View Full Version : Out of Conference Rivals

My original thread in Ribbing/Rivalry didn't go as planned as it got hijacked by a Cards fan.
First I want to thank those of you who have welcomed me. It's always good to have friendly discussions with a rival.
After reading some of the posts I see Louisville, UNC, and Duke mentioned. Of these three teams which one would you guys rather beat. I'm guessing UNC since you guys are 1 & 2 in the all time wins category. Or is it UL because of the Pitino thing or maybe Duke because of the dirty play when Chritian Laettner stomped one of your players?
For UT it will always be Tiger High because of the in state rivalry.

I guess UNC cause for some reason. They piss me off.

UNC and Louisville are right up there but beating Duke into the ground has always been my biggest wish. The order is Duke, Louisville, UNC. Kansas and UT are currently 4th and 5th on my list. :)

For me duke and unc is tied , to beat both in one year would be like wonderful .
then loserville and iu and tn would round out my top five !

All of those teams are really neck and neck. It really boils down to how each team has effected you over the course of the rivalry.
For me I would say Duke...I was a kid and the whole Lattener deal made me cry myself to sleep...I will never let that go.

Each year it seems they over hype the Duke/UNC game to much for my liking. It's on ESPN all week and most times it never lives up to the game they've been predicting. I won't even begin with Dick Vitale.
I think the majority of us that live outside of North Carolina couldn't care less about this game. The last 5 to 10 years ESPN has become the ACC channel.

Duke....has to be. I hate them more than anyone. Don't mind UNC that much, don't like UL, but I absoultely despise Coach K (still respect the hell out of him though) and Duke

I would imagine my generation would say Duke first. Many might say UF is up there.
Here's all the explanation I need.

I despise all of the teams that you guys have mentioned. lol However, I think my biggest beef remains with UNC/Duke. Vitale and all the other ACC cronies talk about "Ohhh.... tobacco road baby. unmatched rivalry baby! tradition like no other!!!!"
Add Carolina and Dukes championships together, and how many do you have? There is no other state that breathes basketball like kentucky, except maybe for Indiana. No team has been AS relevant throughout the HISTORY of college basketball as Kentucky. (Also, as a side note, I HATE UCLA. If not for a 10 year period in history, they would be nothing more than speck on the radar.)
As for a rivals game, I love to watch the UK vs. UL and UK vs. UT games... especially UT as of late now that they compete. ( not a knock to you volfan, just a statement...)

This stuff happened over ten years ago, and I still get peeved.

I would absolutely love to see us beat Duke more than any other team, though UNC and Loserville are in a close second. I am positive this will not happen as long as coach K is around, but I wish to see us play Duke or Carolina in a game that is officiated fairly. I know we would beat Duke in such a game, and positive we would put away Carolina, because both coaches curse and whine and lose composure whenever they don't get nearly all of the calls. If anything, I want to play Duke in a neutral location, far from either of the home courts, with referees from a mid-major conference. A game with correct calls is all I want to see when facing any team, but especially a rival.

it will never happen....duke and UNC get into the mix and the rule book suddenly becomes composed with vanishing ink....
i'm really really curious to see what happens to Duke when Coach K retires or enters into eternity....

i'm with you on this one Will, anybody Kentucky plays is a rival, at least for the 2 plus hours the game is on....some rivalries go wayyyyyy deeper though obviously....
without question my biggie dislikes are UNC, Indiana, Kansas (no offense 7YEARHAWK) and L-ville in non conf. play.....you can't really say Duke....we haven't played them in a long time and they're not a continual match up....but UNC, IU, KU and UL are my biggies....because they're continual matchups and you know we'll be playing them....so it keeps the fire of rivalry brewing....
but i don't care if it's the #1 ranked team in the land or the #1000....beat 'em by 50 and GET THE W!!!!!!!.....we are the frikkin' Kentucky Wildcats!!!!!!!!!!! GET THE W!!!!!!!!
but when you get down to brass tacks, EVERYBODY is a rival in my eyes....

Volfan, you have raised my perception of UT fans immeasurably...Kudos. And welcome to the WCN!
I have to say that I will always value wins against top SEC opponents a bit more than out of conference (except in March of course). I truly hope you have made your peace with your God and have prepared yourself for the inevitible ascendancy of our Program. BCG will put the Cats back into the perennial top five and Conference wins against him will become very rare indeed.
Having said all that...if we had to lose a conference game I would much prefer to lose a game to the Vols than to the Gators. Out of conference is a no-brainer...Duke. I was 21 and angry when Laettner dropped that shot on us. But, I would gladly lose to Duke in December in exchange for two or three wins against UT in Feb/March.

I personally hate duke and think they have been overated since the early ninety's. The only reason why they win is the officiating. I realize we don't play them on a regular basis which only enhances the rivalry. After Duke I would have to pick UNC because of all the tradition we have between our two programs and our annual match ups. Third I would put Flordia just because they're players of late are cocky brats. Fourth I would go with UL because of the instate rivalry. To round out the top five I will have to put in Tenn more of a rivalry on the rise because UT is more competitive now. I left Indiana out due to the fact since the General has left so has the rivalry. One new rivalry I would like to see added is Minnesota for reason I believe that don't need to be explained.

For me it would be North Carolina first as I know how much their fans hate us. The second would be Florida, then Duke, IU, UCLA and then Tennessee. I also think the way I feel about UNC would have a little to do with how good they are going to be this year. Roy though may choke during the NCAA tournament he has a history of choking.

