Evaluation

April, 2009: Lamb is a scoring wing with excellent size. He must learn to be more aggressive and consistent because when he is he is tough to defend. Lamb runs the floor in transition and although streaky he can knock down the spot up three with time and space but his strength is his mid range game. Inside the arc he has all the dribble moves to beat his man and elevate into a smooth jumper. Lamb has the touch and concentration to make contested shots and he is also very good at creating space to score over taller or more athletic defenders. Lamb is a capable defender because he is a good athlete with long arms but must play with more urgency and energy to be affective. Lamb is talented but the key to his success is his willingness to be more consistent, a better defender and being a dependable three point shooter.

January, 2009: Lamb has very good size and length which he uses to his advantage on the perimeter. He looks to put the ball on the floor and get into the paint for scoring chances. Lamb has good, but not blazing quickness, which helps him to get to the rim. He needs to add muscle and strength to his frame which would enhance his ability to finish at the hoop when he gets in traffic, where bigger bodies tend to knock him off-balance. Lamb also needs to improve his decision-making, which will make it easier for him to score. He should learn to recognize how to use mismatches to his advantage and not work so hard for some of his scoring opportunities. Lamb will stick an open 3-point shot, but he has to become a better shooter, developing more consistency from the perimeter. He has the ability to pass the ball, but he needs to look to get the ball to his teammates more, especially since he plays on a very talented team at Oak Hill. Lamb gives decent effort on the defensive end, but he should look to use his length and size to really harass opposing players while playing defense.

December, 2008: This aggressive wing has a scorer's mentality and is in attack mode on every catch. He is strong and physical especially on the offensive end. Lamb is a streaky shooter from behind the arc but continues to keep the defense honest when he is set and ready to shoot on the catch. Lamb sprints the lane in transition or rebounds and looks to go coast to coast. Lamb is at his best when he attacks the rim where he is strong enough to finish in traffic. In the half court Lamb will score on one or two dribble pull up jumpers or on slashes through defenders. He is an underrated passer and rebounder because of his scoring but he did show the ability to drive and kick to open teammates and pulled down a few offensive rebounds. Lamb must work to be a better on ball defender and be more consistent from behind the arc to set up his drives but overall a very talented scorer with great confidence.

One of the top scoring wing players in his class. Lamb seems like he's been going through the "wars" for years. Really has a great feel for getting buckets. Could be more explosive off the bounce. Talented kid, lock high-major and a guy that programs will chase around until they land him.

AKRON, Ohio – It was a banner weekend for the New York Gauchos at the King James Shooting Stars Classic. The program brought home two championships, including a surprising upset of All-Ohio Red behind the scoring of Doron Lamb (http://kentucky.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=2&pr_key=68206).

Gauchos get their revenge

At the end of last summer the New York Gauchos saw a lot of All-Ohio Red. All-Ohio beat them in the Final Four of the Super Showcase, and then blew the Gauchos out again a few days later in the finals of AAU nationals. However in Akron, the Gauchos got their revenge to win a big time national tournament.

Knowing that they couldn't match up with the Gauchos man-to-man, All-Ohio started off in a 2-3 zone, and that allowed Doron Lamb (http://kentucky.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=2&pr_key=68206) to get going in a big way. The scoring machine from Brooklyn simply took over the first half. First it was Lamb from three, then off the bounce, then he scored in transition, and he even hit the glass and scored on second chance points. More than anything though, Lamb simply made big shots.

All-Ohio made it a point to close out to Lamb out of the zone, but it didn't matter. With his quick release, Lamb was able to get his shot off and it seemed that every time he launched, the shot was going in.

Now that Will Barton appears to be heading to Memphis for 2010.....Doron Lamb is the SG I'm wanting to see come to Kentucky to wear the blue and white next year.

I'm not just saying this because Barton is going to Memphis....but OFFENSIVELY....Lamb looks to be a much more natural "scorer". His shot DEFINITELY looks better than Barton's (compare the videos of each, and see for yourself). He has a better release, more natural arch, a softer touch, and deeper range than Barton. He doesn't look to be quite as athletic (speed, quickness, leaping ability, etc.) as Barton...but he looks athletic enough!!!

