Banned? You should be praised.

GMU is now my hearthrob for the Final Four and on my list for where my son goes to college.

George Mason University has a profile that will sound familiar to those in the Jefferson County area:

- commuter school; only a small minority of students live on campus

- 20,000-30,000 students; prides itself on having a diverse student body

- all kinds of parking and traffic problems

- currently trying to raise money to build dorms and other things that will get kids to stay on campus

- bragging about how good they are in soccer and and track and that sort of thing

- has been part of the state university system for less than 50 years

- known for its athletics, not academics

Although a slave owner himself, Mason favored the abolition of slave trade (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slave_trade), and withheld his name from the U.S. Constitution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Constitution) in part because it failed to do so.

I thought that was pretty interesting.

The company I interned with in MD'96 also ran operations at the Patriot Center on GMU's campus. That fall, I worked 2 events there, the USA Olympic Gymnastics Team exhibition (thinkKerry Strugg) and a Soundgarden concert. Talk aboutyour different crowds.

Many others at the time felt the same way, including Thomas Jefferson.

Interesting story as I did not know who George Mason was either and on my way to Philly I stopped right outside of Morgantown,WV (Is it even big enough to be a town?) and as I was driving down the off ramp into the gas station, 2 cars drove by and started jersey popping GM shirts and I thought it was a HIGH SCHOOL!
