Since airlines are charging for extra bags to cut down on weight should they have a sliding scale for fares so that the heavier the passenger the more they pay?

Mods, Please move this to the travel forum...thanks. TLW

Southwest makes you buy an extra seat if you are a 'customer of size'. I think this is the best way to handle customers that are morbidly obese. In most cases it neutralizes weight by leaving a seat empty. In other words, they count on the guy buying two seats to weigh twice as much as the airlines 'base' passenger model. A sliding scale would never happen on a per customer basis anyway. It would be considered discrimination and the last thing the airlines need is the ACLU crawling up their ***. Would it be fair to charge you $300 for a seat because you are 250lbs, while I pay $250 because I am 200lbs? All that would serve to do is force people to not fly, which is something the airlines don't need either. Fat people don't need to be reminded they are fat.

By the way, some airlines are charging you for your FIRST bag ($15). The second one is $25. I thought things were out of hand when they started charging for snacks and drinks, but now they are really grabbing at straws trying to make ends meet. Probably time to downsize and help research alternative fuels.

I would be OK with that. Let people pay their way, and pay a sum that reflects their cost to the airline.

I'd pay more than many . . . but less than many, too.

As for Southwest making fat people pay for a second seat: I don't know that this was just about fuel costs. Some of those people actually take up more than one seat, so it is fair for them to pay for that second seat instead of spilling into the seat of a passenger who paid just as much for a seat but only got part of it.

I'd hate it, because I'm one who would be charged extra, but it would be the most fair way to go about this IMO. Maybe they can charge by the COMBINED weight of the passenger and his/her luggage? That would motivate me to lose weight AND to pack light! lol

It was never about fuel, it's always been about neutralizing extra weight that is added to the plane and allowing other people to be comfortable. I've been on several flights where I got stuck next to someone that was ... huge. Been down that road, wish more airlines would institute the same rule. With the number of obese people in the country, they'd make some fat cash, pun intended.
