Despite an Internet report saying Tobias Harris had narrowed his list to three schools, Torrel Harris says his son still has a list of about a dozen schools.

“Tobias’ list is open ONLY to his top schools,” Torrel wrote in an email. “My son likes the following schools: Tenn, UCONN, West Virginia, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Rutgers, St.John’s, Virginia, Kentucky, Louisville and West Virginia.”

The 6-foot-8 Harris was the sixth-leading scorer (13.3 ppg) at the NBA Top 100 Camp in Charlottesville, Va., and plans to cut his list later this summer.

“At the end of the summer we will cut the list to five schools and by the end of September we will have a college decision,” Torrel said.

“When we pick our five, everybody’s going to know.”

I spoke with a highly respected Big East assistant coach today and he couldn’t stop raving about Tobias Harris.

Harris, the 6-foot-8 rising senior forward at Dix Hills (N.Y.) Half Hollow Hills West, dominated at the LeBron James Skills Academy and was the sixth-leading scorer (13.3 ppg) at the NBA Top 100 Camp in Charlottesville, Va. Now he’s turning heads at the Peach Jam.

Harris has a slew of big-time coaches falling all over themselves to get him.

“He’s the best offensive forward in the country,” the coach said. “He can face up, he can post up, he can drive. He can do everything. If they took a picture of his body from last year and compared it to this year, he can make millions of dollars doing body sculpting or weight loss ads. He looks thin, quick and bouncy.

“He’s really good. He’s the story of the summer.”

Harris told Jeff Goodman of FoxSports.com that he has shed 15 pounds of baby fat with a routine in which he woke up at 5 a.m. every day, ran two miles, worked out after school and also trained at 9 p.m. on his speed and agility.

Scouting Report

Tobias Harris recently shed about 15 pounds of baby fat and added a lot of muscle to his frame with a very stringent workout regimen, which he described to Jeff Goodman as waking up at 5 am everyday, running two miles, working out after school and, at 9 pm, working on his speed and agility. His hard work has paid dividends by quickening his game and giving him the versatility that has made him a top prospect this summer. On the low block, at times, he can be a little undersized, but he makes up for it with quick post moves and the ability to turn around and face up. When he faces up against other fours, he can knock down the mid-range jumper or use his lighter frame to blow by them. In transition, his new sleek frame helps him to glide along with the guards and his soft hands receive passes well. The most consistent compliment that I hear Tobias receive is his ability to create around the rim and finish with either hand efficiently. This skill will help him find ways to score in the low post against better defenders, although his versatility gives him plenty of other options. Any way you paint Tobias, the truth remains that he is tearing up the AAU circuit in a variety of ways. Eric Bossi, of Scout.com, recently called him one of the true standouts during the Peach Jam and added that Tobias may be on the path to serious consideration for the McDonald’s All-American game.

Recruiting Report

Tobias did have his list cut down to ten but since his fine AAU season began, he has let a few more schools join the party. According to his father, his list now looks like this: Kentucky, Memphis, Tennessee, UConn, Syracuse, Notre Dame, Maryland, Georgia Tech, Rutgers, St. John’s, Virginia, West Virginia, and Louisville. Tobias has also mentioned Florida. He has visited Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Notre Dame this summer and also said that he plans to see Memphis and Kentucky later in the summer. UK is new to the mix and hasn’t offered him a scholarship yet, while most of the other schools on his list have. After his fine play on the AAU circuit and a visit to Kentucky in the future, it wouldn’t be surprising to see UK offer at some point. Although there has been a few different leaders according to internet rumors, it seems like Tobias is truly still weighing all his options since many new schools have jumped into the mix. There is the added factor of his little brother, 2011’s Tyler Harris, who has accompanied his older brother on visits and has a scholarship offer from UConn and is receiving interest from Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Syracuse and West Virginia. It remains to be seen whether they will end up at the same school or whether a separation is in the cards. His father told Jeff Goodman that he plans to cut the list down at the end of the summer and then make a final decision by the end of September.

Tobias Harris has also been getting a lot of attention from the UK coaches. Every game of Harris’ Albany City Rocks’ team, that I have seen, has had a UK coach as a spectator. After watching his younger brother, Tyler Harris, play for the Westerchester Hawks, I ran into their father Torrel and spoke with him for awhile about his sons’ recruitment. Torrel told me that the interest from Kentucky had just really started to turn into a “recruitment” about “10 days ago,” when the coaches got into more serious contact with him. Torrel has been to Kentucky during his college playing days. After his coach was let go from Duquesne, Torrel transferred to Murray State to continue his playing career. We spoke a bit about the UK fan base and their passion for basketball, as well as the tradition that UK has as a basketball school. As far as his son’s interest in Kentucky, he said that with a school like Kentucky, when they come calling, you pretty much have to give them a serious look. Right now, his objective is to get his kids a good college education while also getting them the coaching they need to make them the best possible basketball players that they can be. On that note, Torrel did recognize Calipari’s proficiency in making college players into pros. With a sister that plays college basketball, a father that played, a younger brother that is rising fast, and an even younger brother who his father said may have the most skills of the bunch, Tobias definitely has basketball in his blood.

