View Full Version : Question David Jones...

Is it a possibility that he sees time on both offense and defense. IIRC he is listed as a CB, but will be fighting for a starting spot. Now we have some experience issues with the WR's and I know he played that spot his FR & SO years then moved to CB to get playing time.
Is it at all feasable that he could move back to WR and still get PT at the CB?

Although possible, it could be a practice issue and could hurt his performance at both spots.
Probably not as Jones is likely to win the starting job opposite Lindley.
Regarding our WR woes.
Two years ago folks were wringing their hands over the WR position. Keenan Burton was our only experienced WR and he was of-injured. We had a Juco coming in and some young guys named Dicky Lyons and Demoreo Ford that we were counting on contributing. Here's our 2006 spring depth chart at that position. The walkons are in green.
SE
19 Keenan Burton 6-2 195 Jr.
6 John Logan 6-0 189 Jr.
12 Dicky Lyons 5-11 190 So.
11 Jo Jo Brown 6-3 200 So.
8 Demoreo Ford 5-10 189 RSFr.
89 Sean Murphy 6-4 195 Jr.
21 Ravi Moss 6-2 195 Sr.
34 Kenny Hawkins 5-9 173 RSFr.
83 Anthony Stewart 5-10 173 So.
85 Anthony Cecil 6-0 187 RSFr.
88 Brian Bishop 6-1 200 So.
36 Chris Olinger 6-3 216 Jr.
We were so desperate for help that we had converted Jo Jo Brown and David Jones to WR that fall and used our backup QB Curtis Pulley there as well.
Now we enter this fall with "the most talented group we've ever had there" (Rich and Joker's words). I suspect we will be just fine when the dust settles. I suspect we will be more than just fine actually.
Here's who we have now:
WR
12 Dicky Lyons 5-11 190 RSSr.
8 Demoreo Ford 5-10 190 RSJr.
17 EJ Adams 6-0 190 Jr.
81 Kyrus Lanxter 6-3 185 So.
26 Terrence Jones 6-2 195 RSSo.
14 Anthony Mosley 6-0 180 RSFr.
Aaron Boyd 6-4 210 Fr.
Randall Cobb 5-11 180 Fr.
Eric Adeyemi 6-0 170 Fr.
E J Fields 6-2 190 Fr.
Gene McCaskill 6-0 180 Fr.
These are all scholarship guys - not walkons. There is also the distinct possibility of some snaps there by Pulley again and we may actually utilize 2WR sets more often. Remains to be seen.
Until then ...
Don't worry - be happy.

I LOVE the optimism, RV. Too, I well remember how most of us had been worrying about the wide receiver position two years ago, but YOU had not been worried and were, thankfully, RIGHT that there had been no reason to worry.
Also, you are so right about how Coach Brooks has called this incoming group of wide receivers "the most talented" group they have had. YET, Coach Brooks does list the position as the one of his greatest concern right now (well, before the recent development:icon_frown:). The concern, I think, is the return of good health for DeMoreo (and now Lanxter) AND the length of time it takes the freshmen to learn the system and develop.
For me, I smiled at that last line of your post. I'm pretty good about being happy and smiling most of the time, BUT, as you know, I let that "worry" slip in more often than I should. I confess that I'm worried about the position for the Louisville game. We'll see. I hope YOU are right again! :icon_biggrin:

Thanks for the run down RV. I think I'm just getting caught up in hearing so many people say we have no/little experience at WR and add that to the QB stuff and it seems magnified maybe.
But really looking at the players we have in the position, we (I) should be a bit more optomistic about it. All of those guys while a bit green as a group do come packing with talent. And now that I look at it I really like the size of Lanxter and Boyd. Hopefully we can get healthy as well, that should make a difference.
Hopefully these guys can carry the torch of the last season or two. They just need to be aggressive and show they want to get more time on the field.
And as far as optimisim...I have it. This is going to be an awesome football season, and it is almost here thankfully. I think we will be a solid team that plays more in your face football, with our tough D and bevey of talented RB's.

...and those new receivers. Their speed and talents are gonna burn bright, just gotta let them get some time behind them. The receiver spots are going to create excellent competition for the jobs available, and we're gonna love watching the rockets these kids have! They just need a little time...
I expect Randall Cobb to be a special player BTW. I just got a feelin'..

What I read now:
12 Dicky Lyons 5-11 190 RSSr. - check
8 Demoreo Ford 5-10 190 RSJr. - still hurtin, RS?
17 EJ Adams 6-0 190 Jr. - new to position
81 Kyrus Lanxter 6-3 185 So. - hurt but cast off soon, been working with team
26 Terrence Jones 6-2 195 RSSo. - being passed by true FRs
14 Anthony Mosley 6-0 180 RSFr. - same as TJ
Aaron Boyd 6-4 210 Fr. - sick for a good while longer
Randall Cobb 5-11 180 Fr. - more at QB
Eric Adeyemi 6-0 170 Fr. - lookin good
E J Fields 6-2 190 Fr. -lookin good
Gene McCaskill 6-0 180 Fr. - lookin good
Matt Roark - lookin real good
8 Demoreo Ford 5-10 190 RSJr. - still hurtin, RS? Can't RS but is doing individual work in practice
17 EJ Adams 6-0 190 Jr. - new to position Has impressed as he did early in the spring
81 Kyrus Lanxter 6-3 185 So. - hurt but cast off soon, been working with team Has been running routes as if he weren't hurt - just can't catch many of the passes thrown to him.
26 Terrence Jones 6-2 195 RSSo. - being passed by true FRs May never be what was expected due to injury problems.
12 Dicky Lyons 5-11 190 RSSr.
8 Demoreo Ford 5-10 190 RSJr. ?
17 EJ Adams 6-0 190 Jr.
81 Kyrus Lanxter 6-3 185 So.
3 Matt Roark 6-6 195 Fr.
13 Eric Adeyemi 6-0 170 Fr.
83 E J Fields 6-2 190 Fr.
85 Gene McCaskill 6-0 180 Fr.
26 Terrence Jones 6-2 195 RSSo.
14 Anthony Mosley 6-0 180 RSFr.
18 Randall Cobb 5-11 180 Fr.
We usually only have 6 in our WR rotation on gameday. We still have plenty of talent available.

I doubt it now considering Warford's situation.

Its seems to me that if there was one position on a team that is more forgiving with a lack of experience it would be the WR spot.
Is that a safe assumption on my part, that talent and speed can cover up inexperience for a young WR?

A willingness to be physical is a very important ingredient. Speed is good but the ability to run good routes and catch the ball when it's thrown to you will get you on the field. In our offense, a penchant for blocking will keep you on the field.

Too, I read today that true freshman Matt Roark is impressing the coaches with his physicality and blocking (and that reminded me of DeMoreo, of course).

How is Adeyemi looking?
I. Melvin, the coaches have been praising him, although they are a bit concerned about his thin frame. He is REALLY fast. :) His name has come shortly behind Gene McCaskill (while Matt Roark and currenting ailing E.J. Field have received the most compliments so far).
The coaches seem high on all of these true freshman receivers. As RV says, it may take a little time, BUT in time we should be MOST pleased with our wide receivers. :)
