Gonna be hard to get from Iowa State, I've heard. His dad played basketball there and his mother works there.

In an interview he said he was waiting for Gillispie to offer, though. Who knows. I'm not about to count this staff out.

Hoop Scoop editor and publisher Clark Francis handed out a listing of the rankings for the camp after day one and had Iowa wing Harrison Barnes ranked No. 1. Francis said he was the most consistent and best player in both sessions on Sunday.

The 6-5 Barnes rattled off a list of offers that included Indiana, Kentucky, Iowa State, Iowa, Maryland, TCU, Kansas, Tennessee and DePaul. He averaged 17 points a game as a sophomore at Ames Senior High School and is becoming one of the hottest names in recruiting circles. Hoop Scoop had him ranked No. 17 in the '10 class before the summer and he'll now crack the top 10 and could go higher.

Matt Jones sums the AAU and camp sessions;
http://blog.kentuckysportsradio.com/

Harrison Barnes: The breakout star of the AAU and Camp season. This kid will find himself as a Top 10 player coming out of Ames, Iowa and Kentucky will find itself as the kid’s co-leader along with hometown Iowa State. He will be in Kentucky this week for an AAU tournament and we will speak to him at that time. Barnes to Kentucky could set up the 2010 class to be epic. Watch out for him.

I would love to have this kid, but I would not get excited about this one.

Very hard to compete with a kid's home town. Our only hope is that quality competition and a chance of winning a championship is important to him.

I wish him the best either way.

I've read from several sources that it is between UK and Iowa State. Matt Jones said it's between Iowa, Iowa State and UK. So who knows. I hate to get my hopes up, but this kid along with Orton and Wall would make the best class since before 2004.

Some kids would actually prefer to go away for college. And some kids would prefer to get out from under their parents' eyes and live their lives as they choose. Hopefully he is one of those kids.

One of the best players in the event will be Ames (Iowa) wing Harrison Barnes, who is considered one of the top 10 players in the class of 2010. He made a huge showing at the LeBron James Skills Academy this week and will be playing for All-Iowa Attack team. Among his main suitors are Kentucky and Indiana.

LeBron James Skills Academy: Day Three

Harrison Barnes (http://kentucky.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=2&pr_key=67225)- Steady throughout the camp, Barns has clearly solidified himself as an elite 2010 prospect. He strokes the ball with ease from behind the arc and does everything a small forward is supposed to do inside of the arc.

Exactly, jkeller. That is what I,too, had been thinking as I was reading the thread. Let's indeed hope that Mr. Barnes is one of those kids. :)

Also, yes, goodness, a class of Orton, Wall, and Barnes would be simply FANTASTIC. We can always dream, and some dreams become reality.

From Matt Jones 7/11/2008

— The highlight of the day was the last game of the night at Hoops where I saw Harrison Barnes in action. If you havent seen this 2010 kid in action, go to it quickly….you will be glad you did. Long, a strong scorer and a guy who can take the ball to the basket, Barnes is the real deal. One can easily see why the kid shot up the charts in the last couple of weeks and how he has become one of the top talents in his class. His game was widely attended by coaches from a variety of schools, including Billy Gillispie and Jeremy Cox. Both coaches were there the entire game and were joined by a contingent from schools like Iowa St, UCLA and Kansas. Barnes is exactly what Kentucky needs…an athletic scorer who is long and can take the ball to the basket. UK could use him this year and if early indications are correct that the Cats are on top with him, that is good news. Interesting news tidbit here….UK has a graduate assistant from Ames, Iowa who played on Barnes’ AAU team growing up and then played at Iowa State. He has been an early in on the kid and is a connection that UK has with him that has been unreported.

Barnes excels yet again

By this point in time Harrison Barnes (http://kentucky.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=2&pr_key=67225) should be wearing down. First it was the Nike Hoop Jamboree, then it was the NBA Top 100 camp, after a quick respite he was off to the LeBron James Skills Academy, and now the Kentucky HoopFest. Despite all of that basketball Barnes is no worse for the wear, and that was very obvious on Thursday.

Some kids can just stand out in warm ups, and Barnes is one of them. He has a long athletic build and a perfect release on his jumper that makes onlookers think every shot has to go in.

Playing against the M33M Canada CIA Bounce squad, Barnes simply dominated for All Iowa Attack. Despite having to be a center, and guard a bruiser down low, Barnes held his own on the defensive end, and really did anything he wanted on the offensive end. It started with him going to the rim using both his right and left hands. Then he decided a step back three in a defender's eye was on the docket, and finally an athletic transition slam finished things off.