Just three weeks ago, UK was just another schools trying to get involved in the recruitment of the summer’s hottest commodity, 6-7 forward Tobias Harris. His father, Torrel Harris, felt that with a school of Kentucky’s history and with a coach of John Calipari’s stature, you had to take a closer look. Today, the Harris family got that closer look and it seems like the Cats have made up a lot of ground with the New York prospect.

“They definitely improved their status with me. I got see [the program] more and see what it was all about and that’s why we came, ” Tobias explained.

In order to lure in any top prospect, a school must really show all of their major selling points and Tobias and his family seemed to get the royal treatment from the coaching staff while in Lexington. “I talked to Coach Calipari, seen all the facilities, took a tour of the campus, talked to some of the players and got to meet the academic advisors and all the people in the program basically.”

One familiar face Tobias noticed while on his visit was that of UK’s former top recruit and another former hot name from the AAU circuit. “I knew John Wall because we were on the same team at Reebok U. two years ago,” he said. Demarcus Cousins also greeted the Harris family in Lexington. The facilities and the fans are always big selling points for any recruit that UK is trying to attract and while describing what really stuck out to him on the visit, one could tell that this was point was not lost on Tobias, who said, “The facilities are all top of the line. The campus is nice and they have good fan support. They’ve got a great program.”

From here, Tobias and his family plan on sitting down and trimming his list of schools, most likely toward the end of August. When asked whether UK would make that cut, Tobias said, “[I] don’t want to put any school ahead of others right now but I got to see a lot more about UK today.”

Tobias’ next stop will be at the Nike Global Challenge, which will take place August 7th-9th at Liberty High School in Hillsboro, Oregon.

UK will be taking a trip up to NY for an in-home visit with Tobias Harris on September 9th, according to Tobias’ father Torrel. UK was late jumping in on this one but they seem to be giving their full effort to make up ground with the kid by spending an early in-home sit down with the Harris family. This kid is versatile and has mis-match written all over him.

I had a discussion with Torrel Harris about UK’s scheduled in-home visit with his son, Tobias, on September 9th. That discussion led me to believe that UK was in a pretty good spot with Tobias. Last night, I spoke with another source that is very close to the Tobias recruitment and this source assured me that UK would be making all the cuts for Tobias and will eventually get an official visit from Tobias. The source, who is extremely solid, also told me that UK was in the top couple of schools, if not at the very top at the moment. What this means is that the UK visit impressed the Harris family so much that, barring some crazy happening, like Coach Cal letting a silent but deadly one slip in the Harris family living room during the in-home visit, UK will be in it until the end. Just a little good news that I thought I would pass along to you guys to get the weekend started off right.

Tobias Harris’ father told Zag’s Blog that Tobias might not even take official visits and a decision could come sometime after or during in-home visits. He said that they have already seen most of the schools anyways. This could be positive or negative for Kentucky, depending on if they get picked, I guess. It is nice that Kentucky was one of the more recent visits and Torrel seems to have just changed his mind about needing officials. That, to me, is a good sign. Also, the Cats have the first in-home with Tobias, showing that they have a very strong interest and may have also got the feeling that the in-homes could seal the deal (since you obviously don’t want to be last now, or anywhere but first, now).

Tobias Harris and his family left Lexington earlier today and, at some point thereafter, Torrel Harris sent me a text message which read:“Fans were UNBELIEVABLE!” That message got me really excited to hear what kind of experience he had, since he was able to get an up-close and personal look as his son visited the University of Kentucky, the nation’s most glorified basketball program, on probably one of the most historic dates in the University’s long history. Later in the day I received a call from Torrel and got the chance to pick his brain about just what that unique experience entailed.

Torrel told me a story about Tobias’ earlier trip to Maryland’s Midnight Madness two years ago, where Gary Williams came driving out in a White Lamborghini. That trip left a lasting impression on the younger Harris, but after Friday night’s experience, Torrel asked his son, “Out of all your visits to Midnight Madnesses, which one is your favorite?” Tobias quickly answered that Kentucky’s Big Blue Madness had now taken over the top spot.

