Halloween is probably my favorite holiday because I love horror movies. What are some of your favorites?
Some of mine:
John Carpenter's (Kentucky native!) THE THING, although somewhat more sci-fi than horror, my personal favorite
The Omen
The Beyond
An American Werewolf in London
Rosemary's Baby
Night of the Living Dead & Dawn of the Dead

Mostly all the old classics.
Among my collection are:
Dracula (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0021814/) (1931) Adding to the eeriness the movie was purposely produced sans sound track.
Frankenstein (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0021884/) (1931)
Bride of Frankenstein (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0026138/)(1935)
Dracula Has Risen From The Grave (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062909/) (1968) Christopher Lee portrays a very creepy Dracula
The Exorcist (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070047/)(1973) I've got the Director's Cut. I suppose it's my catholic background, but this movie never ceases to creep the hell outta me.
Young Frankenstein (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072431/) (1974)
Arsenic and Old Lace (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0036613/)(1944) Dark humor, but one of my favorites. Priscilla Lane!
A Nightmare on Elm Street (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062909/)(1984)
Night of the Living Dead (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063350/)(1968) This one is seared into my brain as I recall seeing it at the drive-in and my dad was passed out in the front seat and my mom couldn't wake or move him so we could leave. :icon_lol:

I remember it too. I think I have shared the story here before but it came out during my Hippie era. I double dated with another couple. I had talked them into going to the Showcase Cinemas on Bardstown Road to see it. We all smoked up in the car very well before going in. That of course made things MUCH MORE intense. :) I remember seeing people leaving the show half way in and others with eyes wide or faces buried in the chest of their boyfriend who was also scared ****less. When if was finally over my friend I had doubled with cussed me out big time and said DON'T YOU EVER do that to me again. I am going to have nightmares for months now. :icon_mrgreen:
I love scary movies too. The more scary the better. Not much for the blood and guts stuff though and think they show more gross stuff than needed. To me, seeing a bad guy about to swing and axe and hear the sound of the recipient is just as effective IMO. :)
I think ALIENS, the sequel to ALIEN, has to rank right up there with the films that got me wired to the max. There was a whole lot of "edge of your seat moments" in that one. :)
Shaun of the Dead (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365748/) (2004) - Great movie. Instant classic.
The Ring (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0298130/) (2002) - This thing scared me to death.
The Lost Boys (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093437/) (1987) - Cheesy, but so many quotable lines.

The Amityville Horror always did it for me. The Ring is one of the better one's in recent years. My wife just purchased a DVD called The Haunting. It was made in 1963. She said she watched it when she was young and thought it was real scary. Anyone else seen this one? I think she saving it to watch at Halloween this year.

I'm with you on the blood and guts stuff. I enjoy it sometimes for what it is, but would MUCH prefer something actually scary.
And I consider Aliens to be one of the best sequels ever made, along with Godfather II and The Dark Knight. I hope that one day they will make a good Aliens movie again.

That's usually what happens when you beat a dead horse. Personally I thought they all sucked. I actually found them amusing, as I usually do with most hollywood produced 'horror' movies. There are a few that are pretty good, but they are pretty extreme movies.

The Ring (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0298130/) (2002) - This thing scared me to death.
A lot of hardcore horror fans hate this one, but I'm with you: it royally freaked me out.
I really liked Nicole Kidman in The Others, a movie that got swallowed up by The Sixth Sense but was the superior film, IMO. (Although I really liked TSS as well.)
I saw The Blair Witch Project when it first came out, and I thought it was hellaciously good.
The Descent was scary as poo.
Going back to the day, you can't get much more gritty than The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Tobe Hooper's original, which IMO hasn't been touched in terms of its cinema verite feel in over thirty years.
And of course the Stanley Kubrick version of Stephen King's The Shining, which King inexplicably hated but for my money remains one of the most disturbing movies ever made.
And it sounds cheesy to say, but Wes Craven's Nightmare on Elm Street is still a scary movie and doesn't feel outdated at all.
If reading is your thing, I recommend Ira Levin's Rosemary's Baby, which is the scariest book I've ever read.

I watched the Blair Witch Project at the old, crappy movie theater in Williamsburg when it came out and thought it was just outstanding.
The Ring was pretty scary as well - for a newer horror movie. The first half of The Descent was good. Then all the monsters kinda ruined it for me.

AGREE...."the others" and "the ring" as well..."the grudge" was pretty spooky....it's those movies that are just so dang creepy that stick with you when you're walking outside at night or alone in the house late at night or whatever....not so much the slasher flicks....don't like 'em....not into brutal and graphic mutilation of people as entertainment personally nor the satanic stuff....they inwardly trouble me....however halloween 2 is pretty good....another one is "when a stranger calls back"....kind of a cheesy sequel...but man it's got some pretty creepy scenes in it....the remake of "when a stranger calls" was pretty mediocre....some lesser knowns, "dragonfly" with kevin costner, "the village" by m. night shyamalan, "stir of echoes" was pretty spooky....the original pshycho was pretty spooky....it's old school, so not much blatant in your face killing....the old twilight zones were pretty creepy at times....there's one from the 90's called "dead again" with kenneth branagh that's a suspense/thriller type....a little bloodletting in that one, but it's a good creepy one....there's a show called "the haunting" with liam neeson that's pretty decent....it's a remake of a 60's movie i think....it's like most of those newer movies they get you hooked in for an hour and a 1/2 and then go completely south and stupid in the last 15 minutes....and then you're like "well, you had me and you lost me"....the original "house of wax" and "house on haunted hill" are pretty creepy, ole vincent price....

