I'm roadtripping to your city for the Reds v. Pirates game, Tuesday night, 5/16, and I'm looking for advice on tickets, cheap nearby hotels, parking, etc. This is a total hit-and-run, see-a-new-stadium overnighter. I'll head there early Tuesday morning, and leave early Wednesday morning, so other than a few beers before and after the game, I won't be doing any in-depth exploration of downtown.
Tickets: I'll be by myself, so I know I can get a single seat at the ticket window if need be. However, is there any particular area around PNC Park where the scalpers congregate? Scalpers are usually keen to ditch any odd single tickets for a good price, just to avoid getting NOTHING for it, so this is Plan A. In Cincy, the scalpers must remain off of stadium property, so they roam the surrounding 2-block perimeter...is the situation in Pittsburgh comparable?
Hotels: I've checked all the rates downtown, and they're a bit too steep for my plans. I've found a Microtel about 12 miles from downtown offering a rate of $53/night. It's on Chauvin Road, SW of downtown. How's the neighborhood...should I avoid it, or is it okay?
Finally, Parking: If I'm driving in from the 'burbs, should I just park down near the stadium? What can I expect to pay? For Reds games, we park across the river on the Newport side and take a ferry across to the game for $4.00, roundtrip. Anything similar for the Pirates games? Can I park on the southside of the river and either ferry across, or walk across one of the many bridges? That would save me the hassle of trying to find my way out of an unfamiliar downtown in the middle of post-game traffic. Also, are there any cool pubs/bars on that southside riverbank?
I've mentioned this before probably - my brother and I have a longtime competition regarding the visitation of "foreign" (outside of Cincy) MLB stadiums.... with bonus points for seeing my beloved Reds in those stadiums. I've checked the Reds' schedule, and I hope to knock-off Pittsburgh, Detroit, Chicago, and St. Louis, all in the next month. This will be the first shot-across-the-bow in oruacat2's "Blitzkreig 2006" whirlwind tour. lol Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, and Go Reds!