Here’s some of the other highlights of our discussion:

DR: What all did you guys do through your first day there on Friday?

Torrel Harris: We got there on Friday. Then after the Madness, we didn’t really do nothing. We went back to the hotel and Tobias went and played ping-pong and hung out with the guys.

DR: What did Tobias say about hanging out with the guys? Did he have a good time?

Torrel Harris: Yeah, the guys are great. He got along real good with the guys. They played ping-pong and just hung out at the [Joe B Hall Wildcat] Lodge. Him, Kyrie, Michael Gilchrist, Achraf went out there. It was cool. He had a real good time out there.

DR: Who hosted Tobias while he was there?

Torrel Harris: I think Patrick Patterson was his host.

DR: After Friday Night, what did you guys do the rest of the weekend?

Torrel Harris: Saturday we watched practice at 9 in the morning. From 9 o’ clock to 11. After that, we all went and met with the academic advisor, Michael Stone. Then we went back to the practice and watched the second workout and practice. We just hung out there and watched. Practice was great and Cal is great. He’s going to get this team top notch. And then after that we went back to the hotel and then went to get dinner in the evening time. Patrick Patterson and the staff were at dinner. Then Sunday we just went to breakfast with the staff and went to practice and then left to go catch our flight. Oh yeah, after dinner on Saturday Tobias went back and hung out with the guys again. He just went and hung out with them in the Lodge. Yeah, so it was a good trip. It was really pretty good. Lot of excitement down there at Kentucky. Big time…Big time!!

DR: As far as seeing the team play and getting to see the team practice, what kind of feel did you guys get for how Tobias would fit in with this system here at Kentucky?

Torrel Harris: He would fit in good with the dribble drive offense. He can hit the jump shot, he can shoot from outside, he can handle. Yeah that dribble drive offense is good. It’s a good offense. Coach Cal, you know, he’s just a good coach and that’s the bottom line, he’s just a great coach. You gotta hit that outside jump shot in that dribble drive offense, and you gotta penetrate. If he can do those things, then that offense is a perfect fit for you, if you can do those things.

DR: Anything else that just really stood out to guys during the visit?

Torrel Harris: The fans stood out. I mean, they were just UN-BE-LIEVE-ABLE. And then just the teaching techniques of the staff, of Coach Cal and of just his whole staff. For me, that stood out. That stood out for Tobias too. You can tell the fans are unbelievable. I videotaped the whole thing and you can tell man, they LOVE their UK basketball. 24,000 fans up there for Madness, man that is unbelievable. So, I mean, it was great man, it was great.

DR: What did Tobias have to say about the fans?

Torrel Harris: Unbelievable.

DR: So what about your wife? I know that she wasn’t able to make it last time so what did she think about the visit?

Torrel Harris: She’s impressed with the academics and everything. She’s impressed with Coach Calipari. So she’s impressed. The bottom line is that I could love it, she could love it but the ultimate is Tobias and his decision that he makes. I mean you can’t go wrong when you get a coach like Coach Calipari. You just can’t go wrong, you know? Great guy, great family man, Christian man. You just can’t go wrong. Cal’s the man! He’s a great guy.

DR: At this point in the visits, has there been anybody that Tobias has said to you that he liked more than the others or are they still all getting equal treatment?

Torrel Harris: All the schools that we picked for the final 7, he loved all those schools so he’s just taking his time and analyzing this trip and four more trips after that and then after the last one, which is Georgia Tech, then he’s going to try to make a decision if he feels comfortable that he can make a decision. Or if he feels like he wants to wait and watch the college season first and spend more time on it, he might because we really want to make sure. But I think he’s going to make a decision before the November 18th signing period. …All indications are that he wants to make a decision before his high school basketball season starts, which is the 18th.

I was told by my buddy at UK that the staff feels pretty good about Harris. His parents both seem to be enamored with Cal. My buddy said it's between UK and Syracuse right now. He put it at 60/40 for Syracuse.

The staff was hoping for a quick decision from Harris as they thought he would go UK's way if a decision was made within a week or two. Now that it will be over a month, I'm not sure what will happen.

I just learned that Tobias's father played at MURRAY STATE!!! No wonder he has UK and Louisville each listed (ties to the state).

Like someone mentioned in another thread....it sounds like Tobias's dad is in the same mold of Patrick Patterson's dad. And Tobias sounds like a pretty classy guy himself. It never hurts to have guys with good parents (the apple doesn't fall far from the tree) and class as a part of any team.....

