Wouldn't it be neat if a b-ball player gave football a try (Wasn't Anthony Epps gonna walk on?). With Ravi's brother already on the squad, how about Ravi giving it a try? Could someone from Hoptown comment on whether Ravi even played football? And where could you see Ravi or any other basketball player making a contribution to the football Cats.

Ahh, bring back Chuck Hayes. There used to be a lot of speculation/wishing about Chuck playing fb. He just wasn't interested I guess. One problem with a bb player playing fb, if they are on athletic scholarship they count against the fb player limit. That wouldn't be problem for a Ravi as he was not on athletic scholarship but it would have been for Hayes.
As for position, I remember Dallas drafted several former bb players and tried them at defensive back. One, can't remember the name, had a very successful NFL career. This was twenty years or so ago.

What kind of DB would Rondo make with his speed, leaping ability, etc!! I bet he'd be even better than he is at basketball. We think of 6'0" guards as small in b'ball but that's a good size for a football DB with his mobility. UK has had several basketball players that would have done even better in the NFL if they'd wanted football.
There was a time when basketball didn't require muscled strength as it does today---and the temperament of a b'ball and f'ball player might havebeen very different. But the basketball game has gotten so rough and tough that there's not much difference in the brute force mentality between the two games anymore.

Problem is Rondo would complain about not getting a shot at the starting QB job.;)

Very few players can pull it off. At UL Greg Tinch tried it for one season than decided to go strictly with football. Word had it, Greg was unable to meet RP’s “off season regiment” and RP strongly encouraged him to play football.
Personally, I believe Tinch could have offered a lot to the last three UL basketball squads, specifically “toughness”, as evidenced by his willingness to go across the field.

I mentioned Epps and Moss in context to players who have FINISHED their basketball career and then might want to try contributing to the football program. I wouldn't expect a basketball coach to endorse one of his players playing a football season then showing up after Thanksgiving possibly all beat up. Not to mention (okay I will mention it) scholarship ramifications involved.

I think it is only in the first two years that basketball players who play football count against football scholarships.

Might be but I've not seen that in the rules. I know a former walk-on can be given a scholarship as two years "in the program" and not count against the incoming scholarship limit.

It's the SEC's Bear Bryant rule. Back in the day the Bear used to oversign guys and put them on basketball, track, baseball (you name it) scholarshipscausing the SEC to institute a rule that if you sign with one of the 'minor' sports, you are ineligible to 'walk on' with the football team for your first two years. Football scholarship players can play any other sport their first two yearsbut not vice versa.

I saw coach Brooks being interviewed on LEX18 earlier this evening and he said he would have loved to have had Chuck playing te.
