Why didn't Holtz use that last time out?

Sorry if this was discussed elsewhere...but why did he not use that last time out? He kept looking at the clock. Its like he gave up with 2:00 left.

Did I miss something?

I was wondering that myself. Did the guy just figure it was pointless to try or what?

My gosh, I've seen coaches use their remaining timeouts with less than 2 minutes left and their team trailing by 3 touchdowns.

He was waiting until the right time to use it. Stopping the clock while we were moving the ball would have been a waste. I think they were hoping for a turnover and they would still have it to use. Even looking back there really wasn't a time he could have taken it that would have made a difference. I think he was wise to save it in case a miracle happened. Had he taken it, it would have been just for the sake of using it.

I think he was saving it in case UK didn't make that last 1st down. Once UK made it, game over. He could have called timeout, but all UK had to do was take a knee.

That's what I thought. He was waiting to see how much time was left if they had stopped us on 3rd down. When we made the 1st down, GAME OVER!!!

I think that is right: he hoped his defense could stop UK or force a turnover, then he would have the TO in the mix with spikes, incomplete passes and out of bounds plays to stop the clock repeatedly. It is easy to second guess. In the end it did not make a difference as Tony Dixon would not be denied on that last possession.

I'm sure he had something in mind. It just seemed he could have used it if only to stop guys like us from second guessing his decision not to use it. They don't carry over to next season so I think he wasted one.

Sometimes, if you're beat, it makes no sense to call a timeout. He was beat.

I dunno. I sure didn't see Oprah** out there warming up her vocal cords quite yet.

** feel free to substitute here, Ann Wilson from Heart, Momma Cass, Ashley Judds sister or any other "fat lady" that comes to mind.

I don't think he thought the game was lost. If he was inclined to feel that way he would not have punted late in the 4th quarter; they would have gone for it on 4th down. He was saving it in to use in the way he thought would be of best benefit. I don't question his call. If they hold UK or get a turnover, they're better off with the TO to call after that, not before. And when they're lining up against a play that they think they can anticipate (handoff up the middle to Dixon) it makes sense to hold off in the event that an unusual formation faces them - granted the TO's value is more to stop the clock than to strategize but there really wasn't much reason that calling the TO sooner rather than later would benefit them at that point. Just my $0.02. If he had called the TO, then UK turned it over on the very next play, he would be second guessed for wasting the TO when they could use it to keep a drive alive.

I had a brief notion that ESPN's timeout counter might be wrong.

I could be off (probably am), but I could've sworn ECU called a timeout on that last drive that wasn't counted on the top of the screen. :shrug1:

I would not put it past that Big Ten officiating crew to be unable to count time outs correctly. The crew didn't keep count well with the clock so I'd not put stock in their ability to count time outs well either.

Maybe it's in the blood...Not the best coaching move

Or maybe your old Billy Packer since he makes Joe Paterno look like a spring chicken.

He was counting on his defense stopping the Cats on 3rd down. It was a crap shoot. It wouldnt have mattered anyway as we got the first down on Dixon's run.

REALLY, I BELIEVE THAT HIS COACHING WAS WAY OVER-RATED I THINK HE WAS ONE OF THOSE GUYZZ THAT OBVIOUSLY HAD SOME TALENTED PLAYERS THAT HE MANAGED TO NOT GET IN THE WAY OF:shrug1:
PROBABLY DIDN'T HURT THAT HE HAD A NUMBER OF ASSISTANTS THAT WENT ON TO BECOME SUCCESSFUL.......SUFFICE IT TA SAY I AS WELL AS YOU CAN'T STAND THE DAMN KEEBLER ELF !!!!!

I think this is right, unless what Will said is true. Either Dixon gets the first and the game is over, or they punt, and ECU can use it to save the same amount of game time plus actually make some use out of it (ensure a play is set up correctly or something).

Personally I am glad he didn't use the last timeout. The final two and a half minutes was the longest I have ever seen. I never was so glad to see that final first down picked up.

I would have done what he did. . . If they get a stop on third down, then he would have used it. Using it before wouldn't make sense, as we could have just run a third down play, run the play clock out on fourth, take the delay of game penalty and punt. It would have cost him anywhere from 3 to 10 seconds.

As someone of you may know, I can read lips very well (deaf). He was saving it for his defense to make a stop. Once KY got the first down, he told whoever he was speaking to in the headset that it was over and took off the headset. So yes, he felt no need to delay the inevitable.

Agreed. It was obviously over after the 1st down (thanks Dixon!).

[QUOTE=Rabbit60;566586]Personally I am glad he didn't use the last timeout.

I agree. That's so annoying, in my opinion, when teams call useless timeouts or, in bb, foul needlessly when the game is obviously out of reach.
