The Dish
Ray McCallum was originally recruited by Gillispie at UK but Coach Calipari has been in contact with McCallum’s father and said that he would love to have him play at UK as well. He doesn’t have a visit planned for Kentucky yet but expressed that he would like to get a chance to see UK’s campus eventually. McCallum could be a battleground for Coach Bill Self of Kansas and Calipari to meet again, as Kansas has been in on McCallum early and thought to be one of the leaders during the early stages of his recruitment. Also don’t count out his father, Ray McCallum Sr., who is the head coach at Detroit now. McCallum said that there are no favorites at this point and he doesn’t have a timetable for when he’ll ultimately decide. His list is a who’s who of college basketball and he seems to be wide open right now about who he’ll look at. I’d expect Cal to start getting closer to McCallum once the contact period opens up again. Like I said before, this kid’s recruitment is heating up faster than a fat man in the Derby infield at noon.

Scouting Report
At the AMC, McCallum showed good footwork on defense to keep himself between his man and the basket. He is a good outside shooter but the knock on McCallum is that the outside shot can become a bit streaky for him. His outside shot was on in a game I watched which allowed him to get to the rim easily against hugged up defenders (dropped 22 on a very good SYF squad). He can pull up for the midrange jumper as well. He has a great feel for the game when the ball’s in his hands but what was most impressive was the way he moved without the ball. He is very sneaky and can seek out and find holes in the opponent’s defense and exploit them. In transition he’ll look to make the good pass but has the ability to take bumps and score in traffic as well. He was Gatorade’s Player of the Year from Michigan and if you look at his Scout.com ranking (only behind Brandon Knight and Kyrie Irving at pg) you get an idea of how good this kid could be. His wide shoulders suggest that he could pack on some thick muscle in the future which would make him a force to be reckoned with.
