Where are thein-state recruits for next season? It seems the only kids that Tubby recruits from Kyarepractice dummies. I know this isn't always the case, but I would like to see him go after some top notch talent in this state. In my opinion, this is one of the very few faults that I find in Tubby.

Maybe they don't fit what the team's needs or better yet... LACK the talent in the positions they need to fulfil?? If there was a Brandan Wright in KY, he would be all over him.

It's hard for me to believe that there isn't a player in Kentucky that is as good or better than the Porter kid from Cali.

We'll have to see when he finally gets on the court.. but you can't be just average talent if football programs like USC (that's Southern California) are recruiting you.
Unfortunately, he injured himself before the summer camps which didn't allow him to be evaluated by the recruiting gurus (no stars on rivals.com) but Tubby apparently saw enough. I think KY HS kids are among the most skilled in the nation when it comes to basketball along with the coaches but the talent level is another matter. The number of 4 or 5 star talent players in KY are few ('05, ZERO; '06, 1 4-star; '07, ZERO)

The poster before me hit the nail on the head. Jared last year. Rajon the year before...

There arent the stars that there used to be... sadly to say...

So now we have faults on Tubby for NOT getting the INSTATE recruits.

Unreal.//

When he gets them. He gets bashed for not getting the top recruits

NOW, that he is getting (2004 and this year also) the top recruits someone complains about the instate...

We are the most fickle fans in the USA...nomake that the world... NO make that the galaxy.

I might hesitate to refer to Rajon Rondo, Patrick Sparks, and Ravi Moss as "practice dummies."

There are exceptions. Don't get me wrong I love Tubby. I would just like to see us with more Ky boys on the team because they understand what a privilege and honor it is to play for UK (Crawford & Morris incident).

I really find it hard to believe that there isn'tONE KY high school player in the top 150. Those polls are crap in my opinion.

They are subjective yes. Accurate yes, also subjective.

But I wouldnt have anyone in Ky in the top 100 for sure. 150... possibly.

Um, I think they understand that priviledge know, don't you?

These kids both came back, and if they didn't want to become better men, athletes, students, and of course look better for the pro scouts, then they wouldn't have bothered.

so what your saying is you'd take a carrier or stockton on scholly over a more talented kid because they know what wearing the blue & white means???? tubby tried this with, ohh what was the name......oh yea STOCKTON & CARRIER. it didn't work out that well imo.

Why Stockton was recruited I have never been real clear on. He is a decent player but his height is such a detriment to him being effective...

Carrier, on the other hand, was recruited because he was such a dead-eye shooter in high school. For whatever reason that did not translate into the college game but that is hardly Tubby's fault. He is a coach's son and yes, understands what it means to play for KENTUCKY. Tubby was also being pressured to get some of these in state recruits at the time and I am sure that had something to do with it.

Hind site, as they say, is 20/20. So would Sparks have been a better addition to the team than Carrier? Probably... or would he not have gotten the chance to develop like he did bygetting all that playing timeat Western for those two years? Hard to know...

To rephrase what Joneslab said above,I seriously doubt ANYONE would refer to Rondo or Moss as practice dummies.

I was living in Western Kentucky when Sparks, Stockton and Carrier were all in high school. From my limited, sort of anectdotal perspective, Sparks and Stockton got the most praise, while Carrier, even though he was Mr. Basketball, I didn't hear too much about. Sparks was legendary, of course, but I also knew a few people who went to see Brandon play and were just flat-out bowled over by how good he was. Next time you go to a game, pick up a program and take a look at Brandon's stats. His high school numbers are as impressive and gaudy as anyone's we have. And remember, Stockton played fairly well for us as a sophomore. I remember the Michigan State game in Rupp when he came in and gave us great minutes; also the Louisville game two years ago when he outplayed Cliff Hawkins and kept us in the game at one point. Stockton was said to have tremendous, explosive quickness in high school. Seems to me that he's gained a lot of weight at UK. Probably a byproduct of being recruited over.

As for Carrier: I never thought he had the fire to play basketball at this level. Seemed to not have the emotional toughness to want to just get out there and match his guy shot for shot. Sparks has that competitive edge, and I think that's what separates them. (Among other things: Patrick's ability to playmake, for instance.)

Not to drag this topic TOO far off of topic but I think that Carrier's problem was always that he tried too darn hard when he was in the game. Heck, his best game at UK (production wise anyway) was his senior day when he knew there was nothing to prove. It seems like he couldn't relax and let the shots flow when he was in a real game situation.Everyone heard the practice reports about how deadly he was from long range and many of us saw him fill it up during warm-ups before a game... it just never showed up when it really counted.

As for Stockton: I never really knew much about him, I just know that when you are relatively short (speaking from personal experience here) you have to be EXCEPTIONAL to have a chance among much taller players. It is so difficult for him to get off an open shot because everyone is always towering over him. It also makes it difficult for him to defend against someone who has 4-5 inches on him.
He has had a few good games and I don't mind him shooting it when he gets an open look because it seems like he hits a decent percentage. However, I also seem to remember some instances when he would be bringing the ball up the court and dribble it off his foot and out of bounds with little or no pressure from his defender. Or his man would just shoot over him and there was nothing Brandon could do.

Don't get me wrong, I love the kid to death. He probably COULD be starting at some other schools. He has offered multiple times to give up his scholly to help the team over all, even if it meant he was being recruited over. He REALLY understands what an amazing thing it is to play for Kentucky even if it means that you sit on the bench the entire game (heck, if nothing else he has the best seat in the house!). Maybe that is one of the reasons he was recruited - the pride and understanding he has for the blue and white.