I think I'd be happy with Doron Lamb and Cameron Clark coming to Kentucky next year. These two guys look like serious scorers and pure shooters!!! :widcat:

I would think Doron Lamb as being the first 2010 commit now, this guy is just such a natural and fluid shooter its crazy, also while watching he hardly jumps off the ground when he shoots just an observation im hoping to see him in a UK uniform:5x:widcat:

With the way this kid can flat out shoot the basketball....I'm hoping he's a UK commit sometime very, VERY soon!!!

I won't put him in that Ray Allen category yet....but you know how there are some guys that when they pull up for a jumper, it doesn't matter the distance, you just feel that there's a good chance it's going in? Well this guy is one of those players. I've seen some people say he's a Meeks clone, and as far as his shooting goes I can definitely see it.

Come on down to the Bluegrass, Doron....Big Blue Nation will love ya and welcome you with open arms.... :widcat:

Yes we need Doran Lamb. With Barton commiting to Memphis, Lamb is the only top 10 SG remaining in the 2010 class! Sure we have Dodson and Miller also, but Hood is the only true SG on our roster!

If you havent heard already, today is a big day for the 2010 recruiting class as Doron Lamb, a top 10 guard in next year’s class makes his visit to Kentucky. Lamb is going to Oak Hill next year and is an explosive guard who can score in a myriad of ways. After Will Barton made the decision to go to Memphis, Lamb became target #1 for UK and many believe that if things go well on the visit, good news for UK could come quickly. There is a lot to like about Lamb…he is beyond explosive, gets to the basket at ease and has all the skill sets. The one knock on him is attitude, something that folks hope another year at Oak Hill can help.

We will keep you update on any news from the visit as Lamb makes his way around Lexington.

The Cat’s Pause broke the official time of arrival for Doron Lamb today. He will be in Lexington today, putting Lamb and Parker on campus during the same week. Along with the DeAndre visit and the Freshman camp, this is by far the busiest recruiting week of the summer thus far. If you recall my earlier post about my supposed vacation, one would expect me to be fuming at this point. Not really. As a UK fan, I’m ecstatic about the way the coaches are absolutely doing work! Also, if you recall, Lamb was my very first profile during my very first post (http://new.kentuckysportsradio.com/?p=19203) on KSR so he holds a special place in my heart. With the commitment of Will Barton to Memphis, Lamb is a high priority recruit for Calipari’s staff and a battleground for Kansas coach Bill Self and Calipari to tangle yet again.

The Dish

With the rumors surrounding Will Barton’s recruitment, many UK fans have overlooked the other shooting guard that UK is highly involved with. Don’t make that mistake because Doron Lamb is far from a backup plan and, as he has shown in the past few weeks, Coach Cal is not scared to pursue multiple commits at the same position. Add to this the fact that Cal has told Barton that he could play anywhere from the 1 to the 3 position and you see why Barton at UK doesn’t necessarily mean Lamb is going elsewhere. Lamb currently holds offers from Arizona, Kansas, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Louisville and Xavier among others. Connecticut and Syracuse are also interested in his services. Lamb has said that he wants to work on his college decision during his senior year so he may be one of those recruits that holds out for awhile. We’ll see.

Scouting Report

Lamb is a great scorer who is most effective when he is slashing to the rim or stopping short to pull up for a mid-range jumper. He possesses the highly coveted Calipari attribute of being able to shoot the floater in the lane with accuracy and is an excellent passer and ball handler as well. Lamb is a somewhat streaky outside shooter and will need to work on his consistency in this area a bit. If he gets consistent from deep, his ability to slash and score will be incredible. When he is open behind the arc or is able to get set, he shoots the long ball with deadly accuracy. Although not a super athlete, Lamb is good at creating space for himself. Things that he will need to work on include attaining more size and strength, maintaining high energy throughout the game, and bringing his defensive skills up from good to great.

A source at Kentucky reports that the Doron Lamb visit was productive and he would not be surprised if a commitment comes soon - perhaps over the weekend.

Lamb is a 6-4 point guard from Oak Hill Academy that some have said is one of John Calipari's top targets in the 2010 class. He is a five-star recruit and ranks #24 on the Rivals150 List for 2010.

He has received offers from an impressive list that includes Kentucky, Arizona, Georgia Tech, Kansas, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, St. John's and Xavier.

A top-25 point guard prospect, Doron Lamb, visited Kentucky two weeks ago. Lamb, who plays for the high school powerhouse Oak Hill Academy, liked what he saw and considers Kentucky among his college choices.

That might be considered news given UK will have two highly regarded freshman point guards next season in John Wall and Eric Bledsoe.

