Has anyone ever had, or known someone, who has owned one of these dogs? I've been thinking of getting a dog, and this is what I'm thinking I want to get. A neighbor has one, and it is very friendly and has a very beautiful coat.

I've read that they make really good pets and are fairly intelligent (as far as dogs go).

Anyone know anything about them?

My wife had a Weimaraner when she was growing up. She still talks about how much she loved that dog.

William Wegman is a photographer who is renowned for his Weimaraner photos:

I had one. Sort of. Mom was a registered Weimaraner and Dad was a Lab. I knew the mother dog real well because two good looking twin girls my age lived there and I visited often. They had a brother in my class so that made it easier to find an excuse to drop by. :)

I found both the Mom and my dog to be great dogs. A little higher energy than some would like but if you have some yard for him/her to run around in that shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't call them "highly" intelligent, but they are plenty smart. Good solid dogs that really want to please. Mine would stare at me all the time just waiting for me to ask him to do something. He would stare at me for hours at a time. :)

Known several people who have owned them. Good dogs on the whole. High strung and they require a lot of attention. This is a dog thatneeds a lot of exercise. If the don't get it they tend to find other ways to get rid of there energy. Chewing on shoes, furniture, your wallet. Don't get me wrong, they are good dogs, just know what you are getting into. These are hunting dog......

Big strong dogs.

Can be tough on little kids just because of size and enthusiasm.

Get away and can lead to hours of suspensful pursuit to retrieve.

Tend to get stolen when they do escape.

Can be trained and some are very mallable and intelligent, but if I characterized them as a breed, I would call them somewhat hard headed.

As mentioned, they can be hell on their surroundings as puppies.

One thing to remember about all dogs, "big dog, big poop".

Another old saw, big dog in the yard, small dog in the house, meaning that big dogs tend to be more relaxed than little yippers when inside.

You really have to look at your lifestyle and how this dog might fit it. If you have a large acreage, large yard, room for it to run, great. If you are single and have a lot of time to devote and share with your dog, great. They can be great ride alongs and great companions in Nebraska, but maybe a real pain in the butt in the lexington housing projects. They were bred to be bird hunters but they would not be very good bird hunters in KY because of their size speed and range, they would be much better fits for wide open low growth farmlands of the west.
