Ty Proffitt to transfer (http://www.courier-journal.com/blogs/demling/labels/Ty%20Proffitt.html)

Former South Laurel High School All-Stare guard Ty Proffitt has received his release from Notre Dame and will transfer to another college within the next few days.
Glenn Proffitt, the father of the 6-foot-4 guard, wouldn't confirm what schools had been in contact. But several reports have the player making visits Kentucky and Morehead State today and also looking at Western Kentucky, Tennessee Tech and Duquesne.
"We really don't want to say until we get close to picking a school," Glenn Proffitt said of potential destinations. "But if the right thing happened, Ty would like to be as close to home as he could."
Proffitt, who went through summer school and a trip to Ireland with the Notre Dame team, made a last-minute decision this week to leave the Fighting Irish. He must enroll at another school before the 12th day of class so that he can preserve a half-year of eligibility.
"It just happened but there's quite a bit of interest," Glenn Proffitt said. "We're going to go and see some schools, call some schools and try to find out who has the need for someone like Ty and a place where he can be happy

Ty Proffitt Looks Kentuckyward (http://blog.kentuckysportsradio.com/?p=7202)
by Evan Hilbert @ KSR
Ex-South Laurel standout Ty Proffitt is transferring after his freshman season at ND, and he is looking at both Morehead State and UK today, Brett Dawson reports (http://www.courier-journal.com/blogs/dawson/2008/08/proffitt-to-visit-uk.html#comments).
Proffitt, who helped lead South Laurel to the state championship as a sophomore, cites his lack of playing time at the point guard spot as reason for his departure. He averaged only a single point last season, mostly backing up Kyle McAlarney, Tory Jackson, and Jonathan Peoples.
A related factoid: his name reminds me of a news anchor.

Unless he's improved a lot from when I saw him, he isn't UK material.
Steady player. Doesn't make too many mistakes. Probably low- or mid-major talent.

I say if he wants to walk on or can get a academic ride then let him. I wouldn't mind our walk ons being all 2 stars that can only strengthen the team. Then if something happens when he has to come in you have someone that at least knows what a college game looks like and has some ability and skill even if it is defense and shooting. It can't hurt to have smart tough nosed kids on the team and who knows maybe he can turn into a surprise and he is a KY kid so that is never bad.

Agreed.
My take is basically a scholarship argument, which you would assume that's what this is. I don't know why a person who complains about playing time would come to a school and walk on.
Unless he's a really big UK fan or something.

Its between us, Duqsense, Morhead State, and Tennessee Tech? Wow what seems out of place in that list? How about College Basketball's all-time winnest program in a list with a bunch if lower-major D1 colleges lol

You are right but there really isn't an chance for him to get a schollie since Williams just took the last one so that really isn't an issue I wouldn't think. Really from his list that you mentioned WL looks like he is weighing his options does he want to play and get big minutes or does he go to a big school again and risk not playing or playing mop up. I guess we will see but really if you have a chance to get a kid like him without any work at all and without losing a schollie you have to do it in my opinion.

I live in Laurel Co. and am familiar with Ty. In my opinion, he is UK material. The bottom line, as I see it, is that with Liggins and Galloway on board there isn't a need for another point guard at UK at this time.

I've seen Proffitt multiple times. Seems like he sort of hit a peak with his ability midway through his high school career. I saw pretty much the same player as a senior than he was as a sophomore.
It was widely believed, from the high school coaches and people I know, that Notre Dame made a big mistake. I know for a fact that there was heated discussion about Ty making the Kentucky All-Star team after his senior year. (Most coaches there didn't think he should have made it, and there was a cussing match about whether or not Proffitt should be on the team just because he'd signed with Notre Dame. He eventually made the team, but must have literally been the last selection.) In the Derby Classic game last year in Louisville, I'm not sure if he scored a point or made an assist. Just overmatched.
Probably mid- or (more likely) low-major talent. However, if you've got a guy who wants to be a Wildcat, and he's a local kid, I think it'd be great to have him on board as a walk-on. No way in the world he gets a scholarship from UK, though.

This is exactly what I have heard. That he didn't improve (or maybe he just peaked) after his sophomore year. Not really sure this kid would fit in on this team. I don't see him really getting any playing time.

Former South Laurel High School point guard Ty Proffitt met with UK coaches on Thursday and discussed a possible transfer to Kentucky.
"It went well ...," Proffitt said in a telephone interview Thursday night. "We sat down and discussed the situation. There are a lot of places I want to go. I don't want to rush into anything."
"Luckily, I have pretty good parents always pushing me in school," he said. "If Kentucky is the school, I could get an academic scholarship."
When asked what role he might play at UK, Proffitt said, "It'd just be as a true point guard. Get the ball to people who need the ball. Have a good relationship with the guys."
Tipton again....but... (http://www.kentucky.com/232/story/506740.html)

What is the status on this kid? Has anyone heard what he is going to do?

According to Tipton, he is now attending classes at Morehead.
