IE 8 is not fully released yet but I have been testing the Beta 2 version. I have found it to be even slower than before and not worth the bother at all. It appears to have some better ways to block sites you want to keep you kids off of but IMO that is about the only improvement. For me, it will remain FireFox except when I must use IE.

OOPS, Just realized I posted in wrong forum. Sorry.

I've been testing it as well, so far I don't see anything interesting enough to make me want to upgrade, and yes, it is slower.

I've been using Mozilla Firefox. It's a different kind of browser, offering change and hope to the internet. Some will say that it's all fluff and offers no real solutions to the problems we face on the web, that it isn't ready to lead me to the internet, but time and time again, it's been proven to be the change we need.

But it's got such a funny name. :thumbdn:

It doesn't look like the previous browsers, either.

We all know that it was IE who defeated the evil Netscape.. Firefox is just a sympathizer to those competitors who always blame Bill Gates first! :p

Well this thread isn't nearly as funny now that it's in the correct thread.

I agree that IE 8 is not worth your time. They downloaded it(the beta version) for some reason at work and it has slowed our internet down to a crawl. Until MS fixes all the problems with it, it will not go on my home computer.

I have found IE 8 to be more secure that Firefox 3, but jesus, whoever designed the process elevation and memory allocation logic needs to be taken out back and strangled with a belt.

One reason it is so slow, is because EVERY time you open a tab, it starts ANOTHER memory hungry instance (process) of iexplore.exe. Why? Because it's apart of IE 8's crash recovery system. Frankly, I don't care for it and I don't give a flip if my browser crashes. The initial instance takes up roughly 95MB. You start with 1 tab open already (your initial page), which takes up about 35-40MB. So by default you have 2 processes open using 130MB. If you are on a work computer that probably doesn't have alot of memory (most have 1GB) to begin with, you'll notice this very quickly. What's worse, is that every following tab starts out around 25MB and opens another process. The more you open, the more the initial process balloons upward, while the additional tabs settle out around 55MB each. I typically browse with 7 to 8 tabs. Depending on what I am viewing and how much data is on the page, each tab can be upwards of 70MB. So, in a typical session I have 7 tabs open using 450MB of memory and 8 instances of iexplore running in my task manager. For anyone on a low end computer, that will put a hurt on you. I notice it too and I have 8GB of memory.

The other reason it is slow revolves around how it manages memory allocation. Every time you browse a page or click through, it will download the contents of the page first, elevate the process, allocate memory, THEN display the page. If they ever want it to be successful, they will need to listen to the 6000 complaints they have received over the issue (plus other bugs) and make the appropriate changes. At least they HAVE been listening thus far, not just with development of IE, but with other programs as well.

That's cause IE has decided that it doesn't care about memory, it just wants to dominate the market... even if it causes PC's to crash world wide. They think that PC users (approx 52% of the population) will be dissatisfied by Firefox's dis and will just automatically jump on board.. ;)

Just saw this on CNN about the "Porn Mode" for IE8. You can surf the web without being tracked in "private" mode.
