With baseball season in full swing, I thought this week's column would be timely to explore the state of amateur baseball around the Commonwealth.

Kentucky high school baseball's usual top teams are again the highest-ranked teams this year.

The top 25 is dominated by Louisville and Lexington schools, just as it is every season.

The only poll I was able to locate in preparation for this piece was the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association Poll, which places seven schools from Lexington and Louisville in its top ten. There are seven Louisville teams and six Lexington schools in the top 25 as well.

The only teams to crack this week's top ten not from the state's largest metropolitan areas are Owensboro Catholic, Christian County and Danville.

At the top is defending state champion Lexington Christian, followed by Lexington Catholic, Pleasure Ridge Park, Louisville Eastern and Louisville Trinity.

The only school in either the 10th or 16th Regions is Boyd County, which is rated 12th this week, and remains a tradition-rich baseball power.
