Sports at 12 indicated that UK had freed up a scholarship by releasing Coury. I had always understood Coury was not a scholarship player. How was a scholarship freed? Did BG free the scholarship to bring in somebody else for 2008? Anybody have a clue?

I am not certain but I believe he was given a scholarship for last season? Good grades and effort I believe were the reasons?

Wow, ugly reporting.

Coury was not on scholarship, has not been released (obviously), and it's not even certain that he'll be transferring.

Also, we don't need to free anything to bring somebody in for '08. We're well under the scholly limit right now.

Edited. I think I was right the first time.

I always heard he was on academic scholarship for carrying a 4.0 GPA

Has been released whatever that means. Those were BG's words. He will be welcomed back but not on scholarship.

Is there a link with that quote? Unless I completely missed something, Coury wasn't on scholarship.

I took Gillispie's comments to mean that he was looking for a team that would give him a scholarship. I heard nothing about a release. (I admit I only read clips and snippets of the presser, though.)

Well you can go to WKYT.com and listen to Billy. There are some interesting comments but not about Coury. The news guy says, in this case, that BG said he was released. Released from what I don't know, but it seems you wouldn't have to release a walk-on. The tone of it seems to indicate that he does not have scholarship, i.e., he has been released to go somewhere he MAY GET a scholarhship. I think the news today at 12 was WLEX and Billy said "released" but I didn't get it all. They are the ones who said that a scholarship was freed up but that was not necessarily in connection with Coury. Again, I didn't get it all. I'll try to watch at 11 and see if they repeat. You might want to check out WKYT and see how you interpret those comments on Liggins and Galloway. "Expected to play."

He was given a scholarship that didn't get used I seem to remember vaguely.

Not much at 11. Just a lot of talk about a tough schedule and Meeks playing point. Doesn't sound too good to me.

Found this, so I guess it's poor reporting, but why does Coury need to be "released".

Is Mark Coury coming back to play?
"At the end of the year, he asked if he could -- he wasn't on scholarship -- and he asked if I would mind if he got a release to five or six different schools so that he could seek a scholarship and I said, ‘Absolutely.' The way I look at it, I want Mark back, and he hasn't decided if he's going to come back. He was an important part of our team last year, but if I can't give him a scholarship, or if I choose not to give him a scholarship, and he can get a scholarship somewhere else to pay for his school, I understand that totally. He's in the midst of talking to some people."

Just for the first semester. Second semester he was a walk-on.

I think the term "release" is just a general term here that doesn't have to do with scholarships.

Anyway, good luck to Mark whatever he decides to do.

Coury is not on scholarship so there is no scholarship to "free" up.

He has asked to search for a school that will offer him a scholarship and Coach told him to do so.

There will be no formal announcement about him leaving because he is not a scholarship player and the University does not call a press conference for walk-ons when they leave. He can not be "released" from a team that is a voluntary position, he would simply leave.

He is not on Academic Scholarship or he would stay and play.

MJ stated that his "sources" told him that Coury had been gone for the past couple of months and has not been playing with the team in pick up games. Also, he was seeking to play elsewhere. If he can not find any suiters, then he may likely return.

somebody 'splain something to me.

I've heard time and time again that coury asked for his "release", and he has been granted his "release".

What is the "release"? What does it accomplish? He wasn't going to have a scholarship this year. I don't think a release will allow him to transfer without sitting out a year.

So what is the "release" for?

I believe the two posts, just prior to yours, pretty well sums it up.

Actually, they don't. I'm looking for some sort of "official" answer. (Like an NCAA rule book reference or something) Not a guess. That's why I brought up the question for anyone who may actually understand.

Well, it's a pretty educated guess because of what Gillispie said last week.

Gillispie's own words in the press conference: "He wasn't on scholarship."

So the "release" has to be just a general term, ie a release from the team itself.

OK, so it's like me giving my wife a "release" to go get her hair done. It has no bearing on the course of action she will take.

Yes. Except in the Coury/Gillspie deal, there'll be no "Do you like it? You don't like it, do you? I knew you wouldn't like it. Well why are you looking at me like that? I don't know, that way you look. That thing you do with your face. That means you don't like it. I know you don't like it. Don't lie to me. Really? You're not just saying that? You promise? Swear to me. Swear to God on your riding mower that you like my hair" sort of thing.

At least I hope not.
