Flowing locks. Tights. Well, yeah, Thor kinda could pass for a Renaissance man…

If comic-book fans squinted real hard, today's news that actor-filmmaker Kenneth Branagh was in talks to direct Marvel's upcoming Thor movie looked not so bad. And pretty good even.

"I think it's kinda cool," said Rob M. Worley, editor of Comics2Film. "[But] he's not anybody I would have thought of."

Branagh, 47, is better known for interpreting William Shakespeare, on stage and in the movies (Henry V, Hamlet, etc.), than Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the two comics giants who made a Marvel star of the ancient Norse god in the 1960s.

"It's definitely a stretch for Branagh, and for Marvel—more in the vein of getting Ang Lee to direct Hulk," Heidi MacDonald, who writes about the comics world on the Publishers Weekly blog The Beat, said in an email.

Thor is one my favorites. Can't wait to see the movie.

Okay, so who is going to be Thor? Fabio and Hulk Hogan are too old and can't act worth a darn.

I am such a HUGE comic book fan. I worked at a comic book store for the longest time. Thor is great, but it will be tough to be better than Iron Man or Dark Knight. Whomever picks up the hammer, they have their work cut out for them.
I'm a DC man, myself, so I am actually more excited about a Green Lantern movie coming out more than Thor.

Green Latern could be a very cool movie as well. Guess I need to increase my movie going budget.

I liked the Thor comic books, especially those drawn by Jack Kirby in the 60s. I absolutely HATED the way Thor was depicted in the made for TV movie which came out several years ago. (1990?) As for Green Lantern, I'd rather see Hal Jordan than John Stewart. That's just because I grew up reading Hal Jordan as Green Lantern.

Huge Thor fan here, but this scares me....it has disaster written all over it. Favreau was the perfect fit for Iron Man as he wanted to stay true to the comics. Bringing in someone who wants a LOTR feel to it will ruin it, IMO.

Hulk, Iron Man, Captain America and Thor are all supposed to tie into the Avengers movie, dont see how they can do that if any of the 4 are on a totally different page. This one could be a hit if done right and getting a guy with these credentials could go the way of the Ang Lee/Hulk debacle.

While we're on the topic of superhero comic book movies, is anyone out there familar with Watchmen? Have you read the miniseries? Are you looking forward to the movie? I know I am.

I love Watchmen ,definitely deserves all the praise it gets. I'm excited and worried about the movie. I thought the trailer looked terrible, but I've heard that early reports are very positive.

I wonder if Marvel will ever get this Avengers movie together. They've failed at Hulk twice already, and Captain America and Thor will be hard to pull off in a live action movie. Iron Man is cool though. They should just stick to making more of those and forget the team-up idea, IMO.
