As I’ve stated before (http://new.kentuckysportsradio.com/?p=13361&cpage=1#comment-898632), it’s inexcusable for the women’s program to be .500 every year, finish towards the bottom of the SEC and go to NIT’s. There is a reason why every other major college basketball program with a great men’s program, also has a great women’s program. It’s called Title IX. You know, that rule that basically says, “whatever those male-pigs get, we get.” Like, say, that practice facility Craft paid for? Well, it appears that maybe UK’s (women) hoops team is on the brink of finally meeting that expectation next year.

Jeniece Johnson and Bernisha Pinkett both committed over the weekend according to ESPN Scouts, Inc. Johnson is a top 50 center and is one of the tallest girls in the country at 6-foot-6. Pinkett is a 5-7 combo guard. Both Pinkett and Johnson had committed to NC State, but with the tragic passing of Kay Yow, decided to open up the process to other schools in the spring.

This gives Matthew Mitchell, on paper, an absolute monster of a team set for next year. He already stole Ms. Basketball and Louisville area super-recruit Adia Mathies from the Cards and has transfers Rebecca Gray (North Carolina), Crystal Riley (LSU) and Keyla Snowden (Akron) all off a year of sitting out. Anna Cole, Porsha Postell and Brittany Henderson will join Mathies, Johnson and Pinkett in the class of six that enrolls. They signed in the early period.

For those counting at home, that’s nine new faces to the floor in 2009 and some pretty highly regarded additions at that. The program missed a golden chance last year with the SEC down to finally make a dent. Will next year be the year?

YES sounds like things are falling into place for the women

I would love to see them make a run like The Lady Cards did this year

I surely hope that a big year for our Lady Cats is indeed coming. :5x The recruiting has surely been strong -- and I suspect coach Kyra Elzy has been a factor in that regard (as she had been highly respected as a recruiter at Kansas, before choosing to come back to Kentucky). KUDOS to the coaching staff, and best of luck in the future. :)

This is some great news. We are really going to be a different team next season in my opinion. Big props to the coaching staff for working hard to secure these recruits!

Elzy and Insell are doing a very good job in recruiting. Insell has strong AAU ties so that helps a lot.
