Day One: stayed in downtown Minneapolis and went to the Twins/Yankees game at the Metrodome; drank way too much beer at a local bar called "Hubert's", and tasted their local ballpark cuisine: deep-fried cheese curds, and later, pan-seared walleye with sauteed potato. Yum

Night One: Put my traveling canine companion in a local kennel and crashed at a hotel. Had a minor scare when I ran into what I thought was an old girlfriend in the hotel lounge. Thankfully, it wasn't her, 'cause with the buzz I had from all the ballpark brews, who knows where that would've went.

Day Two: Drove to Duluth, a stunning town on the shores of Lake Superior. The city is laid-out north-to-south along the shore, narrowed by the topography. The western border of the city consists of high bluffs overlooking downtown below and reminds me of a Great Lakes version of San Francisco. Man, I'd hate to have been a 16-year-old learning to drive on these steep hills. lol

Night Two: planned on camping far up the North Shore, but had a change of plans, mainly because I forgot to pack a damn jacket and any raingear (85 degrees and sunny when I left Lex) and had to double-back into Duluth, which threw my entire time-horizon off (my obligatory nod to Dubya). Instead, I made a dash towards the Iron Range further inland, where I stumbled upon a few very interesting towns that I plan on exploring tomorrow. Completely by accident, I found the Paul Wellstone Memorial near Eveleth, a half-mile or so from the site of his fatal plane crash. I also came across the US Hockey Hall of Fame, and hippie icon Bob Dylan lives in nearby Hibbins. It's amazing what you come across when you make up your trip as you go, with no definite itinerary.

More to come next week, as I'm now fully-equipped for camping and won't stay in another wi-fi hotel until probably next Sunday or so.

Worked with a lady who grew up in the Iron Range. Her dad mined ore. Said that while it's beautiful, once the ore was gone, there was no work & her family struggled. Sounds like coal in SE KY.