M33M simply had no answer for Barnes. He finished the game with 25 points, nearly half of his team's total, and continued to show why he quickly becoming one of the most sought after kids in the class.

Harrison Barnes already was considered among the nation's top 10 college basketball prospects in the Class of 2010.

The junior-to-be from Ames (Iowa) Senior High School had an excellent showing at the recent Nike Hoop Jamboree and NBA Players Association Camp.

Then his stock rose even more.

The 6-foot-5 wing was one of the best players at the LeBron James Skills Academy in Akron, Ohio, earlier this week and has continued his solid play at the 25th annual Kentucky HoopFest.

"We knew (Barnes) was good," Hoop Scoop editor Clark Francis said after Barnes stole the show on the opening day of the LeBron camp. "But we never dreamed that he would be both the most consistent and the best player that we would see in both the afternoon and evening sessions."

Barnes, who is playing in the HoopFest with his All-Iowa Attack Black AAU team, was ranked No. 1 in the LeBron camp by Hoop Scoop after one day and finished as the No. 5 prospect overall among the campers.

Funniest quote from Mr. Barnes on Jody Demling's blog today. "With Indiana, I talk to coach (Tom) Crean a lot. We talk about Dwayne Wade and about how personally I stopped liking him. But he wants me to become a big fan."

That made me spit Sun Drop all over my computer. Nothing like dropping a name and the response being, oh yeah I don't like him! Too funny! Now Tom is trying to get him to like Dwayne just to get him to like himself. IU basketball - faaaaantastic!!!

It's been an unforgettable couple of months for Harrison Barnes. Throughout the course of the spring and summer AAU circuit, the 6-foot-6, 196-pound small forward from Ames (IA) Senior High School emerged as one of the top prospects in the 2010 class. Elite college basketball programs from coast-to-coast have extended scholarship offers to the five-star prospect.

Current List: DePaul, Duke, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa St, Kansas, Kentucky, LSU, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, USC, Tennessee, Texas, and TCU.

Ames (Iowa) junior forward Harrison Barnes has become one of the hottest commodities in the Class of 2010. The 6-foot-6 Barnes was said to have played better than any other player last weekend at the Nike Global Challenge in Portland, Ore. He already holds offers from Duke, Indiana, Kentucky, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, LSU, Purdue, Texas, UCLA, USC, Florida and Wisconsin. He told Scout.com analyst Evan Daniels that Louisville, North Carolina and Georgetown are starting to show a lot of interest.

Harrison Barnes (http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/recruiting/tracker/player?recruitId=53946) (6-5, 195)
Junior, Ames, Iowa Barnes may be the most promising 2-guard in the Class of 2010. There is no wasted motion to his game and his skills and athleticism are at the highest level. He possesses the prototypical frame for the 2-guard slot with long arms and overall great length that he uses well on the glass and the defensive end. Barnes is one of the smoothest shooters around; he has a feathery touch out beyond the 3-point line. He is equally good in a catch-n-shoot situation or off the bounce. He moves well without the ball and finds space to get his shot off. His handle is solid, although he could improve finishing with his left hand. His biggest asset may be his pull-up game; he is extremely good in the elbow area of the floor where he rises up and floats over the extended reach of the defender to get his shot off. In addition to all his skills, he isn't afraid to mix it up in the paint. In fact, he was one of the better rebounders of the event.

New ESPNU Super 60 addition 6' 6" Harrison Barnes (http://insider.espn.go.com/ncb/recruiting/tracker/player?recruitId=53946) (Ames, Iowa) was fantastic at the Nike Global Challenge. He has economy of motion to his game along with superior skills and athleticism. Ames' Harrison Barnes unofficially visited Iowa State this weekend. Unofficial visit is somewhat of a loose term in Barnes' case, since Barnes is a regular figure on the Cyclone's campus. The #1 SG in the 2010 class participated in team scrimmages on Friday and Saturday and then attended the football game against South Dakota State with his family. While Barnes hasn't even received an offer from North Carolina yet, you can't overlook the hometown favorite, Iowa State. Also in the mix is Kansas, Kentucky and a host of other basketball power houses. Barnes has an official visit scheduled to Kansas for Late Night in Phog October 17th.

Barnes shows off for Div. I coaches (http://www.gocyclones.com/news.php?ID=312)

By Jeff Stell

Wednesday’s Ames High boys basketball scrimmage wasn’t your typical pickup game.

Not when Coach K is in attendance.

