The "priest shortage" has led to priests from far flung locales being sent to the US. This story is an example of the often unreported good things that people do while coming together in a community church.

OAK GROVE, Ky. — The Rev. Chrispin Oneko, hanging up his vestments after leading one of his first Sunday Masses at his new American parish, was feeling content until he discovered several small notes left by his parishioners. The notes, all anonymous, conveyed the same message: Father, please make your homilies shorter. One said that even five minutes was too long for a mother with children.

At home in Kenya, Father Oneko had preached to rural Africans who walked for hours to get to church and would have been disappointed if the sermons were brief.

“Here the whole Mass is one hour,” he said, a broad smile on his round face. “That was a homework for me, to learn to summarize everything and make the homily 10 minutes, maybe 15. Here, people are on the move very fast.”

Father Oneko is part of a wave of Roman Catholic priests from Africa, Asia and Latin America who have been recruited to fill empty pulpits in parishes across America. They arrive knowing how to celebrate Mass, anoint the sick and baptize babies. But few are prepared for the challenges of being a pastor in America.

Thanks for the link. Fr. Crispin is now in Hawesville and is my pastor now. His sermons are still 20 minutes long and Mass lasts an hour and 15, So he hasn't cut back very much. :)

That article is very interesting, but doesn't tell of more recent events in his family's life. I believe it was last Feburary when his younger brother was killed in his homeland while trying to save his parents who were locked in their burning home. Also. this past August, He lost his youngest brother to sudden illness. This happened just before Fr Crispin was to leave for a long awaited vacation and trip back to his home.

Thanks for the added insight on the story.

Great story.

AS for the complaints on the length of the homily, Fr. Crispin should recommend those folks gain some perspective. Big deal if Mass is 10-15 minutes over an hour.
Those folks should be fortunate they don't have a Passionist priest.

We had one visit last summer. He had a very outgoing, gregarious, positive personality. His homily was vibrant, enthusiastic - and long. He forwarned us that he had no set time frame for his homilies and that the duration was driven by when he felt he had made the points he wanted to make.
Our Mass (approx. 200 in attendance) lasted nearly 90 minutes. Surprisingly, it didn't seem nearly that long because he was an exceptionally engaging speaker.