“I think John Wall is one-and-done,” meaning he’d play only one season for Kentucky before turning pro, Lamb said at the Nike-sponsored King City Classic on Thursday. “Eric Bledsoe, he’d be there if I go there. He and I will be a good backcourt.”

Lamb, whose first name is pronounced Dah-ron, listed his schools as Kentucky, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arizona, Pittsburgh, Marquette, Connecticut and Southern Cal.

When he visited UK, Lamb was escorted by Wall and another freshman, DeMarcus Cousins.

OK....is Jerry Tipton wanting to prove to the world that he's clueless??? Or is he doing a good job of it unintentionally???

Doron Lamb is a SHOOTING Guard!!!! What in the world does having two point guards already on the roster have to do with Lamb??? Was Jodie Meeks a Point Guard? No. Is Lamb a similar type player to Jodie? Yes. Would having "a couple of point guards already on the roster" mean anything to Jodie? No.

Good thing DeMarcus Cousins wasn't being as heavily recruited until late in the game for Kentucky this year.....otherwise Tipton would have been asking how will DeMarcus fit in at the point during articles all this past year..... :icon_rolleyes:

Because Lamb has been saying he wants to play PG in college.

Hmmm. Well, I don't know what to say to that, Rick :icon_lol:

Seriously, though...and I think you'll agree....Doron's STRENGTH....is his scoring and shooting....correct? And while I could understand his desire to have the ball in his hands on many/most occasions....a PG's primary responsibility is to set up "OTHERS". To "DISTRIBUTE" the ball. Seems like Doron would be cutting off his nose to spite his face....if his desire is to let "OTHERS" do the shooting and scoring...when that's the area he excels in.

I don't know. Maybe he has desires of being a Penny Hardaway type player....who was really a combo guard....but played a lot of SG early on and then primarily more PG later. And maybe he feels that he already has the necessary shooting and scoring skills...and he's looking to improve on his ballhandling and passing for the NBA level. But wouldn't you think that would be something he could still accomplish while playing the 2 Guard under Calipari?

WildcatRick
07-10-2009, 01:50 PM
I have no idea if that was the reason for Tipton to write what he did. I just know Lamb has expressed concern that he will have to play PG in the NBA and mentioned he would like to play PG in college.

Lamb never crossed my mind as a PG and I'm not sure how much point he expects to play. No doubt Calipari's system would be the logical one to play under with his aspirations. He could very easily learn to play point without really playing point.

Kyrie Irving is a combo guard and capable of playing either in college. Having a great PG that can shoot or a great 2G that can pass only makes you that much more dangerous and versatile.

Regardless, you were right Tiptons assessment made little sense and he contradicted himself in it. No matter what position Lamb wants to play Wall wont be here to affect it, IMO.

Agree 100%! This is why....in all honesty....I kinda lean towards wanting Irving more so than Knight. I know that sounds crazy....but with Bledsoe on board....if Lamb commits....the Cats backcourt in 2010 is set (Bledsoe at PG, Lamb at SG). Irving would be a GREAT backup to BOTH guys....thus seeing a lot of floor time as a result.

I'm hoping for Lamb, Payne, Leslie and Irving to commit. Anybody else after that would be gravy

Doron Lamb’s New York Gauchos rolled past the Showtime Ballers 17’s team, which includes Shane Larkin, Cincinnati Reds’ star Barry Larkin’s son, on their roster. Shane was late in arriving, as he also had a game with the Ballers’ 16U team that he had to attend before. Larkin’s arrival ignited his squad but it was a bit too late. He did get the chance to show his lightning speed and ability to finish at the rim though. Lamb got out in transition and scored most of his points on lay-ins. He also knocked down a couple jumpers and a borderline 3 pointer that was scored as a 2. Earlier in the week, Lamb was being followed by Bill Self and Jeff Capel. Today, he has both Rod Strickland and John Robic on the sidelines. Lamb told me after the game that he doesn’t have his trips to Oklahoma and Kansas scheduled but that they are still on the agenda. After the AAU season is when he’ll try to get a firm date set.

ORLANDO, Fla. - Things really got into high gear on Saturday in Disney World. The AAU Super Showcase crowned a champion at the 16 and under level, and at the 17 and under level there were several surprises and a monster performance by Doron Lamb (http://georgiatech.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=2&pr_key=68206). Now only eight teams remain in contention for the championship.

Lamb is one of the top scorers in his class.