Duke’s Mike Krzyewski was one of roughly a dozen head and assistant basketball coaches, including Iowa State’s Greg McDermott, in the Ames High gym to watch Little Cyclone junior Harrison Barnes in action. This week marks the beginning of when coaches can visit players in home and view open gym and weight room sessions.

“It does feel nice to have big-time names like Coach K come into your gym and watch you play,” Barnes said. “It does show the interest (coaches) have in me.”

Barnes is considered by many scouting services as the top small forward in the country in the Class of 2010. The 6-foot-6 wing boasts an offer list that’s a who’s who of college basketball.
Barnes said he didn’t feel any nerves as he’s been playing in front of an audience of coaches all summer. Barnes attended and played in several of the nation’s biggest summer camps and AAU tournaments across the country this summer.

“I just kind of go with the flow,” Barnes said. “I’m not pressed to make a decision so I’m just going along with it and just trying to get better every day.”

Hitting 3-pointers and slamming homes thunderous dunks, Barnes put on a show for his suitors. Getting on the court with his teammates was the highlight of the night for him.

“It was nice to be out there with my teammates again because we haven’t all played together since the end of last season,” Barnes said. “Just get out there and play and establish the chemistry our team is going to have this year.”

As I walked into the Ames High gym this evening, I couldn’t help pulling out my cell phone, snapping a grainy photo of the man in the black and blue track suit below and texting it to a friend with the line “Guess who this is.”

Some days I sit at a computer uploading files to the Internet and feel like a total sell-out. But some days, my job is just a little bit cooler than that.

On Wednesday I headed to the Ames High gym with Tribune preps writer Jeff Stell for what Stell promised would be a star-studded event featuring the Ames basketball team and an audience most people pay big bucks to see in person. Lucky for Jeff, they all showed up as promised.

In the audience to watch Harrison Barnes and the rest of the Little Cyclones (minus a few who also play football, but plus an assistant coach or two) were Iowa State coach Greg McDermott, Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel, assistants from DePaul, Duke, Kansas, UNI, Iowa, Wisconsin and Kentucky (shout out to Tracy Webster, formerly of Illinois)…

…oh yeah, and that guy in the track suit.

Barnes delivered as usual, dunking, drilling threes, beating everyone else to the basket. He looked like a natural. There’s nothing I can tell you about his performance that you can’t imagine on your own.

But I will post a video soon, just to help out a little.

Anyway, I don’t know that this changes much in terms of Barnes’ recruiting. I doubt he’ll change his mantra and commit to anyone tomorrow. But for a few hours, it was nice to remember that I get paid to watch basketball for a living.

One of those pieces is 6-foot-6, 190lbs small forward Harrison Barnes of Ames (IA) High who is one of the most highly sought players in the country.

FWIW, Jeff Drummond said last night that he thinks all of the above (Kentucky, Minnesota, Duke, etc.) are fighting an uphill battle against Iowa Sate, for whom Harrison Barnes' father had played. For the umpteenth time, I say that I SO BADLY want Mr. Barnes to become a Cat. Too, I was saying that prior to his getting SO much recent praise and attention. I had just been very impressed by what I had read about him, and his name just stuck in my head. I surely hope Coach G can somehow convince him to come in a southeasternly direction to Kentucky. :)

I have been looking for any sign that Harrison Barnes will visit Lexington but it appears UNC is trying to keep him from doing that. I found this on Iowa State board.

The UNC coaching staff is at Ames High right now. (http://www.cyclonefanatic.com/forum/mens-basketball/41524-harrison-barnes.html)

He's going to be a tough get. Just hope he doesn't commit anytime soon and that we have some success on the court this year. That will help a ton.

I'm located 20mins from Ames and my high school plays Ames seeing that they are in our confrence. My friend additionally plays for his team on the younger age group. The word is that he is getting a scholarship from every school out there. I wouldn't count Iowa or Iowa State in it..although I have heard his mother is sick which could be reason for him staying close to home at Iowa State.

Thanks for sharing, attackplayer18. Harrison Barnes is a recruit I had badly wanted to come to Kentucky even prior to his jumping to the top of the charts. I open and read any links about Barnes on WCN.

I had heard that Iowa State has an excellent chance of getting him. I had not known about his mother's being ill, though. :icon_sad: GO CATS!!!

