Baseline and 3 seconds in the lane

I remember when I was in high school my coach told me that if a player runs out of the paint and into the baseline, he is still be counted for a 3 second violation as if he were still standing in the paint. Is this true, just true for high school, or totally made up? I find it hard to believe.

Your coach was correct. In HS or College, a player cannot step directly across the baseline, from the lane, and stop the 3 second count.