Bill Paxton's Frailty is an interesting horror movie.
It didn't jar me in a visceral way like some of the best horror movies I've seen have, but it does present a really interesting moral situation (What do we do when we're getting messages from God to kill people?) and place it in a pretty prototypical horror setting with solid results.

The Exorcist bothered me so much that I couldn't watch it all. The Omen and movies along that nature bother me as well. One movie that I didn't suspect would bother me but it did was the Silence of the Lambs. Anthony Hopkins and his character Dr. Hannibal Lecter caused the hair to stand up on my arms.

We live in an old, creepy house, on Elm Street, and there's nothing better than a scary movie in the dark around Halloween with nothing but the fireplace going.:thumbup: (IMO. My wife vehemently disagrees.)
My favorites have already been mentioned: The Ring, The Shining, The Amityville Horror. And I will fess up and say that I did enjoy the first Saw, just a bit. Not enough to bother watching the rest of them, though.
Another that's not been mentioned that I will guiltily admit to enjoying is The Butterfly Effect. That may not be classified "horror", or "scary" even, but the only two times I've seen it have been the past two halloween nights. There are some pretty creepy scenes in that one.

The Lane Theater in Williamsburg was originally owned by Mayor Lane back in the day. I'm pretty sure that it's closed now. One thing that made it creepy was the bats that lived there. I watched several movies there, including 'The Exorcist'. It scared the crap out of me.

I wasn't home the night that my old roommate saw Blair Witch, so he was sleeping in the apartment by himself, and already a little freaked out by the movie. About 2am, the electricity went out for a couple of minutes, and when it came back on it turned the stereo on in the living room and restarted the disc in the CD player, Beggars Banquet by the Stones. It was turned up pretty loud, and started off with Sympathy for the Devil. He said he laid in the fetal position till the whole disk played through, too scared to get up and turn off the stereo. I really wanted to pile up a bunch of rocks outside his bedroom after that.
I saw Burnt Offerings when I was a kid and couldn't sleep for a week.

The Blair Witch Project was great when it first came out, because alot of people werent sure if it was real or not. The best thing about it of course was the way it was shot, but also because most people can relate to being in the woods at night camping, then hearing a sound and going into instant freak out mode..."sshhh...what was that!?!"

Definitely think Blair Witch was one of the best, especially seeing it in the theaters. I wish I had been around when Exorcist came out, because it seems like seeing it in the theaters was much more intense. I never really got into it. I think it's good, but I guess it's just not my thing. I thought the first Saw movie was a joke, and I have not seen the others.
Halloween and scary movies are my thing though. When October comes around, I try and watch every scary movie I can find and I try to at least watch one every night of the month. MY favorites are as follows;
Halloween-The original and second one were and are the best scary movies I have ever seen. "The Shape" was portrayed so perfectly in both. Now, on the other hand, the new remake of last year was the only movie I have ever walked out on in the middle of it. Awful!
Killer Klowns from Outer Space-When I was little, this movie freaked me out so bad. Now, I just kinda laugh at it, but when you are a kid, things seem so much more real.
It-Tim Curry as Pennywise, was flawless. He is such a great actor. I guess by now you can tell I kinda had a thing against clowns for a while. That and possums were my two biggest fears growing up. :)
The Descent- One of the best RECENT scary movies I have seen in a while.
The Orphanage-If you don't mind subtitles, this one is a great one.
The Shining-Just rewatched this the other day, and I had forgotten how great Jack Nicholson is.
The Abandoned-This is one of the BEST scary movies from the last ten years. I was surprised it didn't get more publicity when it came out. It's a shame not many people know of it.
Event Horizon-More Sci-fi than horror, but was still pretty messed up.
Nightmare on Elm Street movies-These came out when I was a kid, and I could have sworn I saw Freddy outside my window one night. He messed with me for a while.
Friday the 13th movies-Jason with the burlap sack over his head in the second one is the best. I think that was always better than the hockey mask. Recently, this movie franchise has gotten a little ridiculous, but I am still excited about seeing the new one this year.
Well, I think that should be enough for now. I do love Young Frankenstein, and some of those other scary movies that are also funny, but these are the ones that give you chills.

I agree. It was pretty decent till the end.
A couple of others that have been recent that I didn't really care for was The Descent. I just thought those characters in the cave were goofy. I think just being lost in a cave would be scary enough.
Also An American Haunting wasn't that good. I was very disappointed in that one. I didn't like how they turned it around and made it into an incest story.

Love all of the Old Universal Horror flicks. The dead movies are fun also. I could go on and on. I picked up a movie this evening that I hadn't thought about in a long time.
