A day after one guard prospect chose another school, Kentucky landed a backcourt commitment of its own.

Derrick Jasper, a 6-foot-5 guard from Paso Robles, Calif., committed to the Cats yesterday, the player's AAU coach said. The commitment came a day after another point guard, Willie Kemp of Bolivar, Tenn., committed to Memphis.

That timing was purely coincidental, said Darren Matsubara, who coached Jasper on the Fresno-based Elite Basketball Organization AAU team.

"Derrick decided Sunday night," Matsubara said. "Then we talked about it a little bit. Sleep on it. ... What's the hurry?"

Jasper, who was rated as the nation's fifth best point guard prospect and No. 35 among all high school seniors by Rivals.com, picked UK over Illinois, Memphis and Washington. As Matsubara explained, the choice of Kentucky was obvious.

Good things come to those who wait :D

"Personally, I think he's better than Kemp because he can shoot," Gibbons said of Jasper. "With him and Meeks, that's a pretty big backcourt."
Jasper averaged 21.7 points, 7.1 rebounds and 5.8 assists as a junior for Paso Robles High.

6-4 guard commits to 'Cats

By Victoria Sun
Post staff reporter

A day after the University of Kentucky lost out on one point guard, Willie Kemp, it got a commitment from another, Derrick Jasper.

Jasper, 6-4, from Paso Robles (Calif.) High School, verbally committed to UK Thursday.

"The four schools that he was looking at, they were all really good schools with great coaches," said Darren Matubara, coach of Jasper's EBO/EA Sports traveling summer team. "He just felt that there was just something special about Kentucky.

"Anytime you bring up the Kentucky Wildcats, you think of national championships. He wants to go and try to be like one of the great ones in the past."

Paso Robles High senior guard Derrick Jasper, one of the highest-profile recruits in San Luis Obispo County history, has verbally committed to play for the University of Kentucky, one of college basketball's most storied men's programs.

The 6-foot-6 Jasper, regarded as one of the nation's top high school point guards by various recruiting Web sites, will sign with the Wildcats during the early national signing period, which runs from Nov. 9-16.

Jasper had narrowed his choices to Kentucky, Illinois, Washington and Memphis in August. The first school he visited was Kentucky, traveling to Lexington on Sept. 10. He followed with trips to Illinois and Washington but did not visit Memphis.

A recent visit by Kentucky coach Tubby Smith to Paso Robles helped Jasper make his decision.

"I like their style of play," said Jasper after playing in a fall league game at Cuesta College on Thursday night. "They play defense first and they get out and fast break. And coach Smith is a winner."
