for now, because Turtleneck is too busy jerking around a blind handicapped band member, Patrick Henry Hughes. Does this man have a conscious? How can he sleep at night?

Wow. That is awful if it is true - that they threatened to ban his father from all athletic events and have the pep band play jingles at games. They're really going to sell the pep band out to Pep Boys or Thornton's or whoever to play TV commercial music? They expect those kids to play 80 to 100 events a year?
UL, to its detriment, has allowed athletics to take on a life of its own, without adequate institutional control. The campus has many more important needs.

You are only giving one side of the story. Believe me, PHH and his father are no angels.

They may not be angels but any man who would work a job, go to class with his son and go to band practice and functions with his son earns my respect as a parent.
UL has reached an all-time low in my eyes. Greed wins out, it's just that simple.

well, from what I understand, and one of the other UofL fans can correct me if I'm wrong, but here goes...
The Band is ran by the School of music. They would only show up to certain games (football, basketball). Jurich wanted a band who was going to be at EVERY game. He and the school band's director butted heads over this. So jurich decided to get his own band together. A "pep" band, that would actually show up to ALL the games. To do this, he recruited alumni and invited anyone who was in the school of music band to join. The School of music director told members of the band that if they joined Jurich's "pep band", they would have their scholarships pulled.
From what I understand, no one has told Patrick that he cannot play in the "pep band" other than his band director.
Also, PHH has a book that he has written. What better way to drum up publicity for his book than to accuse the Big Bad University of discrimnating against a blind and crippled boy?
PHH makes speaking engagements and from what I have read, he charges a pretty good amount of money to hear him speak. His Dad acts as his "agent" and the price for the speaking engagments are non-negotiable.
Anyway, I have a lot of respect for Patrick and all he has achieved being handicapped and all, but for him to try and take a dump on UofL, after all UofL has done for he and his family. Just kind of leaves a bitter taste.
If not for UofL, he'd never had gotten the publicity he has. He would have never gotten the house because he would never had been seen on national TV at the orange Bowl. And, he and his brothers would have had to pay their own way to college.
I know it's not PC to crticize a Handicapped person and makes me look heartless, but believe me, Patrick's dad knows this as well and he knows if you start telling people that someone is mistreating his son, then people are going to feel sorry for them and looking at the University as if they are the bad guy. The University gets a black eye no matter what.

In addition to this,my understanding is that the Athletics dept. took over responsibility of the pep band nearly two years ago because the School of Music didn't want it. This coincides with the time frame of the beginning of the Hughes's national publicity. I listened to an interview with the assistant AD and his explanation was that no one told PHH that he wasn't wanted. He was simply asked to notify the dept. of schedules for appearances and speaking engagements that ALL other members are required to do. The Hughes balked at this. WHY !!!!. Do they now think they are above the requirements of the other participants. I admire the Hughes for their incredible story but to bring this up TWO YEARS after the fact reeks of sensationalism for the sake of publicity.

You are exactly right. This went on a couple of years ago, and they are just now bringing it up? Funny how it comes out right at the time of the release of Patrick's book.
I've also heard that one of the stipulations for participating in the Home makeover show, that Patrick's dad made it clear that they were not to mention UofL or interview anyone from UofL. I also hear, and this is just a rumor, but that the Dad complained about some of the renovations that were made to the house. Can you imagine that? You are given a house that cost around $1 million, and you complain about it? The University of Louisville gives, not just Patrick, but ALL THREE SONS a free ride to college, and he( the dad) wants to run them through the mud?
From what I was told, PHH's dad is the orchestrater of most of this stuff.
