Basketball prospect Willie Kemp committed to Memphis yesterday. Kentucky, which got a campus visit from the Bolivar, Tenn., guard last weekend, did not even finish second in that recruiting race.
Yet there's reason for "guard-ed" optimism, even an expectation of an impending commitment, as UK seeks to replenish its backcourt this recruiting year. That is because UK's interest thrills another guard, Jodie Meeks, who plans to make his official visit to Lexington this coming weekend.
"He's very excited," the player's father, Orestes Meeks, said. "Who wouldn't be? Would Mohammed be interested in the mountain?"
Meeks, a 6-foot-4 guard from Norcross, Ga., dropped Notre Dame, Illinois and Oklahoma State from consideration once UK entered the recruiting picture.
When he told his son that Kentucky had called, "His whole countenance lit up," the elder Meeks said. "He said, 'Dad, are you serious?' "
The player's father made a commitment to UK during the visit or shortly thereafter sound likely.
"I would say it's pretty close to that," the elder Meeks said.