Tobias Harris still has needs to finish up his visits and then make his decision. That should come about a week from now and his scheduled announcement for ESPNU is set for Nov. 19th. With more visits set to come, it becomes even harder to predict where Harris might end up. As I’ve said all along, this kid has a ton of great situations at his various schools, many of which would make complete sense if he were to pick them. His father and Tobias both like the situation at UK a lot, so this is race certainly worth your attention.

Here's my conjecture:

Tobias Harris is scheduled to announce Thursday on ESPNU. Terrence Jones has yet to announce where he'll play, though some view him as a UK lean. They are both PF, although they play slightly different styles. If Tobias Harris announces to UK, Terrence Jones waits until spring to decide. If Harris commits elsewhere (Syracuse?) then Jones commits to UK this fall. I have no inside information or exceptional ability at reading recruits, but this is just a theory that comes to mind.

Bunch of reports coming out that Harris is likely NOT headed to UK.

If we don't land Harris, I am going to start worrying about the 2010 class.

We will have a TON of holes to fill next year and are going to be heavily relying on Leslie, Jones, and Knight all to chose UK.

At this point...I would have been happy if we had added Tobias Harris and Doron Lamb to Stacey Poole and maybe found some late bloomer or two that had crept their way into the top 75 or top 100 overall to round out the class.

I mean, even if we lose out on Harris....we still have a shot at Knight, Selby, Jones, Leslie and Lamb....but the chances of us landing just two of those five may not be so great....forget about adding three, four or all five!

I guess it's just the uncertainty of it all....and the fact that nearly all of the top recruits are going elsewhere. Had the first signing for 2010 been Harrison Barnes rather than Stacey Poole, I think we'd all be breathing a little easier. But who knows...maybe having some three and four year guys like Poole will actually be better a few years from now, because we see how a group of freshman can tend to drive us crazy at times :icon_lol:

I don't see anyway Harris ends up at UK.

Cal is going to have a MAJOR recruiting project on his hands in the spring!

This is from Aaron's UK blog, I think it's some pretty good info.

A note on the impending commitment of UK recruit Tobias Harris-

Five Star UK recruit Tobias Harris of Half Hollow Hills H.S. West (NY) is expected to sign his letter of intent later today, which is the last day of the early signing period. He will announce his decision live on ESPNU at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Tobias is officially considering the following seven schools: Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Syracuse, Tennessee, and West Virginia.

College basketball reporter Adam Zagoria says conventional wisdom means Harris will likely choose between Louisville, Syracuse, Tennessee, and West Virginia.

Dan Lyons of Bleacherreport.com says Syracuse and Tennessee seem to lead the pack for the services of Tobias.

GoVolsxtra.com says Harris is believed to have narrowed his choices to Syracuse and Tennessee.

Jeff Goodman from FoxSports.com tweeted that most coaching staffs in the hunt for Harris feel he will end up choosing Tennessee.

I cannot find any credible articles or reports that say Tobias will pick UK or that Kentucky is currently in the lead for his services. If Harris goes elsewhere, that will leave UK with only one early commitment- Stacey Poole. This would also make Tobias the third recruit who attended Big Blue Madness but went elsewhere, the other two being Kyrie Irving and Achraf Yacoubou.

Late on Tuesday evening, news broke that Harris traveled to Knoxville after concluding his visit to Georgia Tech to watch Tennessee dismantle UNC-Asheville. Harris told AllKYHoops.com “he just felt like watching them play and it was only two hours from Georgia Tech”.

Despite rumors to the contrary, he further explained to AllKYHoops.com that he was in Knoxville, but hadn’t committed to Tennessee. He claimed there was still no favorite and all seven schools were still being considered. Finally, he said the things about Kentucky that most stood out to him were the fans and atmosphere.

The reports about his last minute visit to Knoxville are a little reminiscent of the Kyrie Irving recruitment saga. Tobias may have committed to Tennessee tonight, but just doesn’t want to publicly announce it until Thursday on ESPNU.

There is one glimmer of hope that Harris to Tennessee might not be a done deal. According to the New York Daily News, the Volunteers are expected to receive the commitment of four star forward Jayvaughn Pinkston from Bishop Loughlin (NY) tomorrow. Adam Zagoria quoted a Division 1 assistant basketball coach as saying "there was no way Harris and Pinkston are going to the same school". Zagoria later updated the story to include quotes from Harris’s dad that indicated the two of them could co-exist on the same squad. Torrell Harris said “they’re two different players” and he predicted they would “both play a lot” at Tennessee.

