Shelby's Walk-Off Home Run Gives Cats 10-9 Victory in Series Opener with South Carolina

John Shelby hit a home run in the bottom of the 11th inning as the 21st-ranked Kentucky Wildcats beat seventh-ranked South Carolina at Cliff Hagan Stadium Friday night.

The Gamecocks had come back from a 9-2 deficit, tying the game in the top of the 8th inning with seven runs, forcing the contest into extra innings.

UK (28-10) opened the scoring in the 1st inning as Collin Cowgill drilled his ninth home run of the year. Four batters later, Shelby’s single to left delivered Sean Coughlin as the Wildcats took a 2-0 lead.

After the Gamecocks cut the deficit in half, the Cats scored twice more in the 3rd as Coughlin ripped a two-run home run over the right field fence, driving in Cowgill, for a 4-1 lead.
