Well our biggest fear has come to past. This morning's CJ is reporting FA will no longer fly to Denver from here. Had a trip to Albuquerque via Denver booked in September. Wrote them an eMail asking for alternatives. :icon_cry:

Oh, no. Hope you get that settled, Cathy. I have a feeling we're in for a lot of changes.

That's no good.
Does anyone understand United saying that they're going to 3 day trips minimum or over a Saturday night? What does that do for an airline?

I don't quite understand that either. I read something about this once being a policy, to keep larger-budget corporations from booking cheap seats for single-day business trips.
At any rate, I wonder if it could be a way to set the stage for a new fee, similar to the extra leg-room charge...trips shorter than a 3 day duration or those that don't involve a Saturday night stay would cost more. Just a guess.

The only thing that I can guess is that they will include a surcharge if the trip is less than the minimum, therefore gouging those on business trips.

Frontier, known as F9 by their IATA identifier and FFT by their ICAO identifier, is like many others in that they are feeling the crunch of fuel prices (among other things). Jet A runs roughly $6.20 a gallon. Frontier mainly runs Airbus 319/318s which cost anywhere between $20000 to $50000 to fill up depending on the length of the trip. That has made it extremely hard for them restructure after they filed for chapter 11, which was due to their credit card processor (First Data) deciding they would withhold 100% of the carriers proceeds from ticket sales. The good news, is that they sold 4 aircraft at a sale price of $212 million, so they should now have a bit of capital behind them. Still, Frontier ditching KSDF (Louisville) is not a surprise. That route is not very lucrative since there are many other well established airlines that serve Standiford.
Still, I think you should call them (1-800-432-1359) and let them know about your reservations. Frontier is one of the few airlines with decent customer service and customer values. They would more than likely refund your ticket so you can book with another carrier. You've got plenty of options (AA, DAL, NW, UAL, WN). Hope you get it sorted out.

Thanks misterbluecat. Fortunately, these tix were only $90 a piece since they screwed up our trip to Vegas last September. Someway, somehow we will make the trip if at all possible. If they don't answer my eMail within a few days, I will call. Last time I was on the phone with them for a long time and don't have time here at work right now to do that. I understand the plite of Airlines these days. Seems to me something is going to have to be done about air travel. Its too important. And I'm not just talking about vacations.

Didn't you book your trip to Vegas thru FA? Better keep an eye on it if you did.

Yes I did...worse case senario is I drive. The Louisville thing also hurts me in that it is cheaper for me to fly to Louisville, Ky. that northern Kentucky (that airport needs to remove Greater Cincinnati from it's name as there is nothing great or greater about Cincinnasti).

You will probably start seeing less variations of aircraft type by 2015 with more fuel efficient ones, such as the 787 and A350. But that will not be the end all be all. The best step for airlines will be to merge and downsize. Sooner or later the US will have only 3 or 4 airlines operating, instead of the dozen or so that are currently buzzing around. Until then, you will be forced to suffer by incurring silly surcharges for luggage and being forced to pay for food and drinks. If you can remember back to the days before deregulation, there were roughly 3 dozen airlines in the US. How things have changed. The other thing that hurts air travel among leisure travellers is the TSA. Their rules and regulations have become so restrictive it's almost a joke now. Sure, I'm all for thwarting terrorists, but let's do it without scaring away travellers by being invasive and violating personal privacy.

Cathy, Just for grins I checked airfares of other carriers between Louisville and Denver and found them reasonable: Check Delta, American, United and Contennial...these all involve one stop to get to Denver.

Thanks for checking. Frontier was very nice and cooperative. Gave me a full refund. Booked on Delta. Was less than $100 more for 2 the 2 tix. Could have used the ones we had if we drove to Indy, but would have involved an over night stay since our flight leaves at 7 a.m. So the trip is still on :) Oh, and I was smart enough to book it on a weekend when UK has an open football date in Sept :icon_mrgreen:

Actually it hasn't. Based on the price of crude, and the fact that the economy just had the worst June since the Great Depression, the worst fear is that Frontier - along with American and US Air will not survive the year.
Even more frightening is that General Motors is the next candidate to be added to the list. The country survived losing "big steel", but this is a different game altogether.

US Air has been on thin ice for years financially. American has enough captial, as do all the other legacy carriers, to survive until at least spring of 2009. I doubt any legacy carriers will go bust this year, but some smaller ones like F9 might buy the farm.
