On Easter Sunday, there appeared to be little activity in the coaching search. That could change today, and the focus again could be on Texas A&M's Billy Gillispie. A&M athletics director Bill Byrne was a no-show this weekend at the Aggie Invitational golf tournament, further stoking speculation he may have more pressing matters. Other potential candidates who could emerge are Wisconsin's Bo Ryan and UNLV's Lon Kruger, who coached at Kansas State, Florida and Illinois before a stint as coach of the Atlanta Hawks.

Any of those guys would be a good hire, especially Gillespie.

A&M was a graveyard before he got there.

Half the reason they wanted Herb out of Raleigh was his personality, or lack thereof. Billy Gillespie makes Sendek look like Richard Pryor. If they thought Herb was boring, wait until they get a hold of Billy G's "offense."

Couldn't see Ryan going, from what they write they are a good FF shot at least next year with a potential AA at center, and they should have a couple of very good players back that went out at the semester for academics, and kind of hurting the rest of their season this year. I don't see NC state as a big step up if you already have a good program going somewhere else at a major. Why would a major program coach want to try and re-establish his program in the face of an area that is already heavily recruited by several really good and established programs and coaches.

I think they will end up with a lower tier coach before they are done, and somebody that looks at their situation as either blocked or lacking opportunity , that's the kind of guy that will jump into THAT frying pan.

Are there no NCState grads in coaching?

What's Chris Washburn doing these days?

I have a friend who loves to come up with crazy sports theories, then when one out of 10 actually happens, he loves to flaunt how he "called it." Anyway, his new one (after every NBA columnist starting writing"Garnett to the Knicks" theories that he had first predicted sometime around the Draft last year) is that Tubby is going to take the NC State job, Donovan's coming to Lexington, and Pelphrey's going to Gainesville.

I hope NC State gets hit with a blast of bad karma for running Herb Sendek out of town and gets that UNLV coach.

And I mean Jerry Tarkanian.

I wonder why NC State has not looked at one of their own, Derek Whittenberg?

Why is this N.C. State job so plum?

:question
Plum? I reckon so. Although State has recentlyfound itself on hard times, it has had some very good and highly competitive teams in years past. It's a fairly large state school in North Carolina's"second city" and has a larger fan base than some of the schools like Duke, Miamiand Wake. The school is big enough to attract good attendance when they have a team that is competitive. And believe me, Raleigh and that part of N.C. is not a bad place to live---say as compared to cold Wisconsin or West Texas. So add one of the ACC's top salaries (for the right person)and you've got a pretty nice plum!

I wouldn't necessarily call NC State's recent run as falling on "hard times."

Sendek took them to five straight NCAA Tournaments and had a winning percentage of almost 60% in arguably the toughest conference in America.

But before him they missed it 9 or 10 years in a row. I think that is more what he meant.

It is a good job, but not a job that would lure away a successful coach from a major conference team. Not many jobs are. They need to go find the next Paul Hewitt or Bruce Pearl, etc. There are a lot of good coaches at smaller schools that would love the chance of moving up to the ACC.

Sendek's biggest problem was his personality. NC State is the working-fan's team. Dook is elitest, Carolina slightly less so. NC State is a meat 'n potatos kind of school. Sendek has one of the blandest soft-spoken personalities of any coach I've noticed. Watching him coach against the demonstrative Coach K or Roy Williams was laughable. It killed State fans that Sendek didn't wear his heart on his sleeve the way Valvano did- and he never stirred the echos of Everett Case.

Sendek also ran a complicated Princeton-hybrid offense that most basketball fans couldn't get their heads around. Why so many 3's? Why so many big men taking 3's? Why so few McD's/Parade AA recruits? Why did he under-utilize players like Cedrick Simmons and Josh Powell?

NC State "snuck in" or "backed in" to the NCAA tourney under Sendek. Playing in the semis of the ACC tourney was a surprise when it happened. Playing on that Sunday a rarity. NC State helped build the ACC and the ACC tourney. NC State stood up to Carolina in the old days and started to with Dook in the 80's. Despite the problems that Valvano brought on the program, State fans forgive him because of the '83 NCAA Championship- and ultimately because of his death. He might have left the program in shambles, but NC State fans don't hold it against him. Sendek was the anti-Valvano in a lot of ways and he battled that perception till the end.

I think the whiny NC State fans ran off an excellent coach, and now they're reaping what they have sown; nobody wants the job.Is there perhaps a lesson here?

If you're insinuating that UKwill have a hard time attracting an elite coach the next time we need one- then I think you're stretching it.

Any coach that can run off by fans is not worth having anyway. If I was paid the kind of money these guys make, I think I could withstand a little criticism.

I always thought of Sendek as an arrogant dork. Tough combination to work with, and I'm amazed that he's made it this far. He is a hard worker and a great Xs and Os guy though.

Way back in the old days (early '90s) I was cruising the lounge at the Radisson in Lexington after a game. Sendek was in there dancing his feet off and having a good 'ole time. He looked more like "animal house" than "dork" that night.

Just a bit of useless and off-topic information that popped into my head.

I stood next to Sendek in the beer line at a Harry Connick Jr. outdoor concert two summers ago. Didn't notice his toes tapping or other rythmical(sp?) movement. The man has changed, that's for sure!
