak often.

incidentally, Texas A&M under Coach Gillispie was the FIRST Big XII South squad to win at Allen Fieldhouse since the formation of the conference ...

LAWRENCE --- Bill Self can spin the chance encounter as if Billy Gillispie was a tightwad.
Gillispie, in turn, can pretend that he sensed Self never would pay him back.
The two coaches didn't really know each other when they were in line together at the doorway of a summer basketball tournament in Las Vegas.
"I went to pay and they didn't take credit cards, and I didn't have enough money to pay," Self recalled Monday during the Big 12 coaches teleconference. "I didn't know Billy that well, but I knew he was (an assistant) at Baylor and I said, 'If you can float me, I'll go down to the money machine and get it to you right after the session's over.
"He said, 'No,' and made me hit somebody else up, and that was the first time I'd ever talked to him. He turned me down."
Gillispie, the Texas A&M coach who will welcome Self and his Kansas team to College Station for a 7 p.m. game on Wednesday, chuckled when asked about denying the loan.
"Luckily, he didn't hold it against me, but absolutely not. If he ever wanted to borrow money, I wasn't going to loan it," Gillispie said. "I did loan him money, but I never got it back, so I think I had the foresight before I ever knew him that this would not be money well spent.""
