A Lexington company is making and selling vodka while it waits for its first batch of bourbon to mature.
Barrel House Distilling Company's Frank Marino hopes to have bourbon ready in four or five years.
Until then, Marino is pushing Pure Blue Vodka, a distilled beverage made with water from nearby Rockcastle County.
The Lexington Herald Leader reports the vodka is on course to land in liquor stores and restaurant bars early in 2009. Distribution elsewhere in Kentucky is planned later in 2009. The vodka should sell for about $20 per 750ml bottle.
Despite the name, which carries special resonance in basketball-crazy Lexington, the Barrel House partners insist it comes from the water used to make the vodka, not the Kentucky Wildcats.
