View Full Version : U.S. Space & Rocket Center - Huntsville, Alabama
The family and I are heading to the Gulf Coast on vacation this coming weekend. We're considering a stopover in Huntsville, Alabama at the US Space and Rocket Center. Has anyone here been there? Is it worth the trip? Link: http://www.spacecamp.com/museum/
Finally, does anyone know any good BBQ joints in the area? I've been to Big Bob Gibson's in Decatur on a previous trip.

Hope you get some answers to your questions, Grub. I've long wanted to go to Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, although I don't know if it's like the one you're considering. Stennis is an engine test facility, and I'd love to witness something like that in progress. That is, if the public is allowed to. Even photographs of it are impressive, imo.

Took my son years ago. He still remembers the trip and at almost 30, a place tops on his list for revisiting one day.
we're still in Florida - Em gave our oldest the option - he said he didnt want to waste any time in getting here - Im a bit sad

We have visited the Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville several times over the years. If you have never been, it is worth the trip. The history of the U.S. space program is visually displayed and there are many interactive exhibits. They also have an IMAX theatre onsite.
It probably meant more to me than my kids since I can remember seeing the first moon landing live on TV.

Mobile, AL has USS Alabama on display. Was used in filming the movie, "Under Siege"
Pensacola has NAS Pensacola. Not sure if the restrictions have been altered since 9/11 but there is an incredible museum there for Naval aviation. Also has Navy OCS.

We saw the Blue Angels in Pensacola last November, then drove to Mobile to spend the night aboard the USS Alabama. We had a great time even though we had to keep up with 50 cub scouts running through the bowels of the ship 'til midnight.
