Hey, I haven't asked this question in over a month ...

I hope not. We need 4 down linemen minimum. We need to put a stop to our porus run defense to compete in the SEC year in and out.

Spring ball is around the corner and that is one of things I want to see what he does with.

That scheme hasn't served UK well recently but I don't see why some situational use of it should be ruled out.

No problems with that if it is used in situations and it is smart to do so. The heart of our defensive plan needs to have 4 down lineman. More importantly we need BIG bodies (SEC types) down there. We're getting there. I just hope we can stay healthy enough to put our best lineman in the trenches for most of the upcoming season.

We really need about 4 or 5 moreLB's of Michah's caliber to run it as a base D.

As bad as we've been against the run I can't see it happening.

Yeah, Brooks and Archer have both blamed our poor showing with the 3 - 4 on the fact that we didn't have the right kind or enough linebackers. That situation has improvedsubstantially since then. I'll be surprised if we DON'T see some 3 - 4 this season even though our base witll be 4 - 3. I just want to see some pressure on the QB's we face so that they can't take 7 and 8 seconds to look for a receiver and I'd also like to see some big strong taibacks brought down at the line of scrimmage---theirs, not ours.

Archer'scalling has always been the3/4. I find it hard to believe that he will not return to it. I think you guys are right about it being used in situations. The move will probably be gradual based on our efforts in those situations. I feel we will once again be in a 3/4 before next season.

Perhaps it's because I'm old school, but I prefer the 4-3. It's worked quite well for lots of teams in the past, so I don't see why it can't work for us if we have the right personnel to run it.

I really don't think it makes that much difference. A good football team can put anything from a goalline to a dime package in the game. No matter how they line up, they still have assignments.

It's arguing over semantics more than actual strategy.

I see UK relying on more reads this year with the added experience.

Uh.. no. Its not cut dry as you make it. "They still have assignments".. well, yes and no. Its more true on the HS level than college. If you have the wrong defensive package in the game at the time, than the 'assignment' for particular players can be missed, not because its their fault but because their position on the field is taking them out of the play. A GREAT football team can look horrendous with the wrong defense.

I didn't mean to say that the defensive scheme should not fit the situation.