Thanks ontheroadto8. I think we all know that each program has it's less than desirable fans and I'm to old to play childish name calling games. No matter if you dislike UK or any other historic program you give respect when it's due.
I fully believe that CBG will have UK back at the top. I don't think the program or the fans would sit by and let it become a run of the mill program. UK has to much pride and tradition to let that happen.
I just hope Coach Pearl can continue getting good recruits and run with you guys and get a win here and there. Believe me, I'm not one of these Vols fans that thinks we're an elite program now. We have much more to accomplish before we can even start to think that.
I've really enjoyed the discussions on this board and find it more inviting than any other Cats board I've seen, so kudos to you Wildcat Nation.

So did IU obviously but working in IN with a bunch of Loosier fans I have to say the rivalry still exists here. I am going to so enjoy our little get together this year. Forgive me Lord for taking pleasure in others pain.:icon_lol:

Same here!! I was 13 and I will never forget the sickness in my stomache as I cryed myself to sleep that night. I still tear up when I watch something on the UNFORGETTABLES. I live in Chattanooga and I am in the heart of Vols country, so that puts UT on the list. My list would be, in order:
1. Duke~1992. I don't need to say more
2a. Loserville~ When Rick went there it got REAL personal
2b. Florida~ J. Noah
3. UT~ This has got REAL good over the past few years
4. UNC~ UNC=Duke-lite

You rang? :icon_lol:
I don't think Kansas has any animosity toward Kentucky at all ...
And it seems like a few of us (myself included) are almost embarrassed about the 150-point game.
We used to feel the same way about North Carolina, until "The Incident with Roi."
But this year's Final Four went a long way to evening the score ... :icon_mrgreen:
You'd hope all of that bluster that ESPN wastes on Duke/UNC would shift toward UK/UNC/KU as the Heels and Hawks close in on the Cats in All-Time wins ...
If they interrupt broadcasts for Barry Bonds homeruns, you'd think this would be as big a deal!!! :shrug1:
And hey ... we ALL hate Duke

Welcome and a great question...since I grew up in northern Kentucky and had to listen to Cincinnati Bearcat "stuff" they are number one...and they haven't beaten us in men's basketball since 1939...I wasn't even born ...2: Indiana 3: North Carolina 4: Louisville 5: Duke.
And I root for all SEC teams as long as they are not playing my Cats

well, there's certainly none from this Kentucky fan towards KU or KU fans....i would honestly have to say that of all the elites, KU is the one i dislike the least....howzzat?.....it's just the way i see it all the "elites" are in steep cosmic competition with one another to stay "elite" and hold top honors and Kansas is one of them, that's all....some programs are here and gone into time only to look back on their moment of glory....some programs are there to stay and work dilligently to maintain it... Kentucky, UNC, KU, UCLA, IU, duke....these are those programs....not that other programs don't work hard, etc, etc....just not all are "elite"....for instance: uconn, mich state, syracuse, cinncinati, even louisville, all strong programs and progressive programs....but all programs that have had their "eras" and are known for "a coach" that put them on the map or did big things...i personally just hope Kentucky always holds on tighter, stronger, longer and advances further than the others - but heck, that's just me.....haha
we can still be friends can't we 7YRHAWK?

I know this one was about dead but now that I have a moment, I cannot ignore this. There is only one out of conference rivalry that matters. Especially to any fan that is currently residing in or grew up in the great Commonwealth of Kentucky. I have seen UNC and Duke and KU and.... Have you guys gone madddd? One rival, one despised opponent, one little brother/sister that no matter what the game, we must win. Let's keep it real folks, it is nice to play UNC, Duke and the others that are listed here, but there is one game on the schedule that no matter what the records are nor who is on the court, field, swimming pool or whatever the playing surface, everyone knows that it will be an all out war (no disrespect to the troops) and the looser(ville) will have to eat crow in that sport for 365 days until they get another shot. Those other guys may merritt more national TV coverage but nothing comes close in the Commonwealth for coverage than this game. I have seen grown men cry (seriously) after a loss to this team. I mean, not when there was a final four on the line (i.e. Duke) or for anything than just program pride. The Cardinals of UofL are the most hated rival for this Cat. They always have been and always will be. I don't care what any Cardinal fan says or thinks, I don't like them at all. I don't care if we beat them 100000000 times in a row, I want to win the next one just as bad. I don't care if they decide to go to Division 33, I want to whip them. If they decide to change to a high school, we need to play them and whip them. I think red is an awful color for a team and only should be allowed to be seen on a Cat or fan if he has accidentally bled on his clothes.
I have to admit that I will root for them occasionally...........to lose! For anyone out there that doesn't understand this, "Rick Pitino has nothing to do with this. It was there before him and will be there long after he is dead and gone. I don't think true Cat fans need a reason to dislike UofL, it is just a rivalry.
And a very good one.

There are only three rivals that really matter right now, Duke aint one of them.
The three are Lville, TN, and FL. Reason is simple. They all view us as a big game, as we do them, and it it a mutual thing, and this makes for big game atmospheres, and a lot of regional interest, and the stakes in all three games, for both bragging and ranking tend to be very high. I predict as the future unfolds, the good years at KY will be tied to a 3-2 record or better, in these 5 games we will play every season.
Duke doesn't view KY as any kind of rival. NC sees us as an important non conference game but not as a rival so much as a big game. Bet Michigan St. sees us more as a rival than Duke or NC, more regionalism and the Izzo Tubby history helped build it and now? That is a game we need back, useful recruiting game also.