A hostile takeover by Lamb

Sometimes as a coach it is best to simply sit down and get out of the way, and to their credit that is exactly what the New York Gauchos coaches did on Saturday night. They did that because Doron Lamb (http://georgiatech.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=2&pr_key=68206) was absolutely on fire in the second half of a comeback win over Louisiana Select.

The Gauchos started off the game slow, and didn't have their usual energy on defense or the crispness on offense. Louisiana Select wing Matt Derenbecker (http://georgiatech.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=2&pr_key=85949) was getting to the rim and also making shots, and that along with some help from his supporting cast, and the Gauchos were down by 10 points in the second quarter.

Still the Gauchos were trailing at half time, and after scoring only five points in the first half, Lamb just decided to take over the game and completely shut things down. It all started for Lamb on an and one layup where he was granted continuation that NBA refs would have been questionable with.

Questionable or not, the bucket went in, and after that Lamb was in the zone. The Gauchos really didn't set ball screens for him or anything, the ball was just put in his hands, and he was told to go to work. First Lamb showed the ability to get to the rim, then he just pulled up for three, and then he decided the mid-range game was how he was going to score.

All the time, Louisiana Select simply had no response, heck that had nothing even resembling an idea of how to stop Lamb, and to be fair when he is going like that it might not be possible to even slow him down.

As ridiculous as Lamb was in the third quarter, he carried it over to the fourth quarter, and by the time his scoring run ended, Louisiana Select found themselves trailing by double figures. Lamb did finally miss a shot late in the fourth quarter, but the damage was done, and he finished with a cool 32 points in helping the Gauchos advance to the quarterfinals of the Super Showcase.

Doron has long been at the point in his recruitment where he speaks highly of Kentucky, but also says that he wants to visit Oklahoma and Kansas. His father, Calvin Lamb, said that those dates still aren’t set yet and the family is still in the mode of “waiting to see what happens.” Calvin noted that Doron still has all five of his official visits and may spend two of those on seeing Oklahoma and Kansas, while maybe even taking a second visit to Kentucky. Calvin believes that there is no reason why his son would hold out on his commitment into the spring period and thinks that he will probably sign a letter of intent this fall.

There has been plenty of speculation that the reason for putting off the visit was due to the fact that Doron was secretly leaning towards Kentucky. While his father doesn’t believe that he has any such leanings, he would say that “Kentucky is one of his favorites,” and that his son “really likes Kentucky.” The main job for any parent is to make sure that they guide their child into the best decision and that is a point that isn’t lost on Calvin who said, “I just want to put my son in the best position possible.”

Another hot topic amongst basketball writers was Doron’s comments on seeing himself playing the point guard position at the next level. His father agreed that his son could play the point guard position and added, “he’s labeled a shooting guard because of his scoring ability but I would say he’s probably the best combo guard in the country.” I think it would be hard for anyone to argue that point. Doron has played superbly all summer. Also important to note is Calipari’s recent comments about possible running three point guards at the same time, which would seem to mesh very well with the Doron’s wishes.

After a great visit to Kentucky this weekend, Doron Lamb faces a “tough choice” ahead, according to his father, Calvin Lamb.

Lamb, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard out of Queens, N.Y., who plays at Oak Hill (Va.) Academy and is ranked No. 3 nationally at his position by Rivals, has now taken officials to Oklahoma, Kansas and Kentucky.

my fingers are crossed. it would be huge to add a shooter to Lamb's caliber

There used to be a little bit of mystery surrounding when Doron Lamb would decide but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. During his visit this weekend to UConn, which lasts until Monday, he told the New Haven Register that he plans on deciding in the Fall. However, he doesn’t plan on signing until the Spring which really leaves the timeline pretty wide open since he won’t be shooting for the same November 18th deadline that those signing will have to make.

Since Lamb also gave a definite list of his final five schools (UK, Oklahoma, Kansas, UConn, Arizona) you can expect Lamb to decide some time after his last visit to Arizona, the only school of the five that he has yet to make an official visit to. That visit remains unscheduled at this point.

Here's hoping that he decides for UK. I seriously doubt that anything would happen between now and the Spring that would change his mind.... :widcat:

Anybody know where the Cats stand with Lamb? Are we leading? Or at least know what the "insiders" are saying?

I think UK is up there and has a decent chance. However, I have felt for a long time that Lamb would end up elsewhere (I think KU).