Even if Tobias doesn’t end up committing to Tennessee because of Pinkston, this isn’t necessarily good news for UK. Dan Lyons of Bleacherreport.com concluded his article by saying Pinkston's recent commitment to Bruce Pearl and the Volunteers seems to indicate that Harris may be a Syracuse commit in the near future.

While Harris’s final destination is still unclear, it’s probably safe to assume that it won’t be Maryland or West Virginia. The Terrapins recently gained a commitment from 2010 forward prospect Ashton Pankey and West Virginia just got a commitment from 2010 center David Nyarsuk.

I think it's fair to say most UK fans and recruiting analysts would be surprised if Tobias Harris commits to and announces for Kentucky. If conventional wisdom holds true, Calipari and the UK staff will be under tremendous pressure to deliver in the late signing period (April 14-May 19).

IMO, Harris is headed to Tennessee now.

http://www.zagsblog.com/2009/11/18/pinkston-to-hold-off-on-decision/

Everyone thought Pinkston would be heading to UT. Now, he's waiting to commit and Harris was there yesterday. Timing just seems about perfect for UT to land Harris.

If so, I will be really dissapointed.

This is one kid Id really like to see in Blue. I cant see why in the hell anyone with that kinda talent would waste it in Knoxville....This would be a huge blow to us if we lose out on this kid to Bruce Pearl.

I am going to say this is 100% rumor as of now.

But, I was just told by my buddy at UKAA that Harris' people have told them he will NOT be attending UK.

This is a major dissapointment, IMO if true. Coupled with the report that Jones is likely staying close to home, the 2010 class is not looking great right now.

Still no definitive word on Tobias Harris, even though if he was going to sign an LOI he had to do it last night.

There's a rumor on the national Rivals board that he will verbal to Tennessee today but he will not sign until the spring. Hello Josh Selby. If that's true, then that seems to be an obvious sign that they're still not sure and this thing isn't over.

Word from a few other posters over there was that as of last night, the Harrises were still weighing options and had no idea. Take it FWIW.

Everything that I have read, from Scout/Rival boards to Syracuse and UT boards, is that he already did sign after the surprise attendance to the UT game Tuesday night. I posted a link last night in a new thread, but someone felt the need to delete it without at least moving it to this thread.

I hope your right, but I think he's wearing the burnt orange.

If they signed after the visit, then they were pulling a lot of folks' legs because Mr. Harris was asked many times yesterday and he continued to say they didn't know.

He told Zagsblog that at 11:56 last night the decision was made. Have no idea if an LOI was signed, but the timing of it makes one think that midnight was a deadline and so I assume a letter was signed and delivered. Tobias listed ten or fifteen things that went into his decision, and one of them was that he wanted to "take the program to the next level." That's got UT written all over it. :icon_neutral:

I'm still being told by my buddy that he is NOT headed to UK.

Definitely dissapointed in this one. I really liked Harris.

Cal needs to strongly turn up the heat on Selby and Jones big time!

If it's UT, that just baffles me. Why in the world would a top notch recruit go to UT over UK, UL, UConn, and Syracuse? :shrug1: I think many of these kids worry that our one-and-dones may not be so "one". If that's the case, they must have no confidence in their abilities. And are probably better off elsewhere. If you aren't confident in yourself, UK will eat you alive.

Here's a tweet from Evan Daniels

Lots of Tobias Harris tweets tonight. Tennessee seems like the pick. Syracuse would surprise me, any other school would shock me.

Nope he's heading to Tennessee.

My buddy at UKAA said they were told yesterday he would not be choosing UK and found out today that he is heading to wear the disgusting vomit orange UT uniform.

Makes no sense to me at all.

Looks like Tobias is a "taker" as Coach Cal would say. Showed up to his announcement in a black stretch limo.

Cal don't run the style of ball he wants to play in, KY is guard first offense.

I think Tobias just took a step backwards with his goal of playing in the NBA, but regardless wish him well. Oh Tobias, at least twice a year you will witness what it is like to be Kentucky.

Fwiw, out of the three bigs we are in on, I would take Harris last. Yes, I realize that he's the highest ranked of the three, but he's also the least athletic.

He's going to be a great player for UT, but I think we'll be just fine.

I would have wanted him the most...since we likely will lose Patterson and Cousins after this year. He's more of a physical presence inside...even though he isn't the "high flyer" that Leslie and Jones are. He's also perhaps the most "fundamental".

That said....if we land Jones I'll be ecstatic. His overall game and skill set probably exceeds that of Harris. Or right about now, I'd be extremely happy is we land Leslie! Landing both would be a dream!

I'll say one thing....Harris has now guaranteed himself being booed like he's never been booed before the times during his college career that he plays in Rupp ;)