Barnes would be HUGE...no doubt. He's the #1 guy I'd like to see signed from the 2010 class. Of course, I'm hoping he's one of about 3 or 4 big-time recruits from the 2010 class that decides to come play for Coach Cal at UK....

according to Jerry Meyer of Rivals, UK really isn't in the picture for Barnes.

http://kentucky.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=942070

Don't be surprised if Kentucky makes a strong run at Clark. Kentucky really isn't in the picture for Barnes. The bigger question for the Wildcats is whether they like Clark or Roscoe Smith (http://kentucky.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=2&pr_key=68256) better as small forwards.

Man...I hope Barnes is considering UK more than that article leads on.

As for Cameron Clark....that's the first time I've heard anything about him.

Roscoe Smith (http://kentucky.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=2&pr_key=68256), on the other hand...has been mentioned with Kentucky as a possibility for a while now....and from everything I've heard, read and seen about him....I like him a WHOOOOOLE LOT!!!!

Ames (Iowa) forward Harrison Barnes, the No. 1 player in the Class of 2010 according to Scout.com, has his list of schools holding steady at 12.

Among those schools is the University of Kentucky, but the 6-foot-6 Barnes said he's in no hurry to make any decisions.

As far as the interest with UK, Barnes said he's trying to get to know new UK coach John Calipari and his staff. He said he wasn't too familiar with those guys before they left Memphis to take the UK job in April."

They're still in my top 12 and I am starting to develop a relationship with the new staff," Barnes said. "I just want to talk to the staff and get to know them."Barnes said UK has "a stacked roster," after shining the nation's No. 1 recruiting class."

(Calipari) has turned the program around and is looking to do some things," he said.

Too, again, Harrison Barnes has been at the top of my list for a long time, long before he became recognized as one of the very top players in his class. Based on what I have read about him, I would love for Mr. Barnes to become a Wildcat. :5x

Harrison Barnes at Kentucky would be a dream come true!!!

ESPN is rating him as the best player in the 2010 class.

I guess when you're being compared to Kobe Bryant, being considered the best player in your class shouldn't be all that surprising....

This article suggests that he is a KU lean.

I'm going to say it again, 2010 is starting to worry me a little bit. For the amount we are losing I would really like to see a recruit or two sign on pretty soon.

Q: Where will Barnes and Knight go to college?

A: That remains unclear.

Barnes is still considering a number of schools -- everybody from Florida to North Carolina to Iowa State. But sources familiar with his recruitment believe the 6-foot-6 wing will eventually sign with either Duke or Kansas. One person I trust said Duke. Another guessed Kansas. So take that for what it's worth.

As for Knight, the smart money (and even the dumb money) is on Kentucky.

Knight is a dominant point guard, you see, and nobody has coached more dominant point guards in recent years than new Kentucky coach John Calipari. Assuming things go as planned, John Wall will soon become Calipari's third consecutive point guard to be selected in the top five of the NBA Draft. That's a stretch that'll be difficult for Knight to ignore. And even if it wasn't, did you know that Knight happens to have family in the Lexington area?

(He does.)

Again, the smart money has Knight playing for Calipari at Kentucky.

The reports a couple of weeks ago that quoted Harrison Barnes as no longer being interested in UK and upset about the cutting of various players were apparently…well no longer the case. Harrison told the media today that UK is still on his list and that after talking to Calipari again, they were still of real interest to him. Barnes is the #1 player in America to many scouts and is being pursued by all the best…UK is now once again on that list.

Barnes does more than ball
Adam Zagoria
Rivals High (http://highschool.rivals.com/)

While Barnes won't be playing football in college, he does plan to pick a basketball program at a school with a strong academic reputation and a good business program. He maintains a 3.6 grade point average and will likely be a sophomore academically when he enters college. By the time he arrives on campus, he will have finished nine Advanced Placement courses.

His college list includes some of the top academic institutions in the nation: North Carolina, Duke, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Kansas, UCLA, Stanford, Florida, Minnesota, Iowa and Iowa State.

Not true!! May end up that way, but for now he says this..........

Harrison Barnes, Rivals.com’s No. 2-rated player in the recruiting class of 2010, will not be competing in any of the three tournaments in Las Vegas this week.

The 6-foot-6, 205-pound forward from Ames (Iowa) High, tells Rivals.com he plans on resting before competing in next month’s Global Games in Portland and Elite 24 Classic in New York.

Barnes has a list of KU, Duke, Florida, Iowa State, Kentucky, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Stanford and UCLA. He will trim his list to five after August. He plans on making all five official visits.

Harrison Barnes' story is a real page-turner

But while fans in this state would love to believe this has become a two-program race (Duke and North Carolina), Kansas is also considered a favorite. Florida and Kentucky are in the picture as well. So, too, are Minnesota, Stanford, UCLA and Texas Christian.