I agree with the first part (up there, decent chance). But as for the second part, it sounded like he was UK's for the taking...but perhaps Cal and staff went into "delay mode" a bit....perhaps thinking maybe a Lamb commitment would hurt with Knight and/or Selby. I hope that's not the case....but for whatever reason, it sounded like he was UK bound, and then all of a sudden, maybe not. I wonder if the Poole commitment had anything to do with that. I certainly hope not, since Poole isn't really a SG but more of a SF.

:5x that Lamb announces for UK. AND SOON!

Any chance Lamb visits UK late this weekend with his team playing in Marshall County Hoopfest ? Are there any other players UK are looking at playing in the hoopfest?

Doron Lamb recently finished up his visit to Arizona and his father, Calvin Lamb gave a few bits of info to KU website theShiver.com (http://theshiver.com/2010/01/no-timetable-for-lamb/). According to Lamb’s father, Doron could be deciding tomorrow or months from now. If you want to try to make odds of when the actual date will be, you’d probably point to after Spring break. That’s when Doron will be able to travel home from Oak Hill to NYC, talk over his visits and options with his parents and make a decision on where he wants to go. Lamb has taken all five of his official visits (Kentucky, UConn, Kansas, Arizona and Oklahoma) but is also getting interest from Cincinnati, UCLA and West Virginia and his father didn’t rule out the possibility of unofficial visits to those schools. Those that may know where Lamb would go and make efforts to guess where are all across the board with the schools he has officially visited but Kentucky consistently is included as a possible favorite. Kansas gets the same treatment as well.

AWESOME!!!

Thanks for that info. I'll have to set the DVR to record that one, since it will be going to be up against some NFL playoff action, which I will not miss ;)

And actually we recently moved to Boone, NC. I have to admit I had no idea Oak Hill was so close. I am going to try and make every home game I can and will post after!

MAN!!! I forgot to record this one, so I missed Lamb.

I wonder if there is somewhere online to watch this one?

So, did anyone get to watch? And if so, how'd he look?

Lamb looked good. He didnt score an awful lot or totally take over by any means but he made tons of heady plays. He seemed to have a very high basketball IQ for a senior in HS. prob playing on the Guachos AAU squad has helped him a lot. After watching the game on ESPNU, I want him even more to be at UK next year.

Good ball handling skills, excellent passer, shoot well from the line and seemed to be very calm and collected at all times

From what I've seen from highlights, that is the exact impression I get from Lamb. A guy who plays within himself, makes smart plays and handles himself well on the court. I really like his composure and demeanor on the court, and absolutely LOVE his offensive game and especially his jump shot :icon_lol:

Just to add to the above review. He definitely didnt force things, was actually more pass than shoot oriented it seemed. But the part that most impressed me was his defense. He spent most of the game guarding Jared Sullinger, the Ohio St commit who is the top ranked PF and top ranked overall by some sources. Even tho he gave up 5-6 inches and probably 100 pounds Lamb held him to 3 points (all from the line).

Very good point. I totally forgot to talk about his D. Oak Hill ran a triangle and 2 on Sullinger. Lamb played in front and a big would cover behind. So its not like he played Sullinger heads up but he did front him the entire game and would box sullinger out if they over-rotated or got out of position. I was very impressed with Lamb's D, sometimes I think it would be hard (might be hard) for a coach to get one of his 'stars' to buy to a defensive scheme like this triangle and 2. But Lamb was going all out on the defensive end. Lamb was def doing the little things that won't get to a stat sheet but helped his team push for a victory.

Thanks CatfaninIN for bringing his D up. I had neglected that part of his game

Excellent report, guys  ....both of you, UKDonkbet and CatfaninIN.

Quite honestly...I can't blame Cal and the staff for going hard after Knight, and almost equally as hard after Selby. But I like Lamb, and wouldn't have a problem with him as a backcourt running mate for Bledsoe next year if we miss out of Knight and Selby. In a perfect world, we'd add Knight OR Selby AND Lamb. A three guard rotation of Knight or Selby AND Bledsoe AND Lamb would be awfully, awfully strong and give us great depth in the backcourt. :widcat:

Here's hoping that Cal and co. can make it happen

After watching the horrid shooting display last night against USC...and seeing the shooting struggling overall recently as more and more teams are now playing primarily zone against the Cats...I realize now more than ever why I've been wanting Lamb to become a Wildcat next year! :widcat:
