So my wife and I were heading home to Madisonville last night to hang out with the family for the weekend, and our car messed up. To make a long story short, we broke down about 20 minutes west of Lexington. Thank God that some people that we knew were heading to Beaver Dam and saw us and we basically had the car towed and rode with them and we are in Hopkins Co. now.
But we have been looking for a better car for a while now, and this looks like the kick that we need. The car that we have now is just getting old and has a lot of miles on it and we need something that will need less maintenance.
Our budget is about $4,000 and what we're ideally looking for is something in the Toyota Camry/Corolla, Honda Accord/Civic range.
I was looking on Yahoo Autos but I'm not really finding anything, and wanted to see if anyone around here knew of anyone selling their car privately in the Western Kentucky (Madisonville, Bowling Green, Owensboro, Henderson, even Clarksville, TN or Nashville) area.
Thanks!

Have you checked craigslist.org?

The Sunday paper always has loads of listings for cars so I would give that a check.

I limited the search to Toyota, Nissan, and Honda. A lot of them are out of your desired price range, but there are several that are within what you're looking for.
Hope that helps.

What's the age, make and mileage of your current vehicle? What was the nature of the breakdown?
Depending on these factors, it could very well simply be a $4,000 lateral move, judging by the vehicles available within your budget.
You may be able to save most of you $4,000 and make the necessary repairs to your current vehicle. Of course, reliability is certainly weighted differently depending on one's POV and circumstances. That said, unless your current vehicle is older than 8 years old, reliability will be a wash in making a lateral move.
We have a company truck that required an engine replacement two years ago, at 166k miles. It was 8 years old at the time. Our option was to offload it for whatever we could get for it and buy a used one for 8-10k. We opted for the engine replacement, as it was only 1/4 of the cost of purchasing a used one. The only other big ticket repair that could happen would be replacing the transmission. Even if that happens, we should still be able to get 4 more years out of it for less than half of what we would have spent on another used vehicle.

We found a slick, slick 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse for $4,500 but it doesn't look like it's going to work out. If anyone sees/has something like this, let me know.

Someone mentioned craigslist earlier but you might not have seen it. Go to craigslist.org, click your state and closest area to you. This is a great site.

Josh, I'll keep a look out for you. The Bowling Green paper usually has lots of cars listed, especially on Sundays. You can go online to bgdailynews and check the classified section. There are usually quite a few autos listed there.

Yeah that's where I found the Eclipse. I've been on there a lot lately.

Would you consider a Nissan Altima? 107,000 mi. (nothing for a Nissan) Not sure of the year, the car is white and looks very clean in Photos. A co-worker is selling it and I think she is asking $3900.00. If you are intrested let me know and I will get you more details. Oh, and you would have to come 30 miles east of Nashville, Tn. to get it.
If I could swing the extra cash I would have already snagged it!

Yeah I will consider anything. If you could find out some info for me and maybe some pics, that would be awesome.

I would jump on getting that Altima. We currently have a 92 Maxima with 240K miles on it that is still running.
Be careful on Craigslist. Make sure you do your pricing homework on edmunds, kbb.com and nadaguides.
If you tell yourself this mantra, it will save you some money--there are always cars available.
Hard to go wrong with a late model Honda or Toyota either.

Hey everyone. I'm still looking for something if anybody hears anything from a private seller in the W. Kentucky area. There have been a few cars we have looked at that have slipped away. Something will show up. Just remember me please. Primarily looking for a Honda, Toyota, or Nissan.
Thanks ... :)

Josh, click on this link. It's a site that is free to post items for sell or to buy. I saw a 2001 Nissan Quest for $5,000. There are many other vehicles listed, and you can email the seller.

I would stay away from a Toyota 6 cyl. They make a great 4 cyl, but have had a ton of problems with thier 6 cyl engines, from everything to blown heads to sludge campaigns.

We've found a car! It's in our possession now and we LOVE it. It's a '99 Camry!
In honor of that, mods, feel free to lock down this thread! I'm glad this is over and done with! :D
Thanks for everyone's help!
