A day after one guard prospect chose another school, Kentucky landed a backcourt commitment of its own.
Derrick Jasper, a 6-foot-5 guard from Paso Robles, Calif., committed to the Cats yesterday, the player's AAU coach said. The commitment came a day after another point guard, Willie Kemp of Bolivar, Tenn., committed to Memphis.
That timing was purely coincidental, said Darren Matsubara, who coached Jasper on the Fresno-based Elite Basketball Organization AAU team.
"Derrick decided Sunday night," Matsubara said. "Then we talked about it a little bit. Sleep on it. ... What's the hurry?"
Jasper, who was rated as the nation's fifth best point guard prospect and No. 35 among all high school seniors by Rivals.com, picked UK over Illinois, Memphis and Washington. As Matsubara explained, the choice of Kentucky was obvious.
