View Full Version : As upset as everyone (me included) is with the offense...

....special teams play broke our backtoday. Breakdowns in special teams resulted in a 17 point 1st half swing. The long kickoff return to put the ball inside the 20 (7 points), the chip shot FG block & return (10 points) resulted in a 17-14 UK lead when we could have had a 20-0 halftime lead. It's (special teams play) always a key in any game in that good to spectacular ST play can win you a game that you might not otherwise have one, but bad special teams play can sink you, just like today.......

I disagree. If it wasn"t for all the misses by thier fieldgoal kicker the score would had been a lot more than it was.
Why is it is so hardfor people to place blame on a QB that just don"t cut it.

No, Succop missing those kicks would have been South Carolina's problem. My point is that we had a 17 point swing because of poor special teams play. And I said in the post title that I was upset with the offense, but football is a team game, and special teams play today cost us in spades.

I disagree too. I say thats what happens when you try kicking a field goal on about the 3 or 4 yard line. This offense doesn't even look like it is designed to score. This is the worst offense I have seen at UK.

No one is saying the offense wasn't bad today, because that was obvious. What I'm telling you is that poor special teams play resulted in a 17 point swing in the first half. A 17 point swing in a 7 point ball game.....

I'll tell you the same thing I told another poster earlier today. Either you weren't around for them, or you don't remember the Curry years...

I have seen SEVERAL UK offenses with less talent than this one. Watching today I could close my eyes and believe we are back in the Curry years. It's time for the coaching staff to roll up it's sleeves and come up with some answers, right now all we have is questions. for what it's worth I think they will.

JD makes a very valid point. The offense did not lose this game for us. They didn't do much to help us win it, but it is much easier to point at the HUGE errors on special teams and say that without those, we win this game.
I think the offensive power in recent years has everyone expecting that sort of offensive performance all of the time. While I agree the offense isn't performing where is needs to perform, the strategy this year is clearly to let the D win games and have the offense not do anything to hurt our chance of winning. Just like last year our offense was responsible for winning the games while the D was responsible just to do enough not to cost us the game. The third factor here is special teams. Against SC our special teams performed the worst out of the three aspects which is amazing since they connected on a 51 yard field goal.

yes, it did. Huge, huge stat that summarizes the ballgame's outcome.
OTOH, it could have been a much worse beating if Succop doesn't miss 4 field goals.

Yes, but that would be South Carolina's problem.

Luckily their ST play was as bad as ours.

I guess we can agree to disagree. I kind of look at special teams as a by-product, "something produced as a result of something else." 3rd down conversions were 1 of 16. Yes, I do remember Bill Curry. I thought he was a legend in his own mind and I believe yesterday was worse than a reminder of the Curry years. Standing on a limb, I am also inclined to believe that even though we only lost by 3 at Alabama, the same play calling cost us the game, but thats another debate.
If Brooks doesn't make adjustments soon, his defense will lose desire and start breaking down. I can only imagine how they felt yesterday.
This team could easily be undefeated right now, very frustrating. But as always, I will continue to support the team as well as hoping Brooks makes some adjustments.

The def. need not get so high and mighty. The off. carried them the past two seasons.

Not last year, I think it was about even. Defense played good last year, not great, but good. They played similar to this year in the bowl game against Clemson.

I agree that the def. played ok, for the most part, last season but they didn't carry the team like many are expecting them to do this year.
Hoss - you are EXACTLY right and those that disagree are not so right.

Why is it is so hardfor people to place blame on a QB that just don"t cut it.I'm done with it, that's why. Bonner or JLo? JLo or Boyd? Even Pulley/Woodson. The most popular player on any team that loses a game, just one, is the backup QB. The history of the decisions to replace starters isn't good here. Bonner would have won more games than JLo his first year. Boyd played NFL QB for 3-4 years as a backup, but he feels like we were mean to him and were lucky to get Aaron. JLo shouldn't have a stat line like 19 TDs 22 Ints on his career sheet. The only reason Pulley/Woodson didn't go bad is because Pulley went academically ineligible and/or he lit a fire under Woodson.
If you can make the last thing happen, then I'm all for it. If anything like what happened before happens again, I blame the short attention spanned, impatient, ignorant fan.

I've only had time to read a small number of posts and have just read yours now, JDHoss. EXCELLENT point, in my opinion. In fact, at the end of the game Mr.Poodoo had made the comment that our offense is "anemic" right now. My response was that even with the offense's obvious struggles at this time, we WIN that game without that costly 17-point swing that was cause by the two special teams' mistakes.
By the way, we also missed a field goal. If we look ONLY at the special teams' mistakes for both teams, USC, even with its four missed field goals, comes out with an EIGHT-point advantage (and would have had a five-point advantage without even counting our missed field goal, as 17-12=5, as we all know).
Again, you are so right, JD. That 17-point swing killed us. We COULD have easily survived our struggling offense, even though one performing well would have won the game for us. It hurts. :icon_sad: GO CATS! BEAT THE HOGS!
